Granite is a practical first stone to compare for an active fireplace hearth when durability and stain resistance are priorities. Slate and sandstone are also established hearth options; limestone and marble call for more caution in exposed locations. No stone is automatically suitable for every fireplace: the right choice depends on the appliance, its instructions, local code, the hearth’s dimensions and support, and the exact slab and finish.
How to choose a fireplace hearth stone
A hearth must handle more than appearance. It can be exposed to heat, soot, impacts from logs or tools, and falling embers. A decorative surround has different demands, so do not assume that a stone suitable around the fireplace opening is also suitable on the floor in front of it.
Compare candidate stones for heat exposure, staining and cleaning, impact risk, surface texture, dimensions, weight, support requirements, appearance, and current local price. Available guidance is from suppliers rather than controlled comparative tests, so it does not establish a numeric performance ranking across stone types.

Check dimensions, thickness, and support before ordering
Do not order from a generic hearth dimension or thickness alone. The fireplace type and model, fuel, opening size, site conditions, local requirements, and installation instructions can all affect what is needed. Measure the opening and proposed hearth area, and confirm the required extension, slab thickness, total weight, and supporting assembly with the installer or relevant building authority.
The 2018 International Residential Code (IRC) provides a useful example for masonry fireplaces, but it is a model code, not a universal specification. Jurisdictions may adopt another edition or amendments, and factory-built fireplaces and stoves may have their own listed hearth-protection and clearance instructions. Check the locally adopted rules and the exact appliance manual.

What the cited 2018 IRC says for masonry fireplaces
- Section R1001.9 requires masonry fireplace hearths and extensions to be made of concrete or masonry, supported by noncombustible materials, and reinforced to carry their own weight and imposed loads. Combustible material must not remain against their undersides. 2018 IRC, Chapter 10.
- The standard minimum thickness is 4 inches for the hearth and 2 inches for its extension. The cited code provides a 3/8-inch exception for specified noncombustible materials, including stone, when the bottom of the firebox opening is at least 8 inches above the extension. The exception does not remove support or load requirements. 2018 IRC, Chapter 10.
- The extension is at least 16 inches in front of the opening and 8 inches beyond each side. For openings of at least 6 square feet, the cited dimensions increase to 20 inches in front and 12 inches beyond each side. These are 2018 IRC provisions; verify the rules that apply at your site. 2018 IRC, Chapter 10.
The IRC states: “Masonry fireplace hearths and hearth extensions shall be constructed of concrete or masonry, supported by noncombustible materials, and reinforced to carry their own weight and all imposed loads.” — 2018 IRC, Section R1001.9.
Questions to settle with a supplier or installer
- Is this hearth for a masonry fireplace, a factory-built fireplace, or a stove, and what fuel will it use?
- What are the measured opening and hearth dimensions, including the required extension?
- What thickness and support does the exact installation require, considering the stone’s dimensions and weight?
- Is the chosen stone and finish appropriate for the hearth’s exposure to heat, soot, embers, and impact?
- What cleaning, sealing, or other maintenance does the supplier recommend for this specific stone?
- Do the appliance instructions and locally adopted code impose requirements beyond the dimensions or materials you first considered?
Custom stone hearths
A 2020 K2Stone brochure lists custom hearths in slate, sandstone, and granite, with a stated minimum thickness of 2 inches and lengths up to 9 feet. Treat those as specifications in that dated supplier brochure, not as current availability or as a substitute for code, appliance instructions, or installation design.
