Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA convertible gun and display cabinet can combine fine-furniture styling with a second mode for glassware or collectibles, but a woodworking plan is not proof of secure storage or legal compliance. Start with the documented WOOD Store plan as a reference, decide whether the cabinet will hold actual firearms and where it will be used, then verify the rules and security standard that apply there.
The WOOD Store plan describes a cabinet measuring 33 inches wide, 16 inches deep, and 74 inches high, with capacity for six rifles or shotguns and two pull-out trays in gun-cabinet mode. Those are the plan’s published specifications, not a guarantee that every firearm will fit or that the cabinet meets a security standard.
Start with the intended use
First decide whether the cabinet will display replicas and collectibles or store actual firearms. If it will hold firearms, identify the country and local jurisdiction, the setting (such as a private home or business), and the relevant firearm category. Requirements differ: Canadian federal rules vary by firearm classification, UK Home Office guidance addresses domestic storage and display security, and ATF advice in the United States discusses business premises. No single furniture plan or lock answers all of those questions.
For a display-only cabinet, prioritize the objects’ dimensions, visibility, stable shelves, and secure retention when doors open or the cabinet is moved. For actual firearms, plan security alongside appearance: consider the doors, glazing, locks, hinge-side retention, anchoring, key control, and any separate ammunition storage required by the applicable rules.

Use the published plan as a reference envelope
The WOOD Store / WOOD magazine listing gives an overall envelope of 33 inches wide by 16 inches deep by 74 inches high. It describes capacity for six rifles or shotguns and two pull-out trays in gun-cabinet configuration, and a conversion to glassware or collectibles display. The listing does not establish compatibility with every firearm, provide a broader capacity guarantee, or certify the cabinet for secure storage.
Before committing to those dimensions, check the route into the room, floor and base stability, door swing, and the actual dimensions of every intended item. In your drawings, make the conversion legible: identify which supports or shelves change, how the trays travel, and how display objects are retained when doors are opened. The published listing confirms two modes and trays, but does not disclose the construction drawings or conversion mechanism.
For a furniture-quality result, coordinate the proportions, veneer or solid-wood choices, moulding, panel alignment, finish, and hardware. Treat those as design decisions for your project, not as verified features of the listed plan. If you adapt or purchase a plan, follow its drawings for construction rather than assuming that these general design points describe its build method.

Design choices that affect security
Fine-furniture appearance and firearm security must be considered together. A lock alone does not establish resistance to attack, and ordinary furniture construction or appearance-grade glass should not be assumed to provide security characteristics associated with a certified cabinet. If a standard or legal requirement applies, use a product or design with verifiable documentation for that requirement.
The UK Home Office’s Firearms security handbook 2020 says, for its relevant domestic context, “The cabinet should be fixed to the structure and located to frustrate attack or identification by persons visiting the premises.” It also emphasizes physical security and management of access to keys. These are UK-specific guidance points, not universal building rules.
For UK firearm display cases, the handbook describes resistance equivalent to a cabinet manufactured and fitted as certified to BS7558:1992 with laminated glazing to EN 356:2000, or a cabinet certified to LPS1175 Level 4. It names a minimum laminated-glazing thickness of 11.3 mm in that standards comparison. This is UK-specific guidance; it does not mean a home-built timber cabinet meets those standards simply because it has a lock or thick glass.

Canadian federal regulations provide a separate example: requirements differ across non-restricted, restricted, and prohibited firearms, and can include unloaded status, a secure locking device, locked containers, attachment to a non-portable structure, and separation from readily accessible ammunition. This is not a complete summary of Canadian requirements. Check the governing rules for the firearm and circumstances involved.
For US commercial premises, ATF advises: “Keep display cases locked unless an employee is displaying a firearm or other item from the case.” It also recommends considering a vault or reinforced display cases with shatterproof glass after hours. This is business guidance, not a universal rule for private homes.
Compare cabinet approaches
If you are deciding between a bespoke furniture cabinet, a secure inner cabinet behind a furniture exterior, or a commercial safe, compare the documented security and practical fit rather than assuming a furniture-style option is equivalent to a safe.

Build and conversion planning
The research confirms the plan’s two display modes and two pull-out trays, but does not establish its materials, tools, joinery, or conversion procedure. Use the plan’s own drawings for those specifics. If you are adapting a design, draw both configurations before building and show how each removable support, shelf, and tray is installed and retained.
- Decide whether the cabinet is for collectibles or actual firearms, and establish the location-specific rules and security requirements first.
- Measure the intended items and the room route; compare them with the published 33 × 16 × 74 inch reference envelope.
- Draw the cabinet in both modes, including door swing, trays, shelves or supports, and how contents are retained.
- Choose materials, finish, hardware, and glazing to suit the furniture design and any documented security requirement.
- Plan structural fixing, door and hinge retention, lock and key control, and any required ammunition arrangements before construction.
- Build from the plan’s instructions or your completed drawings, then verify fit, operation, and any applicable compliance with qualified local advice.

How many firearms does the plan say it holds?
The listing describes capacity for six rifles or shotguns in gun-cabinet configuration and two pull-out trays. It does not guarantee fit for every firearm or configuration.
Does a convertible gun cabinet count as a gun safe?
Not on the basis of a woodworking plan or a lock alone. The cited plan page makes no certification claim. If you need a rated or legally compliant product, verify the applicable requirement and the product’s documentation.
What security requirements apply to a display cabinet?
They depend on location, firearm category, and setting. The UK Home Office, Canadian federal regulations, and ATF business guidance cover different contexts. Check the rules that apply to your own situation rather than treating one jurisdiction’s guidance as universal.
What should I consider when converting the cabinet to display glassware or collectibles?
Show in your drawings which supports or shelves change, how trays travel, and how objects remain retained when doors are opened or the cabinet is moved. The plan listing confirms two modes but does not disclose its construction drawings or conversion mechanism.
