If your gas fireplace’s pilot light goes out, first check for a gas odor. If you smell gas, do not try to relight it: leave immediately and call 911 from a safe location. If there is no odor, use only the lighting and reset instructions for your exact fireplace model; stop and call for qualified service if the pilot will not stay lit or the problem returns.
What to do first if the pilot goes out
- Check for a gas odor without approaching a suspected leak. If you smell gas, do not light the pilot, operate switches, use a phone in the affected area, or create a flame or spark. Leave the area immediately on foot and call 911 from a safe location. PHMSA advises people responding to a natural-gas odor to avoid ignition sources and leave without stopping to open windows or doors: PHMSA: Pipeline Leak Recognition and What to Do.
- If you do not smell gas, find the fireplace’s exact instructions. Check the appliance label for the manufacturer and model, then consult its owner’s manual. Relighting procedures differ by model and ignition system, so do not use a sequence intended for another fireplace.
- Follow the manual’s shutoff, wait, and lighting steps exactly. Do not skip a waiting period or repeat ignition attempts beyond what the manufacturer permits.
- Stop if the pilot will not stay lit or the fault recurs. Contact the manufacturer, your gas supplier, or a qualified gas-fireplace technician rather than trying to diagnose or repair a gas-control part yourself.
Relighting depends on the fireplace model
Gas fireplaces may have different controls, including standing-pilot knobs, installed igniters, switches, or remote controls. Even the waiting period can vary: one manual hosted by the Missouri Public Service Commission says, “Wait five (5) minutes to clear out any gas,” then directs the user to check for gas odor before proceeding. Another manual specifies a different interval. Neither timing is a universal rule; use the instructions for your own appliance.
That same manual gives a model-specific standing-pilot sequence: turn the control to OFF, wait as directed, check for gas odor, then set the control to PILOT and use the documented igniter procedure. It instructs the user to hold the control after the pilot lights and to contact a qualified service person or gas supplier if the pilot does not remain lit. Napoleon describes a different method for its fireplaces, using a control knob and ignition switch: Napoleon: How To Operate A Gas Fireplace. That procedure is not a substitute for your own model’s manual. Use a long-reach lighter only if your fireplace’s instructions explicitly permit manual lighting and call for one; some units use an installed igniter or another method.

When to stop and call for service
Do not keep trying to relight the fireplace if the pilot goes out again, does not remain lit after the manual’s allowed procedure, or the controls behave differently from the instructions. Also stop if you cannot identify the correct model-specific lighting procedure. A manufacturer troubleshooting guide lists several possible pilot, gas-supply, and component issues, so an outage alone does not identify the failed part: Archgard: Troubleshooting & FAQ.
Do not clean, adjust, bypass, or replace a thermocouple, pilot assembly, or other gas-control component based on a general troubleshooting article. Ask the fireplace manufacturer, gas supplier, or a qualified fireplace technician to assess the unit.
