Tea Leaves for Gardening: How to Use Them and What They Do

Used tea leaves can go into soil, on the surface as mulch, or into compost. Their main value is organic matter, not a guaranteed fertilizer.

Yes. Used tea leaves can be mixed into garden soil, spread on the surface around plants, or added to a compost pile. Their dependable role is as organic material that decomposes—not as a guaranteed fertilizer or plant-growth treatment. If you use tea bags, check that they are paper; New Mexico State University Extension specifically excludes polyester bags from its advice.

What used tea leaves can—and cannot—do

As tea leaves break down, they contribute organic matter. New Mexico State University Extension describes decomposing organic material as a way to release nutrients slowly and support soil structure and moisture availability. It does not provide a nutrient analysis or an application rate for spent tea leaves, so treat them as one small part of building soil rather than a complete fertilizer. For guidance on additional nutrients, base decisions on your garden’s conditions and a soil test, as NMSU recommends.

NMSU says tea leaves will not make soil too acidic and that caffeine is unlikely to harm plants in most or all of New Mexico. That is regional extension guidance, not a universal guarantee for every soil, plant, or amount. The source does not establish a safe maximum dose or a controlled result for all growing conditions. NMSU Extension’s guidance on coffee grounds and tea leaves is dated September 26, 2009.

Choose where to put them

Option What happens Good fit when
Mix into garden soil The leaves decompose in the bed and add organic material. You want to incorporate them directly and can do so without disturbing active plantings.
Spread on the soil surface They break down more slowly and may help conserve soil moisture, according to NMSU. You prefer surface placement or want to use them around established plants.
Add to compost They break down with other kitchen scraps and carbon-rich material; the resulting finished compost can be used as a soil amendment. You already compost household scraps or want to collect tea leaves with other compost ingredients.

These are practical destinations, not a tested performance ranking: the cited extension sources do not compare yields or plant growth across the three methods. NMSU advises that leaves can be added at different times of year, with surface use or composting during the growing season and incorporation during an inactive period. Treat that as regional practical guidance rather than a universal calendar. It also advises burying paper bags and filters if their appearance on the surface is undesirable.

How to compost tea leaves

Tea leaves count as a nitrogen-rich “green” in compost guidance. Balance them with carbon-rich “browns,” such as dry leaves, shredded paper, or woody material. The aim is a balanced pile, not a special tea-leaf formula or measured dose.

  1. Add the leaves with other greens. Suitable paper tea bags can go in with kitchen scraps. Do not assume a bag is compostable just because it held tea; NMSU’s specific recommendation is for paper bags, not polyester.
  2. Include browns. UF/IFAS suggests roughly equal amounts of greens and browns in alternating layers when building a home pile. Maryland Extension describes composting microbes’ target mix as about 30 parts carbon to one part nitrogen. These are general pile-management guides, not instructions for measuring tea leaves against browns.
  3. Keep the pile moist, not soggy. UF/IFAS recommends turning a pile after it heats and cools. A commercial bin is optional: UF/IFAS describes bins as holding units, not a requirement for making compost.
  4. Use finished compost. Apply mature compost as a soil amendment. UF/IFAS cautions that unfinished material can continue decomposing and compete for nutrients.

For more on general pile ingredients and management, see UF/IFAS’s home composting tips and Maryland Extension’s guide to making compost at home (updated July 12, 2024).

Used tea leaves are not compost tea

Spent leaves are solid organic matter. “Compost tea” in extension guidance is a liquid made by steeping mature compost; it is not leftover drinking tea or simply tea leaves steeped in water. UF/IFAS says compost tea does not provide a measurable amount of nutrients to plants, finds disease-suppression evidence variable and inconclusive, and notes possible human-health concerns from pathogens. Those cautions concern compost tea, not the ordinary addition of spent leaves to soil or a pile.
