Zero. Don’t plug one power strip, multi-outlet adapter, or extension cord into another. Plug a power strip directly into a wall receptacle, and remember that adding sockets does not increase the electrical capacity of the outlet or circuit.
Why is daisy chaining unsafe?
A power strip or multi-outlet adapter adds places to plug in equipment; it does not provide additional electrical capacity. Loads on the strip still draw power through the wall receptacle and the circuit that serves it. Other receptacles and fixtures on that circuit may be drawing power too, so a safe device count cannot be calculated from the number of sockets alone.
The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) says, “Multiple plug outlets must be plugged directly into mounted electrical receptacles; they cannot be chained together.” ESFI also advises against connecting extension cords to one another. That means no power strip into another strip, no adapter into a strip, and no extension cord joined to another extension cord.
What’s the safer way to add plug access?
Use one suitable power strip
For appropriate, lower-demand equipment, one properly rated power strip may be used if it is plugged directly into a wall receptacle. Check the product instructions and ratings, and choose a unit certified by an independent testing laboratory. Certification does not make chaining safe or increase the circuit’s capacity.

A surge protector is a type of power strip designed to address electrical surges. Surge protection does not prevent an overload; the same limits on connected loads and chaining apply.
Use extension cords only as temporary connections
ESFI describes extension cords as temporary solutions, not substitutes for permanent wiring. Match the cord’s rating to the equipment and to the conditions where it will be used, such as indoors or outdoors. Do not overload or cover a cord, and replace one that is damaged or becomes hot.

Install permanent outlets when the need is ongoing
If you regularly rely on extension cords or strips to reach equipment, consider having additional outlets installed. A qualified electrician can assess the circuit, the outlet locations, and applicable local installation requirements.
What should never be connected to strips or extension cords?
ESFI advises against using power strips or extension cords with heaters or fans because the cords may overheat and cause a fire. Do not run cords through walls, doorways, ceilings, or floors, or place coverings over them.

How can you recognize a possible overload or electrical fault?
ESFI identifies these signs as reasons to seek electrical attention:
- Lights that flicker or dim.
- Breakers that trip frequently or fuses that blow repeatedly.
- Warm or discolored wall plates.
- Cracking, sizzling, or buzzing sounds from a receptacle.
- A burning odor.
- Mild shocks or tingling when touching equipment.
Stop using a suspect outlet or cord and contact a qualified electrician to assess the problem. Do not try to solve recurring trips or heat by adding another strip.
