If your TV’s screen center sits well above your eyes when you’re seated, it may be mounted higher than ideal for your usual viewing position. Start by measuring your seated eye height, then place the screen center near that level. The often-cited 42–46 inches from the floor is only a typical guide—not a universal rule.
How high should you mount a TV?
For seated viewing, use your eye height in your usual viewing seat and posture as the starting point for the screen’s center. Measure from the floor to your eyes while seated; do not assume a standard sofa or chair puts every viewer at the same height. ROSS’s 2022 mount guide describes 42–46 inches (107–117 cm) as typical, while noting that the right height varies by person. A 2012 English-language guideline from the Japan Ergonomics Society reports preferred heights for 32-, 42- and 65-inch TVs. It describes the most common real-world case as a horizontal viewing position at 0°, with the screen center at eye level. This is a reported preference, not a prescription for every room. How to calculate the screen’s bottom edge
Once you have a target center height, subtract half the TV’s actual screen height to find where its bottom edge should sit. The diagonal measurement alone is not enough for an exact installation; check the display’s dimensions. For a 16:9 screen, TVCalc offers screen height ≈ diagonal × 0.49 as an approximation. TVCalc

- Sit in the seat and posture you use most often, then measure from the floor to your eyes.
- Use that measurement as the target height for the screen center.
- Check the TV’s actual screen height and divide it by two.
- Subtract half the screen height from the target center height to estimate the bottom edge’s height above the floor.
- Confirm the screen dimensions and the planned position before marking or drilling; the diagonal-based formula is only an approximation.
For example, TVCalc’s worked example for a 65-inch TV and a 42-inch eye-level target puts the screen center at 42 inches and the bottom edge at 26.1 inches from the floor. The calculation uses the site’s 16:9 screen-height approximation. TVCalc
What if a fireplace or furniture forces a higher position?
First compare the proposed position with your actual seated sightline. A tilting mount may help direct the screen toward the viewing seat when a room constraint requires a higher placement, but tilt alone does not establish that any high installation will be comfortable. Check the TV and mount manufacturers’ instructions, compatibility, load rating, VESA fit, and the wall structure before choosing or installing a mount. ROSS mount guide

The available guidance does not establish a universal maximum viewing angle or fireplace safety clearance. Do not assume a particular angle or clearance applies to every TV, mount, fireplace, or wall; follow the relevant manufacturers’ instructions and applicable installation requirements.

The cited guidance supports using seated eye height as a placement starting point, but it does not establish a clinical threshold at which a TV becomes too high, or prove that one mounting height prevents injury. Use your own viewing posture and sightline to assess the setup rather than treating a particular floor measurement as a medical rule.
