Then compare candidate models by dimensions, burner layout and power, oven capacity and type, cleaning method, ventilation, and installation requirements using each model’s own documentation.
Do this before finalizing cabinetry or utility locations. A nominal width is not an installation specification, and requirements can vary by model and local code.
What Is a Freestanding Gas Range?
A freestanding range combines a cooktop and oven in one appliance. These models typically have finished sides and a rear console or backguard, so they can stand alone or sit beside cabinets. A slide-in range generally has front controls and a more integrated appearance without a backsplash. Consider the backsplash you want and whether rear or front controls best suit your kitchen.
Freestanding ranges are widely sold and can be easier to install than other styles, but that does not remove the need to verify clearances, utility connections, and safety instructions for the particular model.

Start with the Kitchen and Utility Plan
Before choosing a range, establish whether the kitchen will use natural gas or propane and confirm the required gas and electrical connections. Requirements vary by model. Consult the installation instructions and applicable codes before deciding where to place connections or finalize cabinets.
Measure the opening and surrounding space rather than relying on the product’s nominal width. Record the opening width at more than one point, available depth and height, and the space needed for the door to open. Check the relationship to countertops, side cabinets, backsplash, and nearby surfaces against the exact model’s instructions.
Manufacturer guidance illustrates why model-specific checks matter: Whirlpool describes 30 inches as an approximate standard range width, while its dimension guide for one 30-inch model specifies a minimum opening width of 30 1/8 inches. These are different kinds of guidance, not a universal cutout specification. [Whirlpool buying guide] [Whirlpool model dimension guide]

GE says most of its freestanding ranges fit standard 30-inch cabinet cutout widths. Its clearance guidance provides general examples, but explicitly directs readers to the specific model instructions because installations vary. Make a shortlist and compare the same specifications for each model. More burners, capacity, or burner power is not automatically better if it does not fit your cookware, cooking habits, space, or utility plan.
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Dimensions and clearances | Actual width, depth, height, door-open clearance, cabinet opening, and required clearances in the model documentation. |
| Fuel and connections | Natural gas or propane compatibility, gas connection requirements, and electrical supply. |
| Style and controls | Finished sides, backguard, and rear or front control location; consider the planned backsplash and how you use controls. |
| Oven | Capacity, oven type, rack arrangement, and whether the features suit the dishes you prepare. |
| Cooktop | Burner count, layout, and power relative to your cookware and cooking habits. |
| Cleaning | Cleaning method and whether its maintenance suits your household. |
| Ventilation and installation | Range and hood instructions, required clearances, anti-tip bracket installation, and any local requirements. |
Use manufacturer documentation for product specifications and installation requirements. It can establish what a model requires, but it should not be presented as independent comparative testing. The sources reviewed for this guide do not establish one model as the best-performing range.

- 30-Inch Freestanding Gas Range – Designed to fit standard kitchen spaces with a clean black finish
- Large Oven Capacity – Provides ample space for baking, roasting, and everyday family meals
- Sealed Gas Burners – Contain spills for easier cleanup and deliver consistent cooking performance
- Front Control Knobs – Simple, convenient access for precise heat and oven adjustments

Plan Ventilation and Safety
Include ventilation in the remodel plan rather than treating it as an afterthought. Consumer Reports advises turning on the range hood and opening windows and doors when cooking with gas. The right hood and installation depend on the range, hood instructions, kitchen, and applicable local requirements; the sources do not establish a universal hood capacity or configuration. Follow the exact range and hood instructions for clearances and installation. GE gives general clearance examples, including an 18-inch minimum above-counter cabinet height and 30 inches above the cooking surface to an unprotected wood or metal cabinet, but cautions that installations vary. These examples are not a substitute for the selected model’s instructions. [GE clearance guidance]

Remodel Planning Checklist
- Confirm whether the kitchen will use natural gas or propane and identify the model’s utility requirements.
- Measure the cabinet opening, surrounding clearances, and door-open space.
- Compare finished sides, backguard, and control location with the planned cabinets and backsplash.
- Compare oven capacity and type, burner count and layout, burner power, and cleaning method against how your household cooks.
- Review the exact model’s installation guide before selecting cabinetry, verifying connections, making cutouts, or beginning installation.
- Coordinate the range and ventilation plan, checking the instructions for both appliances and local requirements.
- Confirm the anti-tip bracket and other safety instructions for the selected model.
When to Involve a Professional
Use the model’s installation instructions and local requirements to determine who should perform each part of the work. Gas connections, changes to utilities, ventilation work, and cabinet modifications may involve code requirements or qualified trades. Do not treat a tool list in an owner’s manual as authorization to undertake gas work; follow applicable qualifications, codes, and the appliance instructions.

What should I look for when buying a gas range?
Compare the exact model’s dimensions and clearances, gas and electrical requirements, oven capacity and type, burner count and layout, burner power, cleaning method, ventilation needs, and safety instructions. Choose features that suit your cooking habits and kitchen plan.
What is the average size of a kitchen range?
Thirty inches is a common approximate width for a full-size range, but it does not establish the required cabinet opening. Models have their own dimensions and clearances; consult the installation guide for the exact range before designing or altering cabinetry.

What is the difference between a freestanding and slide-in gas range?
Freestanding ranges typically have finished sides and a rear console or backguard. Slide-in ranges generally have front controls and a more integrated look without a backsplash. Compare the style and controls with your intended backsplash and kitchen layout.
Can I use a natural-gas range with propane?
Do not assume a range is compatible with both fuels as supplied. Check the selected model’s documentation for approved fuel options and conversion requirements, and follow the instructions and applicable codes.
Does a gas range need a hood?
Plan ventilation for gas cooking. Consumer Reports advises turning on the range hood and opening windows and doors when cooking with gas. Check the range and hood instructions and local requirements to choose an appropriate setup for your kitchen.
Does every freestanding range need an anti-tip bracket?
Follow the selected range’s instructions. The cited Whirlpool owner’s manual says its anti-tip bracket must be installed; check the manual for the model you buy and install its bracket as directed.
