Choose the intended use and dimensions first; plans differ in construction, materials, workload, and included detail. There is no single reliable current price for building or commissioning one, so compare itemized costs for the same design and scope.
Choose the kind of apothecary cabinet you need
Before choosing a plan, decide what the cabinet will store and whether the fronts are functional drawers or a style applied to doors and drawers. A shallow console, a kitchen base cabinet, and a tall tool cabinet are different projects; their dimensions, storage needs, joinery, and labor are not interchangeable.
| Project example | What the cited plan describes | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Kreg apothecary cabinet | An advanced project inspired by metal cabinets used in doctors’ and dentists’ offices, built with plywood and dimensional boards and including glass panels. | Its instructions include materials and cutting details, pocket-hole assembly, and iron-on edge treatment for exposed plywood. Check the plan’s list for glass, hardware, and all required sheet goods. |
| Woodsmith Pharmacy Cabinet | A cabinet made with poplar and MDF, with glass shelves and a drawer section. | Woodpeckers describes a 14-page downloadable plan with instructions, illustrations, hardware sources, and a materials list. Supplemental shop drawings add part and assembly detail. Check current plan prices with the seller. |
| Jimmy DiResta apothecary tool cabinet | A customizable, intermediate project listed at 32 1/4 inches wide, 72 inches tall, and 20 1/2 inches deep. | Its scale and many parts call for a suitable shop and tools, including a table saw, drill/driver, router with flush-trim bit or flush-trim saw, orbital sander, and brad nailer. |
| Ana White apothecary-style kitchen cabinet | A kitchen-cabinet approach using a plywood carcass, supports, face frame, and boards for door and drawer fronts. | Its face-gap and drawer-width recommendations are specific to that plan, not universal engineering limits. Account for countertop and cabinet requirements in the actual kitchen design. |
What does a cabinet plan include?
Plans vary in how much support they provide. Before buying one, check whether it includes the overall dimensions, materials list, cut list, assembly steps or diagrams, and details for drawer boxes, slides or runners, and fronts. If the project is complex or you are less experienced, see whether the seller offers supplemental shop drawings.
Woodsmith’s plan is one example of a standard step-by-step plan with an optional detailed drawing set. Kreg’s plan is an example with materials and cutting details for a plywood-and-board cabinet with glass. These examples do not establish that all plans include the same level of detail.

How to estimate the cost
Do not assume one generic price for an apothecary cabinet. Designs differ in size, drawer count, joinery, materials, glass, hardware, finish, and whether labor, delivery, or installation is included. Research did not establish a current general cabinetmaker rate or current material basket.
Published project estimates are useful only as examples tied to their specific designs. Ana White labels one apothecary console plan as estimated at $150–$200; that estimate is not a verified current cost for every cabinet. A separate Ana White kitchen-cabinet project says its base cabinets cost about $400 to make, but it describes a different project and should not be treated as a per-cabinet rate or a custom quote.

- Alignment fences and tabs make sure your jig is accurately aligned on both framed and frameless cabinets
- Large clamping area allows for tight and secure clamping to cabinet
- CABINET MUST BE AT LEAST 15" DEEP TO SUPPORT SLIDE INSTALLATION
- Reverse the DrawerJig and face outwards to support and align drawer while attaching slides
- Built-in level helps indicate if your cabinets have been installed accurate and true
For a fair DIY-versus-hire comparison, price the same specification locally. List materials and labor separately, account for waste and finishing, and request itemized cabinetmaker quotes. Popular Woodworking’s historical estimating example illustrates tracking materials, a waste allowance, and shop hours, but its figures are not current prices for this project.
Use this budgeting checklist
- Chosen plan, dimensions, and drawer layout
- Wood species and grades, sheet goods, and expected waste
- Drawer-box material and construction
- Number and type of pulls, labels, slides, hinges, or other hardware
- Glass or other panels, if required
- Adhesives, edge treatment, finish, and application supplies
- Tools to buy or rent, and estimated shop hours
- Delivery, fitting, installation, taxes, and contingency
Build strategy
- Define the use and footprint. Decide what the cabinet stores and set acceptable width, height, depth, and drawer sizes before selecting a plan.
- Choose a plan that fits your experience. Review dimensions, materials, cut list, assembly details, and drawer instructions. Consider supplemental drawings if the plan leaves details unclear.
- Make a full materials and hardware list. Include sheet thickness, edge treatment, solid wood, drawer parts, slides, pulls, hinges, glass, finish, and likely offcuts. Price current local stock rather than relying on old project estimates.
- Assess tools and workload. Many small drawers require repeatable sizing and careful fitting. Compare the plan’s tool list and skill level with what you can use safely and accurately.
- Test the fit strategy. Build a prototype drawer or test the intended face gaps and fitting approach before committing to a full batch. This is especially useful for a face frame or multiple close-fitting openings.
- Compare like with like. If considering a cabinetmaker, provide the same plan or drawings and specifications to each shop. Ask what materials, hardware, finish, delivery, installation, and taxes are included, and what changes would alter the price.
When should you hire a cabinetmaker?
Get a professional quote if the cabinet must fit an alcove or match existing furniture, has many consistent drawers, needs demanding glazing or finishing, uses materials or joinery outside your experience, or has a schedule that leaves little room for a learning build. These are practical decision points, not a formal threshold established by the plans.

Compare quotes by scope, not just by board cost. A shop’s proposal may include design refinement, sourcing, shop labor, fitting, finishing, delivery, and installation. Ask for inclusions, exclusions, lead time, and change conditions in writing. If you build it yourself, include your time, waste, tools, and finishing supplies in the comparison.
