Measure your press and shop first, then derive the cabinet and cut list from those measurements; price the chosen materials locally rather than relying on a generic project total.
Decide whether the cabinet will be fixed or mobile, what storage it needs, and how you will keep the workpiece secured and the press guarded. Treat published plans as design examples, not proof that their dimensions, caster choices, or construction will suit your machine.
Choose Dimensions by Measuring the Press
Record the drill-press base footprint, column location and diameter, mounting points if applicable, table size and full travel, head and column arrangement, and the clearance needed for the quill, handles, motor access, and servicing. Consult the manual for model-specific mounting and clearance requirements.
Mock up the proposed cabinet sides and top with cardboard or scrap. Move the table through its full range and check the handles, quill, motor access, and drawers before cutting final parts. If storage wraps around the column, transfer-measure the column position and notch the panels to fit; do not assume another builder’s notch or footprint will work for your press.

Cabinet height depends on the press geometry and intended work. A floor-model press already sets its own table height; raising a benchtop press on a cabinet changes the working height. Check feed-handle comfort and the sizes of workpieces you expect to drill. The research does not establish one ergonomic height or universal clearance dimension.
Published plans are examples, not standards
| Example | Published detail | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Polar Beaver stand plan | 32 inches high, 20 inches long, and 18 inches wide | Use as one plan’s dimensions; check against your press and shop before adapting. |
| Kreg drill-press cabinet plan | A four-drawer design with its own listed carcass and drawer parts | Review as a drawer-layout example, not a universal cut list. |
| Kreg mobile-cart plan | Four 2×4 legs cut to 31.50 inches and four casters | Do not copy the leg length or caster count without checking your height, load, and stability needs. |
These plans demonstrate different approaches. Their listed dimensions and components do not establish compatibility or safety for a different machine or workshop.
Derive a Cut List That Fits
- Freeze the design envelope. Record the machine footprint and clearance zones, storage needs, fixed or rolling base, and available sheet stock.
- Draw the carcass. Decide which panels overlap and which fit between other panels. Mark the finished outside dimensions and any column notches, rabbets, or other machining.
- Calculate each part from actual stock. List quantity, material, thickness, finished width, finished length, and machining. Account for the actual plywood thickness rather than relying on its nominal label.
- Plan the sheet layout. Include blade kerf and grain direction, then check that the parts fit on the sheets before buying materials.
- Build the carcass square, then size drawers to it. Measure the actual openings after assembly. Drawer dimensions depend on the chosen slides, so follow the slide maker’s instructions and fit slide-dependent parts to the real opening.
Kreg’s published list is a useful example, not a universal recipe. It uses 3/4-inch plywood and drawer components for a four-drawer cabinet. Its instructions note that nominal 3/4-inch plywood can measure 23/32 inch, that adjustments may be needed, and that some parts can be fitted after the carcass is assembled. Make allowances for material variation and measure the finished case before sizing drawers and fronts.

Materials and Hardware
Choose materials and hardware to suit the design you have drawn. The referenced plans include plywood panels and drawer components; a drawer design needs slides and handles, while a mobile design may need casters. Include fasteners and joinery supplies, finish, optional edge banding, and any clamps or workholding equipment you need for safe operation.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not treat a plan’s parts list as a complete bill of materials for a different cabinet. Confirm quantities from your own cut list and verify that selected hardware fits the construction and intended load.
Estimate Project Cost from Local Prices
The research does not establish a complete current, location-specific cost for building a drill-press cabinet. Published plans and their component lists are not a reliable quote for your project. Once the design and sheet layout are settled, price the actual quantities from local suppliers and record the date.

| Workholding and tools | Clamps or other workholding bought for the project | Separate new purchases from tools already owned. |
State the supplier and pricing date in your estimate, and include a waste allowance based on the sheet layout. Prices and stock availability vary; recheck them when you are ready to buy.
Fixed or Mobile: Plan Stability and Access
A fixed cabinet and a mobile cabinet have different trade-offs. A fixed design avoids rolling the machine, while a mobile version can be repositioned but needs casters selected for the actual combined load and a plan to prevent movement during drilling. The Kreg cart plan shows that a four-caster approach exists; it does not provide a general load rating or tipping calculation for custom builds.

| Consideration | Fixed cabinet | Mobile cabinet |
|---|---|---|
| Positioning | Stays in its planned location. | Can be moved, but must not roll during drilling. |
| Base and stability | Provide a solid footprint and mount the press according to its manual. | Assess the footprint and center of mass with the machine, cabinet, and contents loaded; do not assume a plan’s casters are suitable. |
| Storage and access | Plan drawers or shelves around table travel and servicing. | Plan the same clearances and ensure storage does not compromise stability or access. |
| Cost | Price the materials and hardware in the selected design. | Include the casters and any related hardware in the local materials estimate. |
For either design, preserve access to the press controls and service points. Keep storage from obstructing table and quill adjustments. Do not assume that adding weight in drawers alone makes a mobile cabinet safe.

Safer Drill-Press Setup and Operation
Keep the machine’s guards in place and controls accessible. A cabinet does not replace the drill press’s original guarding. Consult the manual for mounting and model-specific operating or maintenance requirements.
Workholding is essential. OSHA advises operators to clamp material to the drill-press bed so it cannot spin and strike the operator. Keep the table usable and store clamps where they are easy to reach rather than burying them in clutter.
- Before starting, tighten the table and headstock locks as applicable, secure the bit, and check that guards are in place.
- Remove the chuck key and other adjustment tools before starting the machine.
- Secure the workpiece to the drill-press bed with suitable clamps so it cannot rotate.
- Stay clear of entanglement hazards: avoid loose clothing, gloves, or jewelry near the spindle, and tie back long hair.
- Follow the exact press manual for mounting, operation, and maintenance checks.
Common Planning Mistakes
- Copying a plan’s dimensions without checking the machine. Verify the base, column, table travel, quill, handles, motor access, and servicing clearance.
- Cutting drawers before the carcass is assembled. Actual openings and slide requirements determine the final drawer dimensions.
- Assuming nominal material thickness is exact. Measure the stock and adjust the joinery and cut list to match.
- Choosing casters by count alone. A plan’s caster count does not establish capacity or stability for another machine and cabinet.
- Leaving workholding until later. Make space for clamps and keep them accessible; OSHA identifies unsecured material that spins as a hazard.
FAQ
What size should a drill-press cabinet be?
There is no universal size. Measure your press’s base, column, table travel, quill and handle clearance, motor access, and service needs, then mock up the cabinet before cutting. Published plans vary and should be treated as examples.

How do I make a cut list for a drill-press cabinet?
Draw the cabinet around the actual machine and storage needs, decide which panels overlap, and derive each part from the finished dimensions and actual stock thickness. Plan the sheet layout with kerf and grain direction, then size slide-dependent drawers after the carcass is assembled.
Can I use a published drill-press cabinet plan as-is?
Only if you verify that it fits your exact press and shop. Check column position, full table travel, quill and handle clearance, and service access; plan dimensions from another machine do not prove compatibility with yours.
Should a drill-press cabinet be mobile?
That depends on your shop and design. If you choose a mobile cabinet, assess the combined machine, cabinet, and contents weight, the footprint and center of mass, and how you will prevent the cabinet from rolling during drilling. A published caster count does not establish suitability for your build.
How much does it cost to build a drill-press cabinet?
The research does not support a single current project total. Price the quantities in your completed cut list from local suppliers, include hardware and finish, separate tools already owned from new purchases, and note the date, tax, delivery, and waste allowance.
