The Best Winter Cover for a Window Air Conditioner Is a Two-Part System

If you can safely remove a window air conditioner, closing the window is usually the better winter option. If it must stay installed, use an indoor draft cover, an exterior weather cover, and seals around the window gaps.

The best winter cover may be no cover at all: if you can safely remove a window air conditioner and close the window, that is usually the better way to winterize it. If a cooling-only unit must stay installed while out of service, use an indoor draft barrier, a separate waterproof exterior cover, and seals around the window-side gaps.

The two covers do different jobs: the indoor layer helps block drafts through the room-facing unit, while the exterior layer protects the exposed chassis from weather. Neither replaces sealing the sash, side channels, and panel joints. Follow the instructions for your specific model, especially if it has a heating mode.

What Each Cover Does

Layer Where it goes Purpose What it does not fix
Indoor draft cover Over the room-facing portion of the unit Helps block drafts through the grille or body and can reduce dust and insect entry Gaps around the sash, side channels, or panels
Exterior weather cover Over the outdoor-exposed portion of the unit Protects the chassis from weather exposure Room-side drafts or a poorly sealed window assembly
Perimeter air sealing At sash gaps, side channels, panels, and joints Addresses leakage around the installation Unsafe support or a unit that must remain operable

First Decide Whether to Remove the Unit

Removing the air conditioner lets you close the window tightly and is preferable where it can be done safely and in accordance with the unit’s instructions. If removal would require unsafe lifting or exterior access, do not improvise: check building rules and arrange qualified help as needed.

If the unit stays installed, winterize it only while it is out of service. Do not cover a unit that needs to operate in winter unless its manufacturer explicitly permits that use and explains how to prepare it.

How to Choose a Window Air Conditioner Winter Cover

  1. Check the manual. Confirm how your model should be prepared for winter. Instructions for a cooling-only unit may not apply to a unit with a heating or reverse-cycle mode.
  2. Measure each side separately. Measure the room-facing portion for the indoor cover and the exposed chassis for the exterior cover. Compare those measurements with the manufacturer’s fit chart; the two covers may need different sizes.
  3. Choose an exterior cover that can be secured. Look for a suitable way to fasten it in wind and follow the cover and appliance instructions.
  4. Plan to seal the installation gaps. If the sash, side channels, or accordion panels leak, a cover over the unit will not seal those openings. Use materials suitable for the window and seasonal removal.
  5. Check access and building restrictions. Verify lease or building requirements and do not lean out or use a ladder in an unsafe way to install an exterior cover.

An indoor product such as Duck Brand’s reusable window A/C cover is one example of the indoor-cover category, not evidence that one brand is universally best. Its product information describes an indoor cover that secures around the unit; check its fit chart and your unit’s dimensions before buying.

How to Winterize a Window Air Conditioner That Stays Installed

  1. Confirm it will be out of service. Check the model’s instructions, particularly if it has a heating mode.
  2. Turn it off and unplug it. LG’s winter-storage guidance calls for powering off and unplugging the unit before preparation.
  3. Clean and dry it. Remove leaves and other debris, clean the filter and coils as the manual directs, and allow the unit to dry before covering.
  4. Seal the installation gaps. Check the sash gap, side channels, accordion-panel area, and joints. DOE Building America describes using rigid foam at the sides, closed-cell backer rod between sashes, plugs at the tops of side channels, and tape at joints. Choose materials compatible with your window and installation.
  5. Fit the indoor draft cover. Secure it over the room-facing portion of the unit according to its instructions.
  6. Install the exterior waterproof cover. Fit and secure it over the exposed chassis as directed by the manufacturer. Do not lean out of a window or use unsafe access to do the work.
  7. Inspect through winter. LG advises checking the unit and removing snow, ice, and debris from its top.
  8. Remove covers before cooling service resumes. Remove seasonal covers and any temporary sealing that would interfere with operation, following the unit’s instructions.

Seal the Window Assembly, Not Just the Appliance

Air can leak around the unit as well as through it. DOE Building America identifies accordion side panels, sash gaps, side channels, and joints as leakage paths. HUD guidance also describes insulating the upper opening and sealing side gaps when an air conditioner remains installed.

For substantial gaps, do not expect a fabric cover to substitute for a proper fit. Rigid foam, backer rod, and suitable tape may help address particular openings when used appropriately. HUD also depicts an older approach using 2–6 mil plastic on the exterior; treat that as a DIY method rather than a universal product recommendation, and remove seasonal exterior wrapping before cooling season.

Does an exterior cover stop drafts inside the room?

Not by itself. Drafts can come through the unit or around the sash, side channels, and panels. Use an indoor draft barrier and seal the installation gaps as appropriate.

How do I choose the right cover size?

Measure the room-facing portion for the indoor cover and the outdoor-exposed chassis for the exterior cover. Compare each measurement with that product’s fit chart rather than relying only on the air conditioner’s advertised capacity.
