To refinish patio pots, identify the material, clean and dry it thoroughly, remove loose or failing finish, and use a coating made for that substrate and outdoor exposure. Keep drainage open, follow each product label for application and cure time, and consider how direct planting, sun, standing water, and winter conditions affect the finish.
There is no one coating system that suits every planter. The surface condition and material matter as much as the color: plastic needs a compatible coating, concrete needs masonry-appropriate products, and porous terracotta calls for a deliberate approach to moisture.
Choose a Method by Pot Material
| Material | Preparation | Coating approach |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic or PVC | Clean; lightly abrade a glossy surface if the product system calls for it; wipe away dust. | Use spray paint labeled for plastic or PVC, or a compatible multi-surface coating. True Value recommends paint formulated for plastic or PVC. |
| Concrete | Clean inside and outside with a suitable concrete cleaner, repair damage where practical, and let it dry completely. | Use masonry or exterior primer and exterior masonry paint. If using a concrete sealant, check compatibility and follow its label. |
| Wood | Remove loose or failing finish, sand smooth with the grain, and remove sanding dust. | Use exterior primer and exterior paint, following the products’ application and drying instructions. |
| Terracotta | Remove soil and deposits, then allow the porous clay to dry thoroughly. | Choose a moisture-management approach suited to how the pot will be used. Options include a plastic liner with a drain opening or a sealer used according to its label. |
Before choosing a finish, consider whether the pot will be planted directly or used as a cachepot, whether its surface is glossy, porous, or peeling, and how much sun, standing water, and freeze-thaw exposure it will face. These factors can affect results; the sources reviewed do not establish a guaranteed lifespan for any method.
Prepare the Pot
- Empty and inspect it. Remove plants and soil where practical. Check for cracks, loose pieces, and failing old finish. Repair damage where practical; a coating will not make a structurally damaged pot sound.
- Clean it. Wash off soil, grime, and debris with a cleaner suitable for the material. Rinse if the cleaner’s instructions call for it.
- Remove unstable finish. Scrape or sand loose paint and other failing material. For wood, sand the surface smooth and follow the grain.
- Let it dry completely. Porous materials can retain moisture after their surface appears dry. Use the coating or sealer label to determine when the pot is ready for the next step.
- Protect the work area. Mask or cover nearby paving and plants, and set the pot on a protected surface.
- Use appropriate protective gear. Follow cleaner and coating labels. True Value recommends gloves, goggles, and a dust mask when sanding, and gloves and eye protection when using chemical concrete cleaner.
Refinishing Each Type of Pot
Plastic or PVC Planters
Clean the planter and remove dust after any light abrasion. Choose spray paint labeled for plastic or PVC, or another product whose label confirms compatibility with the material and intended exposure. Do not assume an ordinary enamel or a coating intended for porous masonry will adhere to flexible plastic. Apply and recoat as directed on the label.

Terracotta Pots
Clean off soil and deposits, and let the porous clay dry thoroughly before coating. Sealing choices depend on how the pot will be planted and on the sealer’s instructions. Gardening Know How describes sealing terracotta inside and out, while Trendspot’s manufacturer care instructions recommend a plastic liner. A liner should have a drain opening, and any coating or sealer must not block the pot’s drainage path. Do not assume one sealing method is right for every plant or pot.
Apply the Finish
- Check compatibility. Confirm that primer, paint, and any sealer are intended for the pot material and can be used together.
- Apply primer if the system calls for it. Use exterior primer for wood, masonry or exterior primer for concrete, and a plastic-compatible system for plastic or PVC.
- Apply paint as directed. Follow the product label for coats, application method, recoat intervals, and suitable weather conditions.
- Seal only if appropriate. If using a sealer, confirm it is compatible with the coating and suitable for the planter’s intended use.
- Wait before refilling or planting. Let the finish dry and cure as instructed by the coating and sealer manufacturers. Drying and cure schedules vary by product and conditions, so a fixed wait time does not apply to every pot.
- Keep drainage open. Check that the pot’s drainage path is unobstructed before returning it to use.
Terracotta: Direct Planting or a Liner?
| Approach | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Plant directly in the pot | Choose any sealer based on its label and the intended use. Keep drainage open; do not assume that sealing inside and outside is suitable for every plant or product. |
| Use a plastic liner or nursery pot | A liner can help protect the painted finish and clay. Use one with a drain opening and make sure water can still drain from the planter. |
| Use the planter as a cachepot | Keep the planted inner pot’s drainage in mind and avoid leaving standing water in the outer pot. |
Safety and Product Instructions
Read product labels before cleaning, sanding, painting, or sealing. Use the protective equipment specified for the task and work with appropriate ventilation. The right weather, application method, recoat interval, and cure time depend on the products being used; follow the manufacturers’ instructions rather than a generic schedule.

When to Replace a Pot
Refinishing is most suitable when the planter is sound and its surface can be prepared. Consider replacement if it has major cracks, loose pieces that cannot be secured, or damage that makes it unstable. Paint can refresh a surface, but it cannot repair a pot that is no longer serviceable.
