How to Get Rid of Gnats Indoors: 14 Fixes That Actually Target the Source

Most indoor “gnat” problems are not one pest. They are usually fruit flies, fungus gnats, drain flies, or phorid flies, and each one needs a different fix. This guide walks you through identification, source removal, traps, drain cleaning, plant treatment, costs, and when to call a pest pro or plumb

If you want to get rid of gnats in your home, start by identifying what kind of small fly you actually have. Most homeowners use the word “gnats” for several different pests: fruit flies, fungus gnats, drain flies, and phorid flies. They look similar when they are circling a sink or window, but they breed in very different places. That is why vinegar traps help some homes and do almost nothing in others.

The fastest reliable approach is a two-front plan: remove the breeding source and trap the adults at the same time for 1 to 3 weeks. Adult traps alone rarely solve an active infestation because eggs and larvae keep developing in fruit film, wet potting soil, drain biofilm, or hidden moist debris.

On our job sites, small-fly problems usually trace back to one of four conditions: food residue, wet plant soil, dirty drains, or a plumbing/moisture defect. The last one matters. Persistent flies at slab-level drains, first-floor bathrooms, laundry rooms, or around a sewer odor can point to a dry trap, uncapped line, cracked waste pipe, or organic contamination under flooring.

Start With a 60-Second Gnat Identification Check

Before you buy sprays or pour anything down a drain, spend one minute watching where the flies are strongest. The source is usually within 10 to 20 feet of the heaviest activity.

Cleanuper 58 Pack Yellow Sticky Gnat Traps for Plants - Fungus Gnat Killer, Fruit Fly Traps for Indoors, Gnat Sticky Traps for Plants, Family Friendly Design, Sunflower + Butterfly Shapes
  • [Catches Gnats, Fruit Flies, Whiteflies And More] Yellow sticky traps with top-grade adhesive grab fungus gnats, aphids, fruit flies, thrips, and whiteflies on contact from both faces. Place each card at soil level near drainage holes for fastest results. Works for indoor plants and outdoor gardens.
  • [Decorative Shapes That Stay In Your Pots Year-Round] Yellow sunflower and butterfly designs look intentional in any plant display rather than calling out a pest problem. The yellow color attracts insects and decorates at the same time. Leave one trap per pot as a permanent monitoring layer; if a new infestation starts, you will spot insects on the surface before your plants show damage. Two options offer flexibility across pot sizes and styles.
  • [Peels Clean Without Tearing] Start at the bottom and slowly peel one protective film at a time to cleanly reveal the adhesive face. The thicker rigid plastic stake and trap keep the card flat and straight throughout setup so you do not wrestle a floppy surface. No glue on hands, tearing, accidental folding before insertion, or hassle. Three steps: peel, hold, push into soil.
  • [Family Friendly Design & Odorless] The family friendly physical adhesive trap is odorless and leaves no residue on surfaces near your plants. Keep out of direct reach to avoid hair or skin contact with the glue surface.
  • [Works Indoors, Outdoors And In Hanging Baskets] UV-resistant construction holds up under direct sunlight without degrading the adhesive. The pointed plastic stake inserts directly into soil; use the included wire to hang traps near hanging baskets, window herb gardens, or bare-root seedling trays where no soil is available. Two deployment modes, one pack.
What You See Likely Pest Common Breeding Source Best First Fix When to Escalate
Tiny tan flies around fruit, trash, compost, wine, beer, or recycling Fruit flies Fermenting produce, sticky cans, food film, spills Remove produce, clean bins, set vinegar traps If activity continues after 7 to 10 days of cleaning
Small dark flies hovering around houseplants Fungus gnats Wet potting mix, algae, decaying leaves in soil Dry top 1 to 2 inches of soil and use sticky cards If plants decline or larvae persist after 2 to 3 weeks
Fuzzy, moth-like flies resting near sinks, tubs, floor drains, or disposals Drain flies Gelatinous biofilm inside drains and disposals Brush drain walls, clean disposal, use enzyme treatment If multiple drains stay active after 10 to 21 days
Fast, hump-backed flies running on surfaces near drains, slab floors, or damp areas Phorid flies Moist decaying matter, failed drains, sewer leaks, contaminated soil Inspect plumbing and moisture sources Call a pro quickly if sewer odor or slab activity is present

Do not assume every small fly in the kitchen is a fruit fly. A houseplant on the windowsill, a dirty garbage disposal, or a dry floor drain can make the problem look like it is coming from the sink even when the breeding site is somewhere else.

14 Ways to Get Rid of Gnats in Your Home

1. Identify the Fly Before Treating

This is the step that saves money. Fruit flies breed in fermenting food and food film. Fungus gnats breed in wet potting media. Drain flies breed in organic slime inside drains. Phorid flies breed in moist decaying organic matter and can be tied to sewer or drain defects.

Use a flashlight and inspect the heaviest activity areas at night and early morning. Check fruit bowls, trash cans, recycling bins, plant saucers, garbage disposals, sink overflows, floor drains, mop sinks, laundry standpipes, and the cabinet floor under sinks. If you treat the wrong source, you can spend $50 on products and still have flies a week later.

2. Remove Overripe Produce and Fermenting Food

For fruit flies, remove the food source first. One female fruit fly can lay about 500 eggs, and under favorable indoor conditions the egg-to-adult cycle can finish in roughly a week. That is why a bowl of bananas can turn into a room-wide problem quickly.

Move ripe fruit to the refrigerator for 10 to 14 days while you break the breeding cycle. Throw out damaged fruit, onions, potatoes, and any produce with soft spots. Wipe the shelf or counter under the bowl with hot soapy water, then dry it. Check pantry corners and under lower cabinets for a single forgotten potato or onion. We have seen one spoiled item keep a kitchen active after every visible surface looked clean.

3. Clean Trash, Compost, and Recycling Bins

Fruit flies and other small flies do not need a pile of garbage. A sticky film inside a bin, a few drops of beer in a can, or a compost pail with fruit scraps can support breeding.

Empty indoor trash daily until the problem is gone. Wash the bin with dish soap and hot water, including the lid, hinge, rim, and bottom seam. Rinse bottles and cans before recycling. If you use indoor compost, empty it every 1 to 2 days and wash the container. A basic DIY cleanup usually costs $5 to $25 for trash bags, dish soap, vinegar, and covered jars.

4. Set Apple-Cider-Vinegar Traps for Adult Fruit Flies

Vinegar traps catch adult fruit flies while you remove the breeding source. They are not a complete cure, but they are useful monitoring tools.

Use a small jar with 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar, 2 to 3 drops of dish soap, and a paper funnel or plastic wrap with several 1/8-inch holes. Place traps near the sink, trash, fruit bowl, and recycling area. Replace the liquid every 2 to 3 days. If traps keep catching flies after a week of cleaning, keep looking for missed food film, spills, or a non-fruit-fly source.

5. Clean the Garbage Disposal Thoroughly

A garbage disposal can look clean from above while the underside of the splash guard and grinding chamber are coated with food film. That film is enough for fruit flies and drain flies.

With the power off at the switch, lift and scrub the splash guard flaps with a stiff brush, dish soap, and hot water. Clean the underside of the rubber baffle, the sink flange, and the visible wall of the disposal. Flush with hot tap water while running the disposal. Avoid mixing chemicals in the disposal, especially bleach with any drain cleaner residue.

6. Scrub Drain Biofilm Instead of Only Pouring Liquids

Drain flies lay eggs in gelatinous organic film inside drains, disposals, and other wet areas. The core fix is mechanical cleaning. A quick pour of bleach may miss the film on pipe walls, overflow passages, stopper assemblies, and the underside of fittings.

Fruit Fly Traps Indoor Fungus Gnat Trap 48PCS for Plants Yellow Outdoor
  • Ultra Sticky & Fast Acting: Bright yellow color attracts fruit flies and fungus gnats instantly, while extra-strong adhesive locks insects in place without dripping or drying out. Two Shapes: Sunflower, Butterfly
  • Safe for Home & Plants: Chemical-free, non-toxic, and odorless—safe to use around kids, pets, houseplants, herbs, and vegetables indoors or outdoors.
  • Easy to Use & Long Lasting: Just peel and stick near plants or problem areas. Each trap works for weeks, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
  • Double-Sided Design for Maximum Catch: Catches flying pests from both sides, covering more area than single-sided traps and helping monitor infestation levels effectively.
  • Eco-Friendly Pest Control Solution: No pesticides, no sprays, no harmful fumes. A clean and responsible way to control flying insects in your home and garden.

Remove the stopper where possible and scrub the accessible drain wall with a drain brush. For bathroom sinks, clean the pop-up stopper, pivot rod area, and overflow opening. For tubs, remove hair and soap scum from the strainer and trap access if available. Consumer drain brushes are often under $10, and a drain brush plus enzyme or foaming drain treatment commonly totals $10 to $35.

7. Use Enzyme or Foaming Drain Treatment After Brushing

After brushing, use a drain product labeled for organic buildup or small-fly drain maintenance. Enzyme and foaming products work best when they contact the pipe wall and stay there long enough to break down residue. Follow the product label for dose, contact time, and repeat schedule.

Do not use outdoor pesticides, unlabeled insecticides, or random chemical mixes in drains. Pesticide labels are legal use directions, and the label controls where and how the product can be used. More product is not better. It can be unsafe, damage finishes, or create fumes.

8. Tape-Test Suspect Drains Overnight

If you are not sure which drain is active, use a simple tape test. At night, dry the drain rim and cover the opening with clear tape or plastic wrap. Seal the edges, or place tape sticky-side down over part of the opening without fully blocking air movement. Check it in the morning.

Flies stuck to the tape or trapped under the plastic point to that drain as a source. Test kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks, tubs, showers, laundry drains, basement floor drains, and seldom-used fixtures. Run the test for 2 to 3 nights if activity is inconsistent.

9. Let Houseplant Soil Dry at the Top

Fungus gnats are commonly tied to overwatered houseplants. Their larvae feed on fungi and organic matter in wet potting mix and can damage roots in some cases, especially on seedlings or stressed plants.

Let the top 1 to 2 inches of soil dry before watering again, as long as that is safe for the plant species. Empty saucers within 30 minutes after watering. Remove dead leaves from the soil surface. Improve light and air circulation where practical. If the pot has no drainage hole, repotting is usually the better fix.

10. Repot Plants With Better-Draining Mix

If a plant stays wet for more than 5 to 7 days after watering, the potting mix may be too dense or the container may not drain. Fungus gnats thrive in that environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repot into a container with drainage holes and use a mix appropriate for the plant. For many common houseplants, adding perlite or another drainage component helps the root zone dry more evenly. Remove decaying roots and old wet organic debris during repotting. Avoid topping pots with decorative moss during an active fungus-gnat problem because it can hold moisture at the surface.

11. Use Yellow Sticky Cards for Fungus Gnat Adults

Yellow sticky cards are effective for monitoring and reducing adult fungus gnats. They do not kill larvae in the soil, so use them with watering changes and soil treatment.

Place cards just above the soil surface, one card for every small to medium pot or every 1 to 2 larger plants during heavy activity. Replace when the surface is covered or dusty. Most packs cost about $6 to $15, depending on size and quantity. Expect to use them for 2 to 3 weeks while the larval cycle declines.

12. Apply Bti Soil Drench for Fungus Gnat Larvae

Bti, Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, targets larvae of mosquitoes, black flies, and fungus gnats. It is commonly sold to homeowners as mosquito bits, dunks, or similar products. Bti targets larvae, not the adult flies you see in the room.

Use it as a soil drench according to the product label. Many homeowners spend about $10 to $25 for Bti products, with repeat applications needed because new larvae can continue hatching. EPA guidance describes Bti as having minimal toxicity to honey bees and not being toxic to humans in the same way conventional pesticides are, but that does not mean you should improvise. Use the labeled rate, labeled location, and labeled interval.

13. Fix Leaks, Condensation, and Standing Water

Small flies need moisture. Under-sink leaks, sweating pipes, wet grout lines, refrigerator drip pans, HVAC condensate problems, and laundry room seepage can all support activity.

Look for staining, swollen cabinet bottoms, soft baseboards, musty odor, and recurring dampness. Under sinks, use a dry paper towel around trap joints, supply valves, dishwasher connections, and disposal fittings to find slow leaks. In basements and laundry rooms, check floor drains, sump areas, washer pans, and condensate lines. Dry the area completely after repairs. A fan and dehumidifier can help, but they are not substitutes for fixing the water source.

14. Call a Pest Pro or Plumber When the Pattern Points Beyond DIY

Most fruit-fly and fungus-gnat problems are DIY-friendly. Drain flies are DIY-friendly when the source drain is accessible and the issue is ordinary biofilm. Phorid flies are different. Persistent phorid-fly activity can indicate a hidden organic source, failed sewer line, uncapped pipe, or contaminated soil under a slab.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Call a pest pro or plumber if flies persist after 10 to 21 days of source removal, appear from multiple drains, come with sewer odor, are strongest at first-floor or slab-level drains, or seem to return immediately after drain cleaning. Professional gnat or small-fly extermination commonly runs $150 to $300, with broader small-fly source-finding sometimes in the $150 to $500 range. General exterminator benchmarks in 2026 are roughly $131 to $341 nationally, with many customers near $209. Plumbing camera inspection, drain cleaning, trap repair, or sewer-line work can raise the total substantially.

Cost to Get Rid of Gnats in 2026

The price depends less on the number of flies and more on the number of breeding sites. One fruit bowl is cheap. A bad floor drain, failed trap seal, or cracked drain under a slab is not.

Fix Typical 2026 Cost Best For Notes
DIY fruit-fly cleanup and vinegar traps $5 to $25 Produce, trash, compost, recycling Usually works in 7 to 14 days if the food source is removed
Yellow sticky traps $6 to $15 per pack Fungus gnat adults Use with soil drying or Bti; traps alone do not kill larvae
Bti products $10 to $25 Fungus gnat larvae Repeat based on label directions
Drain brush plus enzyme or foaming treatment $10 to $35 Drain flies and dirty disposals Brush first, then treat; repeat may be needed
Pest control visit $150 to $300 average; sometimes $150 to $500 Persistent or unidentified small flies Cost rises with callbacks, source-finding, and multiple rooms
Plumber or drain specialist Varies widely Dry traps, clogged drains, sewer odor, slab concerns Camera inspection or pipe repair can cost far more than pest service

The main cost drivers are source location, accessibility, number of drains or plants, severity, duration, local labor rates, whether pesticides are used, and whether follow-up visits are included.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

DIY Is Reasonable When the Source Is Obvious

Handle it yourself when the flies are clearly tied to fruit, a trash bin, one overwatered plant, or one accessible drain. Give the plan enough time. A good DIY treatment normally takes 7 to 21 days because you are interrupting an active life cycle, not just killing the adults in the room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For DIY work, keep it narrow and measurable. Clean the suspected source, set traps, write down where you placed them, and check counts every 2 to 3 days. If one trap keeps filling while others stay empty, that tells you where to keep looking.

Hire Pest Control When Identification or Source-Finding Is Unclear

A pest professional is useful when the flies are spread through several rooms, the species is unclear, or you have already cleaned the obvious sources. Good small-fly work is inspection-heavy. The technician should identify the fly, find larval sources, recommend sanitation or moisture correction, and use labeled products only where appropriate.

Bring in a Plumber When the Clues Point to the Drainage System

Call a plumber if you have sewer odor, repeated activity at floor drains, flies coming from multiple fixtures, gurgling drains, dry trap concerns, or activity concentrated on a first floor over a slab. Pest control can reduce adults, but it cannot repair a cracked waste line, restore a trap seal, or cap an abandoned pipe.

Safety Notes for Drains, Pesticides, and Plumbing

Do not mix drain chemicals. Bleach, acidic cleaners, ammonia products, and some drain openers can react dangerously. If you have already used one product, wait and flush according to the label before using anything else.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not pour boiling water into fixtures as a routine pest fix. It can soften wax seals, stress PVC or older piping, damage porcelain under some conditions, and still miss the biofilm clinging to pipe walls. Hot tap water and mechanical brushing are safer for most homeowner drain cleaning.

Use pesticides only according to the label. The label tells you where the product can be applied, how much to use, whether it is allowed indoors, and whether it can be used on potting soil or in drains. “Natural” does not automatically mean safe for every use.

For plumbing, fixture traps matter. A properly maintained trap seal blocks sewer gas and pests from entering the living space. Seldom-used floor drains, guest baths, basement fixtures, and laundry drains can dry out. Add water periodically to maintain the seal, and ask a plumber about trap primers where a drain needs automatic seal maintenance. Abandoned lines should be capped, not left open behind cabinets or under flooring.

How Builders Prevent Gnat Problems During Remodels and New Work

Small-fly prevention is partly pest control and partly construction quality. In kitchens, baths, basements, and laundry rooms, the details that keep water and organic residue out of hidden spaces also reduce pest risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On our projects, we pay close attention to drain slope, accessible cleanouts, properly trapped fixtures, sealed penetrations, and cabinet protection below sinks. Wet rooms need durable transitions at tile, grout, tub decks, shower curbs, and backsplashes. A small gap at a sink base, a slow supply leak, or an unsealed laundry connection can hold enough moisture to create odor and pest activity.

During remodels, any abandoned drain or vent line should be identified and capped correctly. Floor drains should remain accessible. Cabinets should not bury cleanouts that future plumbers need. In basements and slab-on-grade homes, repeated small-fly activity deserves more respect because the source can be below the finished surface.

Why Gnats Keep Coming Back

Gnats come back because the breeding site is still active. The trap on the counter may catch 50 adults, but if larvae are developing in wet soil, drain slime, a dirty disposal, or a hidden leak, the next generation is already on the way.

The common misses are predictable: treating all small flies as fruit flies, using sticky traps without removing larvae, pouring bleach down a drain without brushing biofilm, overwatering plants after treatment, ignoring recycling residue, and applying pesticides without fixing moisture. Correct those, and most indoor gnat problems become manageable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you have cleaned food sources, dried plants, brushed drains, treated appropriately, and still see flies after 3 weeks, stop repeating the same surface-level fix. At that point, the next dollar is better spent on inspection, not another bottle of drain liquid.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest way to get rid of gnats in the house?

Identify the type of fly, remove the breeding source, and trap adults at the same time. For fruit flies, remove produce and clean trash or recycling. For fungus gnats, dry the top 1 to 2 inches of soil and use sticky traps. For drain flies, scrub drain biofilm before using an enzyme treatment.

How do I tell whether I have fruit flies, fungus gnats, drain flies, or phorid flies?

Fruit flies gather around fermenting food, trash, wine, beer, and recycling. Fungus gnats hover around houseplants. Drain flies look fuzzy or moth-like and rest near drains. Phorid flies are fast, hump-backed flies often tied to moist decay, drains, sewer problems, or slab-level moisture.

Why do gnats keep coming back after vinegar traps?

Vinegar traps catch adult fruit flies, but they do not remove eggs, larvae, wet soil, drain biofilm, or hidden food residue. If flies keep returning, the breeding source is still present or the fly has been misidentified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does bleach kill drain flies?

Bleach may kill some organisms it contacts, but it often fails as a drain-fly fix because eggs and larvae live in biofilm stuck to pipe walls, overflows, stoppers, and disposal parts. Mechanical brushing and biofilm removal are more reliable.

Is Bti safe to use for fungus gnats in houseplants?

Bti is commonly used against fungus gnat larvae and is considered much lower-risk than many conventional pesticides when used correctly. Still, the product label controls the dose, application method, and repeat interval, so follow it closely.

When should I call pest control or a plumber for gnats?

Call a pro if flies persist after 10 to 21 days of source removal, appear from multiple drains, come with sewer odor, or are strongest around first-floor, basement, laundry, or slab-level drains. Those clues can indicate a drain, trap, sewer, or hidden moisture problem.
