Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A dishwasher problem is not always an appliance problem. On our job sites, the dishwasher bay is where appliance repair, plumbing, electrical, cabinetry, flooring, and water damage all meet in one 24-inch opening. A unit that will not drain may be caused by a clogged filter, but it may also be a blocked air gap, a disposal knockout that was never removed, or a drain hose routed wrong during a recent sink project. A leak may be a $40 gasket, or it may be the first visible sign of swollen cabinet sides and stained subfloor under the toe kick.
Start with a symptom-first approach. Check power, water supply, fill, wash circulation, drain, heat and dry, then controls. That order prevents random parts swapping and keeps you from replacing a pump when the actual problem is a kinked hose, bad shutoff valve, tripped GFCI, or blocked spray arm.
In 2026, a typical dishwasher repair in the United States often lands between $150 and $400, with many national averages around $187 to $230. Bigger repairs such as circulation pumps, motors, control boards, leak access, or electrical and plumbing corrections can push the invoice to $250 to $600 or more. If the dishwasher is close to 10 years old, has recurring leaks, or needs a repair approaching 50% of replacement cost, replacement deserves a hard look.
Start With Safety Before Any Dishwasher Troubleshooting
Before you remove a toe kick, loosen mounting brackets, or pull the dishwasher forward, make the area safe. Dishwashers combine electricity, hot water, moving parts, and finished flooring. Treat the first 10 minutes like job-site setup, not like tinkering.
Recommended Free Tools
- Turn off power. Switch off the dishwasher breaker or unplug the cord from the receptacle, usually located in the adjacent sink cabinet. Do not rely only on the control panel being off.
- Turn off the hot-water supply. Look for the small shutoff valve under the sink feeding the dishwasher. If it is frozen, corroded, or missing, that is part of the repair scope.
- Protect the floor. Use towels, a shallow pan, or thin plywood/cardboard runners before pulling the unit. Dishwasher leveling feet and metal edges can scratch hardwood, LVP, vinyl, and tile transitions.
- Do not keep resetting a tripped GFCI or breaker. Repeated trips can point to moisture intrusion, a failing heating element, damaged wiring, or motor problems.
- Photograph everything before removal. Capture hose routing, wiring, brackets, shims, insulation blanket, leveling-leg positions, and countertop clips. Reassembly is faster when clearances and routing go back the way they were.
If you see active leaking, burnt wiring smell, arcing, melted insulation, standing water near electrical components, or a swollen cabinet floor, stop the cycle and move from appliance troubleshooting to damage control.
Use a Symptom-First Diagnostic Path
Good dishwasher diagnosis follows the sequence of the machine. It needs power, water, controlled fill, circulation, drainage, heat, and a working control system. Jumping straight to a pump or control board is how homeowners and inexperienced technicians waste money.

1. Confirm Power and Controls
If the dishwasher is completely dead, check the breaker, GFCI receptacle, wall switch if one controls the dishwasher, and the door latch. Many kitchens have a dishwasher receptacle under the sink or in an adjacent cabinet. Current electrical practice commonly requires dishwasher GFCI protection, and nuisance trips should be investigated instead of ignored.
A door latch failure can make the machine act dead because the control does not see the door as closed. A latch assembly often costs $25 to $125 for the part, with labor bringing many repairs into the $150 to $300 range depending on the model.
2. Verify Water Supply and Fill
If the machine starts but no water enters, confirm the hot-water shutoff is open and the supply line is not kinked. Then check the float inside the tub. The float is a small safety device that rises with water level. If it is stuck in the raised position because of debris, the dishwasher may think it is already full.
A failed inlet valve is another common cause. The valve part is often $25 to $100, and a typical all-in fill repair may run $150 to $300. Before replacing it, a pro should verify that the valve is receiving voltage when the control calls for fill. If no command is coming from the control, the valve may not be the problem.
3. Check Wash Circulation
If the dishwasher fills but dishes come out dirty, listen for strong spray action. Weak circulation may come from a clogged filter, blocked spray arms, low water level, failed circulation pump, hard-water buildup, or poor loading.
Circulation pumps and motor assemblies are more expensive repairs. Depending on brand and access, these can land around $250 to $600. Before going there, verify water temperature, detergent, rinse aid, filter condition, spray-arm rotation, and rack loading.
4. Check Drainage
A dishwasher that leaves water in the bottom may have a clogged filter, blocked drain hose, plugged air gap, sink drain issue, disposal problem, or failed drain pump. Do not condemn the pump until the sink-side path has been checked. We have seen brand-new dishwashers called defective when the real issue was a garbage-disposal knockout left in place after a disposal replacement.
5. Check Heating and Drying
Poor drying can come from no rinse aid, plastic-heavy loads, an energy-saving cycle, low incoming water temperature, a failed heating element, bad high-limit thermostat, or control fault. A heating element part often falls around $40 to $150, with many completed repairs in the $175 to $350 range.
Dishwasher Not Draining
Drainage problems are among the most common service calls, and they are often caused outside the dishwasher itself. Work from the tub outward.
Homeowner Checks
- Clean the filter. Most modern dishwashers have a removable filter at the bottom. Rinse it under warm water and remove food debris, labels, glass fragments, and grease.
- Inspect the drain area. Look for broken glass, bones, twist ties, seeds, or plastic wrap near the sump.
- Clear the air gap. If your sink has a small chrome or finished cap near the faucet, remove the cap and clear buildup inside. Water coming out of the air gap usually means the downstream hose to the disposal or sink drain is blocked.
- Check the disposal knockout. If a garbage disposal was recently installed, the dishwasher inlet plug must be knocked out before connecting the drain hose.
- Look for a kinked hose. A drain hose pinched behind the unit or under the sink can stop drainage.
Dishwasher drain hoses must be routed to prevent dirty sink water from flowing back into the dishwasher. Depending on local code and installation, that usually means an approved air gap or a proper high loop secured high in the sink cabinet. Do not remove an air gap because it looks cluttered. In some jurisdictions it is required, and even where a high loop is accepted, the hose must be routed correctly.

If the filter, air gap, disposal connection, sink drain, and hose routing are clear, the drain pump or control command becomes more likely. A drain pump part often costs $40 to $150. All-in drain pump or clog repairs commonly run $150 to $350. A technician should verify the pump receives voltage during drain mode and that the impeller is not jammed before replacing it.
Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes Well
Poor cleaning is not always a failed pump. In many kitchens, the fix is water temperature, loading, detergent, filter maintenance, or spray-arm clearance.

Check Water Temperature First
Run the hot water at the kitchen sink for 30 to 60 seconds before starting the dishwasher. The water entering the dishwasher should typically be around 120 degrees Fahrenheit. If the water heater is set too low, or the dishwasher sits far from the heater, the first fill may be lukewarm.
Clean the Filter and Spray Arms
Remove the filter and rinse it. Then spin the spray arms by hand. They should rotate freely and not hit tall pans, utensils, or rack items. Use a toothpick or small brush to clear mineral deposits and food particles from spray holes. If a spray arm is cracked or clogged beyond cleaning, part-only pricing is often $20 to $75.
Use the Right Detergent and Rinse Aid
Use dishwasher detergent only. Hand dish soap creates suds that can cause leaks, poor draining, residue, and error codes. Store detergent in a dry cabinet; humid detergent clumps and loses effectiveness. Rinse aid is not optional in many modern machines, especially with condensation-dry designs and hard water.
Do Not Block the System
A blocked detergent door, overloaded lower rack, nested bowls, or utensils hanging below the rack can all produce dirty dishes. Before pricing a circulation pump, run one test load with proper spacing, a clean filter, rinse aid, and hot water at the sink.
Dishwasher Leaking
Treat dishwasher leaks as a building issue, not just an appliance issue. Water can travel under flooring, wick into cabinet sides, stain subfloor, and create mold odor before the homeowner notices a puddle. A small drip under the toe kick can become cabinet and flooring work if it runs long enough.
Find the Leak Before Pulling the Unit
Remove the toe kick, keep a bright flashlight on the floor pan area, and run a short cycle while watching from the front. Do this only after you can observe safely and keep hands away from live components. The goal is to identify whether the leak starts at the door, supply fitting, drain hose, pump seal, tub seam, float area, or underneath the unit.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Common leak causes include:
- Worn or dirty door gasket
- Loose water supply fitting
- Cracked or loose drain hose
- Over-sudsing from wrong detergent
- Clogged air gap or backup from sink drain
- Unlevel dishwasher leaning toward the door
- Failed pump seal
- Cracked tub or damaged internal component
A door gasket part may cost $20 to $80. Simple gasket or connection repairs often fall around $150 to $400 all-in. But if the dishwasher is trapped by flooring, the shutoff valve fails, or the cabinets are swollen, the real cost may be in access and restoration, not the appliance part.
Inspect the Surrounding Kitchen
Check the adjacent sink base, cabinet side panels, toe-kick cavity, flooring seams, base trim, and subfloor staining. Press gently on cabinet bottoms for softness. Smell for mustiness. Look at the ceiling below if the kitchen is over finished space. On remodeling projects, we often find dishwasher leaks after removing toe kicks, not because a puddle was visible in the kitchen.
Dishwasher Not Filling
If the dishwasher does not fill, begin with the shutoff valve and supply line. A closed valve after sink work is common. A kinked braided line behind the toe kick is also common after a rushed installation.
Next, check the float. Remove debris around it and make sure it moves freely. If the float switch is bad, the part may cost $15 to $75. If the inlet valve is clogged or failed, expect the valve part to run about $25 to $100, with a completed repair often around $150 to $300.

If the water supply valve under the sink is corroded, seized, or leaking, do not ignore it. A missing or unreliable shutoff turns a routine dishwasher repair into a plumbing risk. Shutoff valve replacement, new supply line, or installation kit parts may add $20 to $50 for basic materials before labor, more if access is poor or plumbing needs correction.
Dishwasher Not Drying
Drying complaints are often cycle and rinse-aid issues, especially with efficient modern dishwashers. Many newer machines use condensation drying instead of a visible exposed heating element like older units. Plastic containers will often stay wetter than glass, ceramic, and metal because they hold less heat.
Start with rinse aid, hot-water temperature, and cycle selection. Use a heated dry or sanitize option if the model has one and the load can handle it. If the dishwasher previously dried well and suddenly stopped, then test the heating element, high-limit thermostat, vent fan if equipped, wiring, and control output.
A heating element repair may cost $175 to $350 in many cases. Control-board-related drying failures can be more expensive, with boards commonly $100 to $300 or more before labor.
Noisy Dishwasher Operation
Some dishwasher noise is normal: water entering, spray arms turning, drain pump cycling, and the detergent door opening. New grinding, buzzing, rattling, or squealing deserves attention.
- Rattling: Check utensils, loose dishes, spray-arm contact, and rack parts.
- Grinding during drain: Look for debris in the sump or drain pump area.
- Buzzing with no fill: Could be an inlet valve or low-water condition.
- Loud wash motor: May point to circulation pump wear.
- Thumping: Could be a drain hose moving under the sink or behind the unit.
Do not run the machine repeatedly if a pump sounds jammed. A small piece of glass can damage an impeller, seal, or motor. If the noise began after a broken glass incident, inspect the filter and sump carefully.
Bad Odors, Residue, and Cloudy Glasses
Odors usually come from trapped food, standing water, grease, or drain backflow. Clean the filter, wipe the door gasket, inspect the lower door lip, and check the air gap or high loop. If dirty sink water is backing into the dishwasher, cleaning the tub will only hide the symptom for a few days.
Cloudy glasses can be detergent film, hard-water deposits, or permanent etching. Use rinse aid, avoid too much detergent, and run a dishwasher cleaner periodically if the manufacturer allows it. In hard-water areas, mineral buildup can clog spray arms and reduce heating performance.
If you smell electrical burning, stop using the dishwasher and turn off power. That is not a cleaning problem.
GFCI Trips, Breakers, and Electrical Code Issues
A dishwasher that trips a GFCI outlet or breaker may have a real fault. Water and electricity live close together in this appliance, so repeated resets are not a repair strategy.
Possible causes include moisture at wiring connections, a leaking component dripping onto electrical parts, a failing heating element, motor winding fault, damaged cord, pinched wiring, or a weak GFCI device. A technician should test, not guess.

Many older dishwashers were hardwired or installed before current GFCI practices. Modern installations often use a cord-and-plug connection to an accessible receptacle in the adjacent cabinet, with GFCI protection as required by current code and local enforcement. If the existing dishwasher is hardwired without an accessible disconnect, or if the receptacle is buried behind the appliance, replacement can become an electrical correction as well as an appliance swap.

Electrical work requirements vary by jurisdiction. If new wiring, a new receptacle, GFCI correction, or circuit work is needed, use a licensed electrician and follow local permit rules.
Drain Air Gaps, High Loops, and Plumbing Details
The dishwasher drain connection protects the clean side of the appliance from dirty sink water. That is why the drain hose cannot just lie low in the cabinet and connect wherever it happens to reach.
An air gap is the small fitting mounted above the sink or countertop. It physically separates dishwasher discharge from the sink drain path. A high loop routes the drain hose up high under the countertop before it drops to the disposal or branch tailpiece. Which method is allowed depends on the plumbing code adopted in your area and local enforcement.
From a construction standpoint, this matters during repair and replacement. A missing air gap, poor high loop, unapproved drain fitting, or disposal knockout problem can make a new dishwasher perform like a bad dishwasher. Basic air gap kits may cost $10 to $40, but specialty finishes, countertop drilling, plumbing changes, or cabinet access can add materially.

Most dishwasher repairs start with a service call or diagnostic fee, commonly around $75 to $125. Many appliance companies apply that fee toward the repair if approved. Labor varies widely by market, but $50 to $175 per hour is a reasonable national planning range. Emergency, weekend, urban-market, warranty, or brand-certified service can cost more.
| Problem or Repair | Typical 2026 Cost Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Service call / diagnostic | $75-$125 | Often credited toward approved repair |
| Drain clog or drain pump repair | $150-$350 | Check filter, air gap, disposal, and hose first |
| Inlet valve or fill issue | $150-$300 | Valve part often $25-$100 |
| Door gasket or leak connection repair | $150-$400 | Damage inspection may add scope |
| Heating element repair | $175-$350 | Element part often $40-$150 |
| Circulation pump or motor | $250-$600 | Brand and access drive cost |
| Control board | $250-$600+ | Board commonly $100-$300+ before labor |
| Install kit, supply line, basic air gap parts | $20-$90 parts | Labor and corrections are extra |
Cost drivers include appliance age, brand, part availability, whether the unit is built-in or portable, whether flooring traps the unit, water damage, hardwired versus cord-and-plug setup, local labor rates, warranty status, and whether plumbing or electrical corrections are needed.
Replacement pricing has a broad spread. New dishwashers in 2026 can range from about $300 to more than $2,000 before installation. That range is why the decision is different for a 4-year-old premium machine than for a 10-year-old basic unit with a $500 repair estimate.
When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro
Homeowners can handle several checks safely if they turn off power when appropriate, avoid live wiring, and do not force stuck plumbing parts. The line is crossed when diagnosis requires electrical testing, pulling the appliance into tight finished spaces, replacing internal pumps, correcting plumbing, or dealing with active leakage.
Reasonable DIY Checks
- Clean the filter and sump area
- Inspect and rinse spray arms
- Clear the countertop air gap
- Confirm the disposal knockout was removed after disposal replacement
- Check for obvious drain hose kinks under the sink
- Run hot water at the sink before starting
- Add rinse aid and use dishwasher detergent only
- Improve loading so spray arms and detergent doors are not blocked
- Wipe the door gasket and lower door edge
Call an Appliance Technician
- The dishwasher fills but will not circulate
- The drain path is clear but the unit will not pump out
- Error codes persist after basic reset and cleaning
- The latch, float switch, inlet valve, pump, heater, or board needs testing
- You need voltage, continuity, or control-command verification
Call a Plumber
- The shutoff valve is missing, frozen, corroded, or leaking
- The drain connection is wrong or repeatedly backing up
- An air gap or high loop correction is needed
- The sink/disposal drain is blocked
- Supply or drain piping needs modification
Call an Electrician
- The dishwasher repeatedly trips a GFCI or breaker
- The unit is hardwired and needs an accessible disconnect or receptacle correction
- Wiring is damaged, melted, wet, or not code-compliant
- A new circuit, receptacle, or GFCI correction is required
Call a Contractor
- The dishwasher is trapped by flooring installed after the appliance
- Cabinet sides or toe kicks are swollen
- Subfloor staining or softness is visible
- Countertop brackets, shims, or cabinet openings need modification
- Replacement requires flooring, trim, cabinet, plumbing, and electrical coordination
When Repair Becomes Replacement
A dishwasher near or past 10 years old should be evaluated carefully before approving a major repair. We use a practical rule: if the repair approaches 50% of replacement cost, or the unit has recurring leaks or multiple failing components, replacement is usually the better long-term decision.

Whether you're experienced or just starting out, this mini ratchet set is a very professional addition to your workbench, will cover most job in home appliance, furniture, gunsmithing, bike and automotive
Replacement also makes sense when the existing installation is outdated. If the dishwasher lacks a reliable shutoff, has improper drain routing, trips GFCI protection, is hardwired awkwardly, or is trapped by flooring, the best project may be a small kitchen-systems correction: remove the old unit, fix the bay, correct plumbing and electrical details, and install the new machine properly.
Efficiency is another factor. Standard-size certified dishwashers can cost about $50 per year to run and can save about 5,800 gallons of water over their lifetime compared with less efficient models. Certified models vary, but some use roughly 2.0 gallons per cycle or more and annual energy figures can start around 80 kWh per year depending on the model. Efficiency alone does not justify replacing every working dishwasher, but it matters when the old unit already needs a costly repair.
Common Mistakes That Make Dishwasher Problems Worse
The most expensive dishwasher mistakes usually happen before a technician arrives. Avoid these:
- Pulling the dishwasher out without shutting off power and water
- Dragging leveling feet across finished flooring without protection
- Using hand dish soap or too much detergent
- Removing an air gap because it looks unnecessary
- Installing a drain hose without a proper air gap or high loop
- Skipping the disposal knockout check after a new disposal installation
- Assuming every leak is a door gasket
- Repeatedly resetting a tripped breaker or GFCI
- Ignoring swollen cabinets, musty odor, or stained subfloor
- Replacing a control board before checking voltage, float operation, wiring, and component commands
The best repair is the one that fixes the actual failure and leaves the kitchen safer than it was before. That means checking the appliance, but also checking the bay it lives in.
Final Contractor Guidance
If your dishwasher is not draining, start at the filter and sink-side drain path. If it is not cleaning, start with water temperature, filter, spray arms, loading, detergent, and rinse aid. If it is leaking, slow down and find the leak source before moving the machine. If it trips a GFCI or breaker, stop resetting and diagnose the fault.
For a newer dishwasher with one clear failed part, repair usually makes sense. For an older unit with a $400 to $600 estimate, recurring leaks, unavailable parts, or outdated plumbing and electrical conditions, replacement may be the cleaner investment. The right answer is not always the cheapest part; it is the repair that protects the appliance, the cabinets, the floor, and the house around it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my dishwasher not draining even after I cleaned the filter?
Check the sink-side drain path next: the air gap, disposal inlet, garbage-disposal knockout, drain hose routing, and sink drain. If those are clear, the drain pump, wiring, or control command may need professional testing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow much does dishwasher repair cost in 2026?
Most common dishwasher repairs run about $150 to $400, with diagnostic fees often around $75 to $125. Pump, motor, control-board, leak, access, plumbing, or electrical corrections can push repairs to $250 to $600 or more.
Is it worth repairing a 10-year-old dishwasher?
Sometimes, but be cautious. If the repair approaches 50% of replacement cost, parts are hard to get, leaks are recurring, or the installation needs plumbing or electrical corrections, replacement is usually the better choice.
Do I need a plumber, electrician, appliance technician, or contractor?
Use an appliance technician for pumps, valves, heaters, latches, controls, and error-code diagnosis. Call a plumber for shutoff valves and drain routing, an electrician for GFCI or wiring problems, and a contractor when cabinets, flooring, or water damage are involved.
Is a dishwasher air gap required by code?
It depends on the plumbing code and local enforcement in your area. Some jurisdictions require an air gap, while others may accept a properly secured high loop. Do not remove an existing air gap without confirming local requirements.

Can a leaking dishwasher damage cabinets or flooring?
Yes. Dishwasher leaks can swell cabinet sides, stain subfloor, damage flooring seams, create mold odor, and affect ceilings below. Any leak should be inspected beyond the appliance itself.
