The best fire pit for a backyard is one that fits the available space, the way you want to use it, and the fuel and upkeep you’re willing to manage. A movable steel bowl can suit a flexible gathering spot; a paver or masonry pit makes a more permanent feature; and a gas fire table offers a convenient, switch-operated flame. Use the ideas below to shape a concept, then confirm local rules, clearances and installation requirements for the specific product and site.
31 fire pit ideas to shape your backyard hangout
These are design concepts, not tested builds or one-size-fits-all plans. Adapt the materials, layout and fuel to your yard, and follow local rules and the selected product’s current manual.
1. Steel bowl on a gravel pad
Set a portable black steel bowl on a level gravel gathering area and surround it with movable chairs. It gives you flexibility without committing to a permanent masonry feature; steel can rust, so plan where the bowl will be stored between uses.
2. Circular paver-kit pit
A low circular paver kit can soften the hard lines of a stone patio and create a defined centerpiece. Kits require assembly and a properly prepared base; check the kit’s instructions before choosing its location.

A broad cap gives a built-in masonry pit a finished edge and a small ledge for nearby items. Keep the ledge clear of anything combustible and have a professional plan the heavy, permanent construction.
5. Gas fire table with room for drinks
A fire table puts the flame inside a table-like surface, so guests can gather around it without a separate coffee table. Choose a model designed for the fuel supply you have; natural-gas connections may require professional installation.
6. Minimal concrete bowl
A simple concrete bowl makes the fire feature a sculptural focal point without elaborate surrounding masonry. Confirm the bowl’s fuel type, siting and required clearances in its manual.
7. Natural-stone ring
Echo a nearby retaining wall or stone path with a natural-stone ring. The visual match is strongest when the stone and surrounding hardscape share a color or texture, but the fire feature still needs to meet its own construction and clearance requirements.
8. Compact bowl for a small patio
A small fire bowl may make sense where a full built-in feature would overwhelm the patio. Small does not mean exempt from clearance rules: use the manufacturer’s specified clearances and check local restrictions before placing it.

10. Gas burner with approved fire media
Conceal a gas burner beneath only the fire media specified for that unit. Use the product’s installation and operating instructions rather than assuming decorative stones or glass are interchangeable.
11. Gathering zone defined by gravel
Use a gravel pad to distinguish the fire-pit area from lawn or planting beds. The surface can help organize chairs and circulation, but it does not change the clearances required around the pit.
12. Link the patio to a garden path
Place the fire feature where it visually connects an existing patio and garden path. Keep a clear walking route so people can move around the seating without stepping through the fire area.
13. Circular seating around a round pit
Evenly spaced chairs around a round pit make conversation feel inclusive and keep the layout easy to rearrange. Allow enough room to move chairs without pushing them into the pit’s required clearance zone.
14. Square seating around a square pit
Arrange seating in a square to echo a square pit and a rectilinear patio. Check that the corners do not pinch the route guests use to enter or leave the gathering area.

22. Gas unit designed to conceal its propane tank
Some gas fire tables are designed to house a propane tank within the unit. Use only the tank arrangement and ventilation specified by the manufacturer; do not enclose or modify a tank setup yourself.

23. Low planting around a patio focal point
Low planting can frame a fire feature without blocking the view across the yard. Keep plants and mulch outside required clearances and account for their mature size, not just how they look on installation day.
24. Simple steel bowl as a flexible starting point
A basic steel bowl offers a comparatively straightforward way to try a fire-pit gathering area before investing in built-in construction. Its portability and lighter setup come with upkeep: steel can rust, and wood fires leave ash to manage.
25. Paver-kit project on a prepared base
If you want a DIY masonry-style feature, a paver kit can be a more approachable project than custom construction. It still calls for assembly, a suitable base and careful compliance with the kit’s installation instructions.
26. Gas fire table for simpler on-and-off use
Choose a gas table if switch-operated flames and less ash cleanup matter more to you than the smoke and crackle of wood. A natural-gas connection can add professional installation work; a propane model must be used as designed for its tank.

27. Stone-and-paver composition that matches the home
Combine stone and pavers in colors already used on the house or patio to make the fire area feel part of the overall hardscape. Keep the design subordinate to the product’s installation requirements rather than forcing a visual match that compromises safe placement.
28. Site the pit with wind and neighbors in mind
Think about where smoke is likely to travel before settling on a wood-burning location. A pit that sends smoke toward neighboring windows or seating can spoil the hangout for everyone, even if the physical layout otherwise fits.
29. Open-sky gathering area
An open-sky location avoids assuming that a patio roof or pergola is safe above a flame. Do not place a fire feature beneath a combustible overhead structure unless the specific product and applicable rules explicitly allow it.
30. Pit-centered layout with a clear walking route
Arrange the chairs and pit so guests can get around the seating without squeezing past the fire. A visible, unobstructed route is especially useful when people are carrying food or moving in low light.

Plan a seasonal hangout around how you will manage ash, store a portable unit and clear the space after use. A wood setup asks for ash and firewood management; a gas feature avoids wood ash but still needs the checks and upkeep in its manual.

Wood and gas offer different experiences. This Old House contributor Sal Vaglica describes the trade-off as a crackling wood fire with smoke and ash versus the ease of switch-operated, more controllable flames. The choice also affects cleanup, installation and how the fire fits your neighbors and local rules.
| Option | What it suits | Trade-offs to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Portable steel bowl | A flexible layout or a lower-commitment starting point | Comparatively easy to set up and move, but steel can rust; wood burning also means smoke and ash. |
| Paver or block kit | A more permanent feature that echoes a patio or path | Requires assembly and a prepared base; follow the kit’s installation instructions. |
| Custom masonry | A built-in feature designed around the yard | Heavy, expensive and generally a professional project. |
| Gas fire table or burner | Convenient switch-operated flames and less ash cleanup | Use the specified fuel and fire media; natural-gas connection may require professional installation, and gas equipment requires upkeep under its manual. |
| Wood-burning pit | A larger-feeling fire with crackle and a traditional fire experience | Produces smoke and ash; plan for firewood, ash cleanup and spark containment. |
Safety and site checks before choosing a design
The U.S. Fire Administration’s outdoor fire guidance, last reviewed August 8, 2024, advises keeping outdoor fire pits at least 10 feet from the home or anything that can burn. Treat that as general guidance, not as a replacement for stricter local rules or the selected product’s clearances.
Quick Recap
- Check local permission first. Rules can vary by location and may determine whether a fire pit is allowed. Ask the local fire department or building authority and review the current product manual before buying or building.
- Choose a safe location. Keep the pit away from the home and combustible materials, including overhead combustible structures unless the product and applicable rules explicitly allow that setup.
- Supervise children. The USFA says to closely watch children whenever the fire pit is in use.
- Screen wood fires. Use a metal screen over a wood-burning fire to help keep sparks from escaping; it does not make unsafe placement acceptable.
- Put the fire out before leaving. Do not leave an active fire unattended when you go inside or leave the backyard.
- Keep firefighting equipment close. The Consumer Product Safety Commission advises keeping a hose or fire extinguisher nearby. Never use gasoline to start or restart a fire, and never add liquid fuel after trying to start one.
- Be cautious with liquid-burning products. In a December 19, 2024 alert about certain alcohol or other liquid-burning fire pits, the CPSC warned of flame-jetting and fire hazards; the alert title cites two deaths and dozens of serious burn injuries. That warning concerns certain products, not all fire pits or fuels.
