If dirt remains, wash with mild soapy water and a soft-bristle brush, then rinse thoroughly. For mildew, stubborn stains, or pressure washing, check the care instructions for your exact siding product first: cleaning formulas and pressure-washer guidance differ by manufacturer.
Choose a cleaning method for the soil
Start with the least aggressive approach that suits the problem. Keep cleaning solutions from drying on the siding, rinse them off thoroughly, and test unfamiliar cleaners in an inconspicuous spot.
| What you see | Try first | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Routine dust or loose dirt | Rain or a garden-hose rinse | Sheltered spots under eaves and porches get less natural rinsing. |
| General dirt or textured grooves | Mild soapy water and a soft-bristle brush | Avoid stiff bristles and abrasive cleaners, which can affect the finish. |
| Heavy atmospheric grime | A solution specified by the siding maker | Formulas differ; do not assume one recipe fits every product. |
| Mildew | The siding maker’s diluted mildew-cleaner instructions | Use the specified concentration and protect plants and yourself. |
| A specific stubborn stain | A cleaner compatible with the siding, tested in a hidden area | Follow both the cleaner label and siding-care instructions. |
| Large or difficult areas | A commercial cleaner or pressure washer only if product instructions allow it | Manufacturer guidance on pressure washing is not uniform. |
Seven methods, from gentlest to more targeted
1. Let rain or a garden hose handle routine dirt
Heavy rain can help clean siding, and an ordinary garden-hose rinse is often enough for loose dirt. Rinse sheltered areas such as under eaves and porches, where rain reaches less often. The Vinyl Siding Institute’s cleaning guidance and PEPA’s vinyl-siding advice both describe rain or a hose as a routine option.
2. Wash with mild soap and water
For dirt that remains after rinsing, use water mixed with dish soap or common laundry detergent, then rinse with clean water from a hose. CertainTeed recommends this hand-washing approach, as does PEPA. CertainTeed’s siding-care guidance

3. Brush textured or stuck-on dirt gently
Use a soft-bristle brush, such as a long-handled car-washing brush, to reach grooves and loosen dirt. Work gently rather than scrubbing hard. Stiff bristles and abrasive cleaners can change the siding’s gloss and leave an uneven, splotchy appearance, according to the Vinyl Siding Institute.
4. Use a maker-specified solution for heavy grime
Heavy atmospheric grime may need more than soap, but there is no single universal formula. The Vinyl Siding Institute lists a solution of 1/3 cup powdered detergent and 2/3 cup powdered household cleaner in 1 gallon of water for soot and grime. Georgia-Pacific gives a different recipe for its own siding: 1/3 cup detergent and 2/3 cup trisodium phosphate in 1 gallon of water. These are product-specific directions, not recipes to mix together or apply indiscriminately. Check the instructions for your siding before using either formula. 5. Treat mildew only with the specified dilution
Mildew-cleaning directions also vary. The Vinyl Siding Institute says its heavy-grime solution can be used with 1 quart of liquid laundry bleach added. CertainTeed and Georgia-Pacific instead describe detergent and trisodium phosphate with 1 quart of 5% sodium hypochlorite solution and 3 quarts of water. CertainTeed warns that stronger concentrations can damage vinyl, and Georgia-Pacific says not to exceed its recommended concentrations. Use the formula in the care instructions for your siding, follow the chemical label, and protect plants and your skin and eyes. VSI guidance; CertainTeed guidance; Georgia-Pacific guidance
6. Spot-clean stubborn stains carefully
Cleaner choice depends on the stain and the siding. The Vinyl Siding Institute’s manual lists examples such as vinegar and water or named all-purpose cleaners for gum; Lestoil for crayon; water-based cleaners for felt-tip pen; and several all-purpose cleaners for grass, grease, rust, motor oil, and topsoil. It lists Soft Scrub for oil, tar, and pencil, and a Brillo pad or Soft Scrub for paint. Those examples are not endorsements or a guarantee of compatibility with every product. Follow cleaner precautions and protect shrubs. Georgia-Pacific advises testing cleaners in an inconspicuous area and avoiding abrasives and strong solvents. If a stain persists, CertainTeed suggests asking the siding contractor for a compatible cleaner. VSI manual; Georgia-Pacific maintenance guidance; CertainTeed guidance

7. Use commercial cleaner or a pressure washer only when allowed
A commercial siding cleaner’s label applies to that product; it does not replace the siding maker’s care instructions. Simple Green’s directions for Oxy Solve House and Siding Cleaner call for diluting 1.5 cups in 1 gallon of water, applying it by sections with a soft-bristle brush, and rinsing before it dries. Its separate pressure-washer directions specify low pressure and caution around openings. Simple Green’s siding-cleaning directions
Pressure-washer rules depend on the siding product. CertainTeed does not recommend power washing its vinyl or polymer siding. Georgia-Pacific conditionally permits it for its products and specifies 1,500–2,400 PSI with a 40-degree tip, with the wand held level rather than aimed upward. These settings are not general instructions for other siding. Check your product’s manual before connecting a washer; if it prohibits power washing, use a hose and hand-washing method instead. Wash the house without streaks or damage
- Check the siding instructions. Identify the product if possible, then confirm which cleaners, dilutions, tools, and washing methods its maker permits.
- Prepare the work area. Protect landscaping from cleaning solutions. Follow the chemical label’s handling and disposal directions, and use appropriate skin and eye protection.
- Test an unfamiliar cleaner. Apply it to an inconspicuous area and check the result before cleaning a larger section.
- Work in sections from the bottom upward. The Vinyl Siding Institute and Georgia-Pacific advise this order to limit streaking.
- Rinse before the cleaner dries. Rinse the siding thoroughly with clean water, and rinse plants before and after work when using a commercial cleaner.
Do not use stronger concentrations than the product directions specify, stiff brushes, or abrasive cleaners. Avoid excessive scrubbing, and keep solutions away from landscaping. If your siding’s maker does not permit a particular cleaner or washing method, choose a gentler approach or ask the contractor who installed it about a compatible option.
