Start by inventorying food and equipment, then measure the cabinet’s usable opening and choose shelves, drawers, or pull-outs to suit the contents. A deep cabinet is not automatically useful: items hidden at the back are harder to track and retrieve.
Start With What You Need to Store
Before shopping, list the items that need pantry space: daily-use dry goods, snacks, spices, cans, jars, baking supplies, bulk packages, backstock, and any appliances or serving ware. Measure the largest packages you routinely store, including their height, width, depth, and weight. Capacity is not just the amount that fits; useful capacity is visible and reachable.
Sort the list into three access zones:
- Daily use: foods and supplies you reach for often.
- Occasional use: specialty ingredients and less frequently used items.
- Backstock: reserves that are clearly labeled and arranged so older items are used first.
This zoning is a practical organization method, not a building-code requirement. Avoid planning for more storage than you can keep clean and rotate.
Compare Pantry Storage Options
Choose the access method to solve the problem you have. Fixed shelves can work well in shallow cabinets or for large bins that remain easy to see. Drawers and pull-outs can improve access to small packages, cans, and jars in deeper cabinets, but only when the organizer fits the cabinet and its load.

| Storage option | Useful when | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed shelves | Contents are shallow, visible, and easy to manage | Shelf depth, spacing, and support for intended loads |
| Full-extension drawers or internal pull-outs | Deep storage makes goods hard to see or reach | Clear opening, internal depth, slide extension, mounting, and load ratings |
| Door- or frame-mounted pull-out | A compatible cabinet can use a moving organizer | Door type and opening angle, cabinet dimensions, mounting requirements, and capacity |
Full extension means the organizer travels farther out of the cabinet than a partial-extension system; it does not mean it fits every cabinet. Blum describes its SPACE TOWER concept as full-extension inner drawers with access from multiple sides, while Rev-A-Shelf offers both full- and partial-extension products. These are product examples, not universal specifications. [Blum SPACE TOWER] [Rev-A-Shelf]
Measure the Usable Cabinet Opening
Do not choose an organizer from the cabinet’s advertised width alone. Face frames, hinges, doors, obstructions, and mounting surfaces can affect fit. Measure the narrowest clear opening, usable internal depth and height, door type and available opening angle. Then compare those measurements with the exact manufacturer installation sheet.
Also check whether the stated width refers to the nominal cabinet, clear opening, basket, or organizer. Confirm what is included—such as the frame, slides, trays, door mounts, and fasteners—and whether the trays or shelves can be repositioned.
A Häfele LAVIDO product example illustrates why nominal width is not enough: its documentation specifies cabinet-width options, a minimum internal depth, travel, hinged-door and opening-angle requirements, and per-shelf and total load ratings. Those values apply to that product example only; confirm current specifications for the exact model before purchase. [Häfele LAVIDO]

Match Access to the Contents
Use fixed shelves where the contents stay visible and manageable. Consider drawers or internal pull-outs for deeper storage or smaller goods that disappear behind one another. Large bins can work on shelves if you can remove them safely and see what is inside. For heavy items, check the stated load rating and place them where household members can lift them safely.
Adjustability can help when package heights change, but do not assume every organizer has adjustable trays. Verify that feature in the exact product documentation. Measure the actual packages and plan shelf spacing around them rather than choosing a cabinet by appearance alone.
Choose a Cool, Clean, Dry Location
Keep shelf-stable food in a cool, clean, dry place, away from dampness and temperature extremes. USDA advises a cool, dry location for canned and other shelf-stable products and says temperatures below 85°F are best. Some canned foods require refrigeration according to the label, so follow the product’s storage instructions rather than assuming everything canned belongs in a pantry. [USDA shelf-stable food guidance]
Avoid placing pantry food under the sink or beside a stove where moisture or heat may be a concern. Keep shelves free of spills and crumbs: UMN Extension notes that spilled cereal, crumbs, and sugar can attract insects. Rotate canned and dry goods so older items are used first. Food labels, packaging condition, and storage conditions all matter; do not rely on a single shelf-life estimate for every product. Make the Pantry Easier to Maintain
Use clear category boundaries and surfaces that can be wiped clean. Labels can help household members return items to the right place, and oldest-first rotation helps prevent forgotten stock. For loose bulk foods, sealed food-storage containers are an optional way to keep contents contained. USU advises using tight, clean, insect-proof metal, plastic, or glass containers for bulk foods. [USU Extension dry food storage]
If you find pest activity, identify and discard infested food, clean the cupboard thoroughly, and use sealed storage where appropriate. UMN Extension does not recommend insecticides for stored-food cupboards. [UMN Extension pantry pest guidance]

Put frequently used and heavy goods where the people who use them can reach and lift them safely. Do not reserve the easiest shelves for rarely used serving pieces if daily foods need that space. Keep occasional and backstock items in less convenient areas, but make sure they remain visible enough to track.
The ADA Standards include storage such as cabinets, shelves, closets, and drawers in their reach-range and clear-floor-space provisions. This is useful accessibility design context, but it does not establish that every private-home renovation is governed by the ADA. Confirm requirements for the project and location rather than treating the standards as a universal rule for a home pantry. [2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design]

Frequently Asked Questions
Are pull-out pantry organizers better than shelves?
Not in every situation. Shelves can work well when they are shallow or hold visible, easy-to-manage items. Drawers or pull-outs are worth considering when depth makes packages hard to see or reach, provided the organizer fits and is rated for the intended load.
How do I know whether a pull-out will fit my cabinet?
Measure the narrowest clear opening, internal depth and height, door type, and available opening angle. Check whether the product’s stated width is nominal cabinet width or a different measurement, then verify the mounting and load requirements in the exact manufacturer documentation.
What should go in the easiest-to-reach pantry space?
Give the most accessible shelves or drawers to frequently used items and to the household members who use them most. Store heavy goods where they can be lifted safely, and place occasional items and backstock in less convenient zones.
Where should I place a pantry cabinet?
Choose a location that stays cool, clean, and dry, away from dampness and temperature extremes. Avoid storing shelf-stable food under the sink or near a heat source, and follow labels for any products that require refrigeration.
How can I keep pantry food organized and reduce pest problems?
Keep shelves clean and free of crumbs and spills, label categories, and rotate older goods first. Sealed, clean containers can help contain bulk foods. If you find infested food, discard it and clean the cupboard; UMN Extension does not recommend insecticides for stored-food cupboards.
