A DIY fog projection screen is a narrow, controlled sheet of mist that a projector illuminates—not a room filled with fog. One documented build uses a perforated PVC pipe, fans and a plastic skirt to shape fog from a fog machine. It can be a practical special effect for a suitable indoor space, but airflow, light, equipment compatibility and safe operation determine whether the image works.
How does a fog projection screen work?
A projector sends light onto a semi-transparent plane of fog or mist, making the image appear to float in space. The key challenge is shaping and stabilizing that plane: fog that spreads through the room is not a usable screen. Panasonic describes projection on a controlled wall of mist, while a documented DIY design directs fog through a perforated tube and uses fans to guide it. These are different approaches, not a universal construction standard. Panasonic’s fog projection overview explains its misting approach; Make:’s DIY project documents the PVC-and-fan build.
What parts does the documented DIY build use?
Make:’s example combines a fog machine with an air-shaping assembly and a video projector. Its author reported a build cost of less than $150 in 2020, excluding the projector and fog machine. That is a historical cost for that particular project, not a current estimate or a complete present-day budget.

Those specifications describe one maker’s setup. They do not establish the right dimensions, fan count, electrical ratings or cooling method for every room or machine. Follow each component’s instructions and ensure the power supply and controls match the actual electrical load.

How do you shape and tune the fog?
Direct air along the fog sheet
In the Make: build, the outlet holes release fog while the fans push air in the same direction; the skirt helps concentrate the flow into a thinner line. The author describes cooling as optional for that design. Other systems may use different air-curtain or misting arrangements, so do not assume the PVC layout is the only way to create a screen.
Balance fog density and fan speed
The documented builder adjusts fog output, the internal suction fan and the screen fans according to conditions. Too little fog can make the image difficult to see; more fog may reveal detail, but excessive output can fill the space and spoil the floating-plane effect. Expect to tune the controls rather than rely on a single fixed setting.

Control room light and airflow
Ambient light and moving air affect visibility and stability. The FogScreen eMotion manual recommends a dark background and low ambient light for its commercial system. It warns that strong, constant airflow can bow or dissipate that screen, and identifies air-conditioning currents and nearby exits as conditions to consider. A homemade rig may behave differently, but turbulent room air can still disrupt a thin fog plane. Keep the projection area as still and visually dark as the venue allows.
How bright should the projector be?
The FogScreen eMotion manual recommends rear projection and a projector of at least 5,000 ANSI lumens for that product, with more output in bright conditions. That is a recommendation for its commercial equipment, not a minimum established for every DIY screen. For a homemade build, the useful brightness depends on fog density, image size, projection arrangement and ambient light; the cited sources do not establish a universal lumen threshold.

What are the alternatives to a DIY fog-machine screen?
Commercial equipment can use different methods and has its own operating requirements. Panasonic describes a professional misting approach using compressed air and pure, pressurized tap water rather than special fog fluid. Ultratec describes a Fog Curtain intended for use with low-fog systems and says it can be used as a projection screen. Confirm compatibility, availability and current requirements with the product maker before planning a venue or installation.

What safety precautions apply?
Heated theatrical fog and water-mist systems are not interchangeable. Ontario workplace guidance notes that fog and haze products have different formulations; using incompatible fluid and machines can create hazards such as ignition, incomplete vaporization or toxic by-products. It also advises managing residue on lighting, projection, electrical, electronic and fire-alarm optical equipment. Ontario film and television guidance says fog and smoke products should have a supplier safety data sheet meeting WHMIS requirements and cautions about heating certain glycerine and glycol products. Read the guidance at Ontario’s smoke and fog guidance and Ontario’s workplace guidance for fog and haze, and follow the applicable local rules and the current instructions for the specific machine and fluid.

Do not assume that any fog fluid will work in any machine, or that a DIY assembly is certified safe. Panasonic’s description of a water-mist method does not mean every homemade water-mist system is risk-free. For the commercial FogScreen eMotion device specifically, the manual requires fresh, pure water, secure installation and operation indoors between +5°C and +40°C (41°F–104°F).
