A squeaking dryer can have a simple cause, such as a loose foot or an object near the drum, or an internal part may be worn. The sound alone cannot identify the fault. Start with safe checks you can make without opening the appliance; if the noise persists, use the manual for your exact model or arrange qualified service.
1. The dryer is not level or its feet are loose
An unstable dryer can creak or squeak as it vibrates during a cycle. Check that it stands on a flat surface and that its feet are secure. Use a level to check the appliance in both directions, as Whirlpool recommends. Adjusting accessible feet is a reasonable first check; follow your model’s installation instructions.
2. A loose object is rattling or touching a moving part
Coins, fasteners, and other small items can make noise in the drum or garment pockets. Check the load and drum with the dryer stopped. An object can also get into the lint-screen housing and contact the blower wheel, according to Whirlpool Product Help. Remove only debris you can safely reach, and never run the dryer without its lint screen installed.
3. Lint buildup is affecting the belt or pulleys
Lint inside the dryer can contribute to belt or pulley squealing. Cleaning beyond the accessible lint-screen area may require removing an appliance panel. If your owner’s manual does not describe the task as user maintenance, leave internal cleaning to a qualified technician.

4. The idler pulley is worn, loose, or turning poorly
The idler pulley keeps tension on the drive belt. A worn pulley is one possible cause of a squeak, particularly when the sound seems to come from the front of the dryer. That location is a clue, not a diagnosis: have the part and the correct replacement confirmed for your model before buying or replacing anything.
5. The drive belt is worn or damaged
The belt turns the drum and may squeak as it wears. If it breaks, the drum may stop turning even while the motor runs. Belt replacement is model-specific and can require opening the cabinet, so consult the owner’s manual and use qualified service if the repair is outside its instructions.

6. Drum rollers, shafts, bearings, or glides are worn
These parts support or guide the rotating drum, and wear in any of them can cause noise. A sound near the rear may involve bearings, roller shafts, drum glides, or the belt, but sound location does not establish which component has failed.
Worn glides may also be associated with grinding, marks on clothing, or clothes catching at the drum opening. Dryer designs vary, so confirm both the diagnosis and the parts used by your exact model before ordering replacements.

7. The motor or another internal component is failing
A worn motor is one possible source of a squeak, but the sound alone is not enough to diagnose motor trouble. Motor work and other complex internal repairs should be assessed by a qualified technician.
What to check, and when to call for service
- Stop the cycle and inspect the load and drum. Remove loose items, and check for debris in the accessible lint-screen housing. Keep the lint screen installed whenever the dryer runs.
- Check that the dryer is stable. Confirm that it is on a flat surface and its feet are secure; use a level to check both directions.
- Use the owner’s manual for the exact model. If the squeak continues, contact the manufacturer or a qualified appliance technician. Internal work on belts, pulleys, bearings, rollers, glides, the motor, or lint buildup may involve cabinet disassembly or other model-specific steps.
Whirlpool warns that continuing to use a squeaking dryer can lead to further damage and a more extensive repair. Persistent noise merits timely inspection; a squeak by itself does not establish that every dryer presents an immediate emergency.

Do not use WD-40 on a dryer
Whirlpool’s guidance states: “Do not use WD-40 to grease the parts of your dryer.” It explains that WD-40 is combustible and dryers operate at high temperatures. Maytag also directs readers to a professional or the manufacturer for lubrication instructions. Use only guidance approved for your dryer model, and do not improvise with a household lubricant.
How to buy the right replacement part
Do not treat generic belts, pulleys, rollers, bearings, or glides as interchangeable. If a technician or model-specific documentation confirms a failed part, check the dryer’s model number and parts documentation before ordering. Searches such as “dryer idler pulley replacement,” “dryer drum rollers,” “dryer drive belt,” “dryer drum bearings,” and “dryer drum glides” can help identify part categories, but they do not establish compatibility or prove which part is faulty.

A household level can help with the initial stability check. A dryer lint brush is appropriate only for accessible lint-screen housing debris, as described by Whirlpool; it is not a substitute for internal service.
