Spring yard cleanup is not just about making the lawn look neat. Done right, it is exterior preventive maintenance: it moves water away from the house, reduces pest habitat, catches winter damage early, and gets the lawn, beds, patios, fences, and drainage systems ready for heavy spring and summer use.

If you only have one dry weekend, prioritize the work in this order: remove winter debris, clear drainage paths, prune dead or damaged growth, reset planting beds and mulch, then inspect the lawn, irrigation, hardscapes, decks, fences, and exterior storage areas. That sequence matters. On our job sites, we always want to see where water is going before anyone piles on mulch, plants shrubs, repairs turf, or covers up a grading issue.

For budgeting, 2026 national consumer-cost benchmarks put basic professional spring yard cleanup around $100 to $300, with HomeGuide listing $125 to $300 and Angi listing $100 to $300 for typical seasonal cleanup. Broader yard cleanup often lands around $125 to $400, while overgrown lots, storm debris, and neglected properties commonly reach $400 to $800 or more. Hourly cleanup labor is often around $50 to $100 per hour, and more specialized construction or landscape crews may run $50 to $120 per hour depending on the state, site access, equipment, and complexity.

The checklist below is written from a contractor’s point of view. The goal is a yard that looks better, drains better, and does not create avoidable problems for the structure.

1. Remove Winter Debris From Turf, Beds, Patios, and Fence Lines

Start with the material that winter left behind: fallen limbs, matted leaves, windblown trash, dead annuals, broken pots, pet waste, pine needles, acorns, gravel kicked out by snow removal, and debris trapped along fences, window wells, steps, and foundation plantings. This is the base layer of every spring yard cleanup because you cannot accurately inspect drainage, turf, mulch depth, or hardscape movement until the loose material is gone.

Work from the house outward. Clear window wells first, then foundation beds, patios, walkways, decks, lawn edges, fence lines, and finally open turf. That approach keeps you from blowing or raking debris back onto areas you already cleaned.

What to remove first

Pick up large debris by hand before using a blower or rake. Branches, rocks, landscape fabric pins, toys, trash, and construction scraps can damage mower blades, clog a blower, or become projectiles. After that, rake or blow leaves and loose material from beds and turf into manageable piles.

Use a lighter touch on the lawn if the soil is wet. University extension guidance consistently warns against aggressive raking, rolling, mowing, dethatching, or driving equipment over saturated soil because it can compact the root zone and pull up healthy turf crowns. A good rule: if your shoes sink, leave deep impressions, or the soil smears when you step on it, wait. Let the lawn dry before heavy cleanup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate yard waste before disposal

Do not treat every pile as the same kind of waste. Leaves and grass clippings may be compostable. Brush may need to be bundled. Logs may need separate hauling. Invasive weeds, pet waste, treated lumber, old edging, broken pavers, and construction debris usually do not belong in a green-waste pile.

That separation matters at a household level and at a municipal level. EPA material data shows yard trimmings accounted for 35.4 million tons, or 12.1 percent, of municipal solid waste generation in its latest material-specific dataset. Composting clean leaves, grass, and plant trimmings keeps usable organic matter out of the landfill and can reduce disposal costs.

For a typical suburban lot, a light cleanup may take 3 to 6 labor hours. Larger tree-covered lots can take a full day or more, especially when leaves are packed into beds, drains, and fence corners. If you are hiring the work out, debris volume and haul-off are often bigger price drivers than lawn size alone.

2. Clear Gutters, Downspouts, Drains, Swales, and Low Spots

This is the spring cleanup task homeowners most often under-scope. Clean-looking beds do not help if water is dumping against the foundation. Before mulching or planting, walk the property during rain or immediately after a steady spring shower. Look for water spilling over gutters, disconnected downspouts, ponding near the house, muddy channels through mulch, clogged area drains, blocked swales, and water flowing toward basement walls, crawlspace vents, garage slabs, or low doors.

On construction and repair jobs, water tells the truth. If we see staining on siding, soft soil at the foundation, settled backfill, algae on concrete, rotted trim, or a patio pitched toward the house, we start asking where the roof and surface water are going. Spring cleanup is the right time to catch those issues before summer storms put more water into the system.

Check roof drainage from top to bottom

Clean gutters and confirm that downspouts discharge freely. A typical gutter-cleaning visit is listed around $100 to $250 in 2026 home maintenance cost data, with annual service often around $200 to $750 when gutters are cleaned every 4 to 6 months. The price depends on roof height, gutter length, debris load, ladder access, gutter guards, and whether minor repairs are included.

Do not stop at the gutter outlet. Confirm the downspout extension is connected and moving water away from the foundation. A downspout that dumps roof water 6 inches from the wall can undermine grading, soak basement walls, and contribute to slab or crawlspace moisture. As a practical target, extend discharge several feet away from the foundation where site conditions allow, and make sure the outlet is not blocked by mulch, leaves, turf, or soil.

Keep stormwater paths open

Clear yard drains, driveway drains, culvert openings, drainage swales, and curb inlets. Stormwater agencies warn that leaves, grass clippings, and yard debris blown into streets or storm drains can clog drainage systems, worsen local flooding, and add excess nutrients to waterways. In many communities, blowing yard waste into the street is not allowed.

Look especially hard at low spots along patios, walkways, retaining walls, fence lines, and the bottom of sloped yards. If water stands for more than 24 to 48 hours after normal rain, you may have compaction, grading problems, blocked drainage, or a soil infiltration issue. Do not solve that by adding mulch over the wet area. Mulch can hide the symptom while moisture keeps working against foundations, wood posts, pavers, and plant roots.

Use photos for estimates and records

Take photos of ponding, erosion channels, clogged outlets, leaning retaining walls, cracked concrete, and water close to the house. Photos taken during or right after rain are much more useful than dry-weather pictures. They help contractors diagnose the actual runoff pattern, and they give you a seasonal maintenance record if the condition gets worse.

3. Prune Dead, Damaged, Diseased, and Crossing Growth

Spring pruning should be selective. The first goal is safety and plant health, not shaping everything into a perfect outline. Remove dead, damaged, diseased, broken, and crossing branches. Cut back perennials when new growth is emerging, but where appearance and neighborhood rules allow, consider leaving some hollow stems and leaf litter temporarily because beneficial insects can overwinter in plant debris.

For shrubs and small ornamental trees, use sharp bypass pruners, loppers, or a pruning saw sized to the branch. Avoid tearing bark. Do not leave long stubs, and do not cut flush into the branch collar. For larger trees, branches near roofs, utility lines, streets, or service drops should be treated as professional work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Know what belongs in DIY cleanup

Most homeowners can safely handle small dead twigs, spent perennial stems, low shrub thinning, and light cleanup pruning from the ground. Stay conservative on cuts larger than about 2 inches in diameter unless you know the species, growth habit, and proper pruning method. Poor cuts can invite decay, deform the plant, or remove the next season’s flowers.

Do not top trees. Do not remove large limbs over a roof, deck, fence, driveway, or power line. Do not climb with a chainsaw. Large hazardous tree work has a different risk profile than normal yard cleanup, and pricing varies widely based on height, species, equipment access, crane needs, traffic control, stump grinding, emergency timing, and disposal.

Check tree rules before removal

Tree removal can require a permit depending on your city, county, tree size, species, location, and whether the property is in a protected district or near environmentally sensitive areas. Some jurisdictions require arborist documentation or replacement planting. Others exempt dead, hazardous, or small trees but still require proof or inspection.

Before removing a mature tree, check your local tree ordinance and utility-marking requirements. If excavation, stump grinding, fence replacement, drainage trenching, or new hardscape work is part of the cleanup, call 811 before digging. Spring cleanup often exposes projects that cross from landscaping into construction, and buried utilities do not care whether the job started as yard work.

4. Weed, Edge, Amend, and Mulch Beds Correctly

Once debris is removed and drainage is checked, reset the planting beds. Pull weeds while soil is slightly moist, cut clean bed edges, remove dead annuals, divide or cut back perennials as appropriate, and loosen compacted surface crust without damaging shallow roots. This is also a good time to test soil before adding lime or fertilizer. Guessing at amendments can waste money or create nutrient problems.

Mulch is useful, but too much mulch causes real damage. The practical spring spec is 2 to 3 inches total depth after bed cleanup, not another full layer every year by habit. If last year’s mulch is already thick, fluff it and spot-fill thin areas. Around trees and shrubs, extend mulch over the root zone where practical, but keep it pulled back from trunks and stems.

Avoid mulch volcanoes

Mulch should not be piled against tree trunks, shrub crowns, siding, porch posts, or fence boards. Keep it off bark and wood. Mulch packed against trunks can hold moisture, invite insects and rodents, contribute to disease, and encourage girdling-root problems. Mulch against siding or trim can also create moisture and pest issues at the building envelope.

As a field check, you should still be able to see the root flare at the base of a tree. If the trunk disappears into a cone of mulch, pull the material back and spread it outward. A wide, shallow ring is better than a narrow, deep mound.

Think in square feet, not bags

Measure bed area before ordering mulch. One cubic yard covers about 162 square feet at 2 inches deep or about 108 square feet at 3 inches deep. That number helps you avoid both shortages and over-mulching. Bagged mulch is convenient for small beds and touch-ups; bulk mulch is usually more practical for larger properties, but delivery minimums and access can affect cost.

Mulch installation pricing varies with material type, bed square footage, delivery, edging, weed pressure, slope, old mulch removal, and whether crews need to carry material a long distance. The best way to control cost is to clean and edge first, measure actual depth, and avoid paying for material the beds do not need.

5. Restart Lawn, Irrigation, Hardscape, and Outdoor Storage Maintenance

The final spring cleanup activity is a full exterior reset. This is where you move beyond leaves and mulch and look at the parts of the yard that affect safety, usability, and repair costs: turf, irrigation, patios, walkways, retaining walls, decks, fences, sheds, gates, hose bibs, exterior outlets, and storage areas.

For turf, wait until the lawn is dry and actively growing before aggressive raking, dethatching, aerating, fertilizing, or overseeding. Starting too early can compact wet soil and tear out healthy grass. Once growth is active, rake matted areas, remove remaining debris, sharpen mower blades, set mowing height appropriately for your grass type, and look for bare spots, salt damage, snow mold, vole trails, or compacted paths.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect irrigation before regular use

Turn irrigation on carefully after freeze risk has passed in your area. Check each zone for broken heads, clogged nozzles, low pressure, overspray onto siding or pavement, and heads spraying directly into mulch or against the foundation. Watch the system run, not just the controller. A buried leak can soften soil, undermine pavers, or keep a foundation area wet long before it shows up as a high water bill.

Look for hardscape and structure movement

Winter freeze-thaw cycles can move patios, steps, walkways, retaining walls, and fence posts. During cleanup, look for trip edges over 1/2 inch, loose handrails, cracked steps, leaning walls, settled pavers, exposed roots, deck boards that feel soft, and posts that move when pushed. These are not cosmetic details. They affect safety, drainage, and the useful life of the exterior improvements.

Spring Yard Cleanup Costs in 2026

Spring cleanup pricing depends on what the crew is actually doing. A light seasonal cleanup on a maintained property is very different from reclaiming an overgrown lot, hauling storm debris, clearing clogged drains, repairing grading, or handling tree work. The most common cost drivers are lot size, debris volume, tree canopy, haul-off and dump fees, slope, access, local labor rates, and whether the work is routine maintenance or a one-time rescue cleanup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Service or condition Typical 2026 US cost What affects the price
Basic spring yard cleanup $100-$300 or $125-$300 Light debris removal, leaf cleanup, edging, blowing, small-lot access
General yard cleanup About $125-$400 Lot size, debris volume, beds, lawn edges, haul-off needs
One-time cleanup About $198 average in some national benchmarks Less efficient than recurring service; more setup and hauling
Weekly or biweekly cleanup Roughly $56-$86 per visit, or around $70-$75 in some benchmarks Routine visits reduce buildup and labor per visit
Overgrown yard cleanup $400-$800+ Brush, heavy weeds, storm debris, equipment, disposal, labor hours
Landscape cleanup labor $50-$100 per hour; specialized crews may be $50-$120 per hour Region, crew type, complexity, equipment, insurance, licensing
Bulky yard-waste or junk removal About $225 per load Volume, mixed debris, transfer fees, distance, loading difficulty
Gutter cleaning $100-$250 per visit Roof height, gutter length, guards, debris, ladder access

Use those figures as planning ranges, not fixed bids. A contractor or landscape crew should be able to explain what is included: raking, blowing, edging, pruning, hauling, gutter cleaning, drain clearing, mulch delivery, disposal fees, and any repairs. If the quote just says “spring cleanup” without a scope, ask for line items.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

DIY is a good fit when the work is at ground level, the debris is light, the site drains properly, and you have a clear disposal path. Most homeowners can handle raking, small limb pickup, bed edging, light weeding, basic mulch touch-ups, patio sweeping, and simple lawn preparation over a weekend. Plan 4 to 10 hours for a typical maintained yard, more if you have heavy tree cover or multiple planting beds.

Hire a professional when the cleanup involves height, weight, water, structure, or code. That includes roof-height gutter work, large branches, chainsaw work, leaning trees, tree removal, standing water near the foundation, erosion, retaining wall movement, cracked patios, sunken walkways, deck rot, loose railings, leaning fence posts, blocked culverts, drainage corrections, and any work near overhead or buried utilities.

Call a construction or exterior repair contractor, not just a cleanup crew, when the yard problem is connected to the house. Examples include water entering a basement, mulch or soil above the siding line, negative grading toward the foundation, patio settlement at the door threshold, rotted deck framing, failing stairs, or drainage that undermines concrete. Those issues need diagnosis and repair, not just a cleaner surface.

Common Spring Yard Cleanup Mistakes to Avoid

The first mistake is starting too early. If soil is saturated, heavy raking, mowing, rolling, aerating, or equipment traffic can compact the lawn and damage turf crowns. Wait for dry conditions and active growth before aggressive lawn work.

The second mistake is cleaning beds so completely that every stem, leaf, and bit of cover disappears before temperatures are consistently warm. A tidy property still needs ecological timing. Where your HOA, fire rules, and appearance standards allow it, leave some stems temporarily and clean in stages.

The third mistake is burying problems under mulch. Do not cover ponding, poor grading, rotted edging, exposed siding, or drainage washouts with a fresh layer. Fix the water path first.

The fourth mistake is sending leaves and clippings into the street. Yard debris can clog storm drains and add excess nutrients to waterways. Bag it, compost it, mulch-mow appropriate leaf material, or follow local green-waste rules.

The fifth mistake is treating tree removal as ordinary cleanup. Permits, utility conflicts, protected trees, fall zones, roof damage, and worker safety can turn a simple-looking job into a serious liability. When in doubt, check local rules and bring in a licensed tree professional.

A Practical Weekend Sequence

If you want the cleanest workflow, use this sequence. On Friday evening or before the work starts, walk the property and photograph problem areas. If rain is in the forecast, use it to study drainage. On Saturday morning, pick up large debris, trash, pet waste, and fallen branches. Then clear window wells, patios, walks, and beds. Rake or blow loose leaves only when the lawn is dry enough to handle traffic.

Next, clear gutters, downspouts, drains, and swales. Confirm water exits away from the foundation. After that, prune dead and damaged growth from the ground, cut back perennials where appropriate, weed and edge beds, and measure mulch depth. Add mulch only where needed to reach 2 to 3 inches total, keeping it away from trunks, siding, and posts.

Finish by inspecting the systems that will carry the property through summer: mower, irrigation, hose bibs, outdoor outlets, deck boards, railings, patios, walkways, retaining walls, gates, sheds, and storage areas. Make a short repair list while everything is visible. Spring cleanup pays off most when it turns hidden winter damage into scheduled maintenance instead of emergency repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does spring yard cleanup cost in 2026?

Basic professional spring yard cleanup commonly runs about $100-$300 or $125-$300 nationally in 2026. Broader yard cleanup often falls around $125-$400, while overgrown yards, storm debris, and heavy brush can reach $400-$800 or more.

What should be included in a spring yard cleanup?

A complete spring cleanup should remove winter debris, clear gutters and drainage paths, prune dead or damaged growth, weed and edge beds, mulch correctly, and inspect the lawn, irrigation, hardscapes, decks, fences, and exterior storage areas.

When is the best time to start spring yard cleanup?

Start light pickup once snow is gone and the yard is accessible, but wait until soil dries before aggressive raking, mowing, dethatching, aerating, or using heavy equipment. If your feet leave deep impressions, the lawn is still too wet.

How deep should mulch be in spring?

Aim for 2-3 inches of total mulch depth after beds are cleaned. If existing mulch is already thick, fluff it and spot-fill thin areas instead of adding a full new layer. Keep mulch away from trunks, stems, siding, and posts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I blow leaves or grass clippings into the street?

No. Many communities prohibit it, and stormwater agencies warn that yard debris can clog storm drains, worsen flooding, and add excess nutrients to waterways. Compost, bag, bundle, or dispose of yard waste according to local rules.

When should I hire a professional instead of doing yard cleanup myself?

Hire a pro for roof-height gutter work, large branches, tree removal, drainage problems near the foundation, erosion, retaining wall movement, cracked or sunken hardscapes, deck rot, leaning fence posts, and any work near utilities.
