To store sandpaper so it is easy to find and retrieve, lay out the sheets, discs, belts, and accessories you actually own before designing compartments. Flat shelves work well for sheets, while labeled compartments or pull-out trays can separate discs and smaller supplies; size each opening to your stock and test sliding fits on scrap.
There is no single best cabinet size or layout for every shop. Published examples range from compact sheet shelves to taller pull-out-shelf cabinets and a larger mixed-format plan, so choose based on your inventory and available wall space.
Inventory Your Sandpaper Before You Design
Sort your supplies by format and measure the packages or pieces that need to fit. Include any sanders or accessories you intend to store in the cabinet, not just abrasives.
- Full and reusable partial sheets
- Discs grouped by diameter, such as 5-inch and 6-inch
- Sanding belts
- Blocks, sponges, and detail-sander abrasives
- Sanders, if the design will hold them
- Small accessories you want close to the workbench
Keep backstock elsewhere if space is limited. The cabinet can hold the active supplies you use most often.

Choose a Layout That Fits Your Shop
| Design option | What it holds or offers | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Flat-sheet cabinet with pull-out shelves | Full sheets on adjustable shelves; a documented plan also includes a cutter and sheet-size guides. | Uses a tall, narrow footprint and is focused on sheets. |
| Mixed-format cabinet with sliding trays | Separate cubbies for sheets, discs, and other supplies; trays pull out for access. | Repeated, consistent dadoes are needed for a good tray fit. |
| Open organizer with shelves and movable dividers | Can accommodate assorted abrasives and, in one documented design, sanders. | Needs enough wall space for an open organizer. |
| Compact sheet shelf | Stores 11-by-9-inch sheets in a small cabinet. | Designed for sheets rather than a broad mix of supplies. |
These are examples from project plans and build guides, not the results of a comparative test. Pick the design that matches your formats, available wall area, and preference for fixed shelves or pull-out access.
Published Size Examples
| Plan example | Reported dimensions or details | Source context |
|---|---|---|
| Tall sheet cabinet | About 12 inches square and 36 inches tall, with about a dozen adjustable 1/4-inch plywood shelves. | Fine Woodworking plan by Bill Duckworth; the reviewed PDF does not establish a date. |
| Compact sheet shelf | 14-1/2 inches high, 12 inches deep, and 10-1/2 inches wide; openings are 1/2 inch wider and deeper than an 11-by-9-inch sheet, with shelves 1-1/2 inches apart. | Canadian Woodworking example; publication date was not established in the reviewed text. |
| Mixed-format cabinet | Approximately 28 inches wide, 21 inches tall, and 7 inches deep. | WOOD Magazine plan listing; the plan appeared in the September 2005 issue, and the online listing was published March 31, 2020. |
Treat these as plan-specific dimensions, not standard cabinet sizes. Measure your stock and adjust the layout before cutting.
Plan and Build the Compartments
- Measure your stock. Check the widest sheet pack, disc diameter, belt size, and the items you want to store. Allow clearance for easy retrieval rather than forcing stock into an opening.
- Choose shelf or tray access. Flat shelves suit sheets. Separate compartments help keep disc sizes and accessories sorted. Pull-out trays can make contents easier to reach.
- Mark a place for partial sheets. Keep reusable offcuts in a clearly identified location so they do not disappear among full sheets.
- Test dadoes on scrap. If trays slide in grooves, make a test cut using the intended tray stock. Check the fit before repeating the cut across the full panel.
- Assemble square and check access. Clamp squares are one documented aid for squaring a frame. Before mounting, check that trays move freely and that each format can be retrieved without removing unrelated stock.
- Label by format and grit. Mark the disc diameter and grit or identify the sheet compartment. The aim is to recognize and retrieve the abrasive you need at a glance.
Keep Sheets Flat Without Overclaiming
Bill Duckworth’s Fine Woodworking plan uses pull-out shelves for sheets. He wrote, “The shelves ride in dadoes and pull out for access to the contents, making them the perfect place to store sheets of sandpaper. The sheets stay flatter and aren’t as likely to curl on humid days.” That is Duckworth’s observation about the design, not a measured result or a guarantee that a cabinet prevents curling.

Choose fasteners and a mounting method for the wall substrate and the loaded cabinet. The project examples include cabinets screwed into wall studs and a French cleat; they do not provide load ratings. Do not assume a mounting detail documented for one wall is suitable for another.
One DIY Montreal project used a 45-degree French cleat and attached its wall-side cleat to a concrete wall with a hammer drill and Tapcon concrete screws. That is an example for that project, not a universal concrete or masonry specification. Check that your mounting method suits your wall and the cabinet’s intended contents.

Frequently Asked Questions
How should I store different sizes of sandpaper?
Sort supplies by format and size first. Use flat shelves for sheets and labeled, separated compartments for discs and smaller accessories. Leave room for the actual stock and any packages you intend to keep.
Are pull-out trays worth including?
They can improve access to stored supplies, and they appear in documented mixed-format and sheet-cabinet designs. They require grooves that fit the tray stock, so test the dado width on scrap before cutting the full panel.
How much clearance should a sheet compartment have?
Dimension openings from your own sheets and packaging. One Canadian Woodworking compact shelf example makes openings 1/2 inch wider and deeper than an 11-by-9-inch sheet; that is one design example, not a universal clearance rule.

Will a cabinet stop sandpaper from curling in humid weather?
No guarantee is supported by the reviewed sources. Bill Duckworth observed that sheets on the pull-out shelves in his design stay flatter and are less likely to curl on humid days, but this was not a controlled measurement.
How should I mount a loaded sandpaper cabinet?
Match the mounting method and fasteners to the wall substrate and expected load. Stud screws and French cleats are used in the cited projects, but the sources give no load ratings. The concrete-wall fasteners in one build should not be treated as suitable for every wall.
