Mole Tunnels in the Lawn: How to Remove Them and Stop the Damage From Coming Back

Confirm that raised ridges are mole runways and test for activity before choosing a response. If trapping is warranted, use an active runway and follow trap directions; tamp and irrigate disturbed turf, and overseed bare areas to repair the lawn.

Mole tunnels push up ridges beneath the lawn, but not every mole needs to be removed: activity may be seasonal and can stop on its own. If the damage warrants intervention, confirm the animal, test for an active runway, and trap there according to the trap’s directions; then tamp or roll disturbed turf, irrigate to help it recover, and overseed bare patches.

Repairing a lawn and keeping moles away are separate tasks. Trapping is the most reliable control method in the reviewed university extension guidance, but it cannot guarantee that another mole will not move in. Grub treatment alone will not eliminate moles, and scents and sounds are not reliably effective.

First, Make Sure You Actually Have Moles

Moles feed on invertebrates, including insects and earthworms. Their shallow feeding tunnels push up raised ridges, and deeper burrows may create soil mounds. Vole runways are cut into the grass surface, and clipped grass may be visible. Voles can use existing mole tunnels, so a tunnel by itself does not prove which animal caused damage to plants or roots.

Do not assume that damaged plants or roots mean moles are eating them. Check the signs before choosing a remedy. If the animal is unclear, contact a local extension office or qualified pest professional rather than treating for the wrong species.

Decide Whether to Intervene

Mole activity can be seasonal and may stop on its own. Moles also aerate soil and consume some lawn pests. If the damage is tolerable, you can monitor activity and repair the turf rather than immediately setting traps. Keep in mind that removing a mole does not prevent another from moving into the area.

Find an Active Runway

Do not set a trap on a mound or on a tunnel chosen at random. Choose a relatively straight, regularly used runway. To test a candidate tunnel, compress a section and check whether the soil rises again the next day. Renewed raised soil indicates activity.

  1. Find a raised runway that appears relatively straight and regularly used.
  2. Compress a short section of the tunnel.
  3. Check it the next day. If the soil has been raised again, treat it as active.
  4. Use an active runway for trap placement, following the directions for the exact trap.

Trap an Active Mole Safely

University extension guidance supports trapping as the most reliable method of mole control. Harpoon and scissor-jaw traps are options described in the guidance; Minnesota Extension describes the harpoon style as readily available and easy to set. The right choice and setup depend on the trap and its instructions, so do not assume a particular technique works for every model.

  1. Confirm that the runway is active before setting a trap.
  2. Set the trap on the runway according to its manufacturer’s directions.
  3. Keep children and pets away from the set mechanism and mark the location.
  4. Check the trap at least every 24 hours, as Minnesota Extension advises, and follow any more specific manufacturer instructions and local rules.

Take care when setting or handling a trap; its mechanism can injure fingers or paws. If you cannot keep others away from the trap or are unsure about local requirements, ask a qualified local professional for help.

Compare Your Options

Option Best suited to What it can do Limits
Monitor and repair Tolerable or possibly seasonal activity Lets you see whether activity continues while restoring disturbed turf Does not remove a mole if activity persists
Trap an active runway Ongoing damage where you have confirmed an active runway Directly targets the mole using the runway Requires correct placement, regular checks, and attention to safety and local rules; another mole may move in
Buried mesh barrier A small planting area that needs protection Can protect a limited area when installed as a barrier Installation takes effort and is impractical across large open areas
Repellent scents or sounds No reliable use established in the reviewed guidance May be marketed as a deterrent Not reliably effective, according to Maryland Extension

What Common Remedies Can and Cannot Do

Grub Treatment Is Not a Mole-Control Plan

Moles eat grubs as well as earthworms and other soil insects. Treating grubs alone therefore will not eliminate moles. Address a confirmed grub problem on its own merits, but do not rely on grub control as a substitute for trapping an active runway when mole damage continues.

Repellent Scents and Sounds Are Not Reliable

Maryland Extension says repellent scents and sounds are not reliably effective. Do not count on them to remove an established mole or prevent all future activity.

Use Barriers Only for Small Areas

A buried barrier can protect a small planting, but it is impractical across a large open lawn. UConn Extension describes using hardware cloth, aluminum sheathing, or wire mesh for small plantings. Its guidance specifies burying the barrier 18–24 inches deep with a further 6-inch lip bent outward. Consider the installation effort and site conditions before choosing this approach.

Repair the Lawn After Tunneling

Once the soil is no longer being disturbed, press raised tunnels back down with a lawn roller or tamp them to restore soil contact with the roots. Irrigate to support turf recovery. Overseed areas where grass has died or soil is open. These steps repair damage; they do not guarantee that moles will stay away.

  1. Roll or tamp down raised tunnels to restore contact between the soil and turf roots.
  2. Irrigate the disturbed area to support recovery.
  3. Overseed dead or bare patches.
  4. Check for renewed activity separately by testing a runway if new ridges appear.

For displaced plants, UConn Extension advises tamping the tunnel area and irrigating to encourage rooting. If disturbance continues, address the active runway rather than repeatedly repairing the surface alone.

When to Get Help

Consider help from a local licensed pest or wildlife-control professional if activity persists, the runway is difficult to identify, or you cannot safely place and monitor a trap. Verify licensing and local requirements before hiring or trapping. Rules and available control methods vary by location.

FAQ

How can I tell whether a mole runway is active?

Compress a section of the raised tunnel and inspect it the next day. If the soil has been raised again, the runway is active.

Should I remove every mole from my yard?

Not necessarily. Mole activity may be seasonal and stop on its own, and moles aerate soil and consume some lawn pests. If damage is tolerable, monitoring and repairing turf may be enough.

Where should I set a mole trap?

Set it on a confirmed active, relatively straight runway, not on a mound or a tunnel chosen at random. Follow the exact trap instructions and monitor it at least every 24 hours, as Minnesota Extension advises.

Does killing grubs get rid of moles?

No. Moles also eat earthworms and other soil insects, so grub treatment alone will not eliminate them.

Will repellent sounds or scents keep moles away?

They are not reliably effective, according to Maryland Extension. Do not rely on them as a dependable control method.

Can a barrier protect my whole lawn?

Buried mesh or similar barriers may protect a small planting area, but UConn Extension cautions that barriers are impractical across large open areas.
