A wall key does not identify how a gas fireplace ignites. First identify the appliance and gas log set, then follow the exact owner’s manual; do not assume a keyed valve means the fireplace should be lit with a match. For the Hearth & Home Technologies Grand Oak match-light set covered below, the manual says to turn the valve fully off, wait five minutes, check for gas, place a lit match on the ember bed, and then turn the valve fully on.
That sequence is specific to that model, not a universal procedure. If you smell gas, cannot identify your fireplace, or its manual does not authorize manual lighting, do not try to light it; follow the manufacturer’s guidance and contact the gas supplier or a qualified service technician.
Before You Turn the Key
Identify the fireplace and any gas log set using its rating plate and exact owner’s manual. Gas fireplaces may have a manual match-light burner, a standing pilot and control valve, or electronic or remote controls. A wall key alone does not tell you which procedure applies. Napoleon’s manufacturer guidance likewise advises consulting the manual for the specific fireplace series.
- If you smell gas: Do not try to light any appliance, touch an electrical switch, or use a phone inside the building. Leave and call the gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone, following its directions. If you cannot reach the supplier, call the fire department.
- Check the venting requirements: Do not operate a fireplace with an obstructed or uncertain vent. For the Grand Oak match-light set, the manual requires the damper to be open and the chimney to draw properly.
- Get help when needed: If you cannot identify the model or find its instructions, contact the manufacturer or a qualified service technician rather than improvising.
How Fireplace Controls Differ
| Control type | What to check | How to proceed |
|---|---|---|
| Manual match-light burner | Confirm the exact gas log set and its instructions. | Use only the lighting steps authorized by that model’s manual. |
| Standing pilot or control panel | Check the appliance rating plate and owner’s manual. | Follow the model-specific pilot and control instructions; do not substitute match-light steps. |
| Electronic or remote ignition | Identify the appliance’s controls and manual. | Use its specified ignition procedure. A key valve may not be the ignition control. |

- Read the safety information. Confirm that the manual applies to your gas log set and installation.
- Turn the manual valve completely off. Do not force the gas-control handle or use tools on it.
- Wait five minutes. This allows gas to clear before you check or try to light the set.
- Check for gas, including near the floor. If you smell gas, stop and follow the emergency guidance above. Do not proceed to lighting.
- Put a lit match on the ember bed. The manual’s diagram shows the lit match on the surface of the burning embers before opening the valve. Follow the manual’s exact directions for match placement and any covers or screens.
- Turn the manual valve completely on. If the appliance does not operate, turn off the gas according to the manual and call the service technician or gas supplier.
Do not combine steps from this manual with instructions for another brand or model. Napoleon’s separate manufacturer guidance illustrates that key-operated and control-panel pilot procedures can differ.
Venting and Carbon Monoxide
The Grand Oak manual states: “Gas-burning appliances produce smoke and carbon monoxide gas during operation.” It says the damper must be open and the chimney must draw properly; fumes can be harmful if they are not vented properly. Do not operate the set if the venting path is obstructed or you are unsure that it is working correctly.

Planning a Fireplace Wall During a Remodel
Before finish work begins, identify the appliance model, gas valve, vent route, and service access. Coordinate changes around the fireplace with a qualified installer or service technician so the work does not obstruct venting or access needed for service. Consult the appliance instructions for installation and clearance requirements.

FAQ
How do I know whether my fireplace uses a pilot or a match-light burner?
Check the rating plate and the exact owner’s manual. A wall key by itself is not enough to identify the ignition method. If you cannot identify the model, ask the manufacturer or a qualified service technician.
Do I turn the key before lighting the match?
It depends on the model. The Hearth & Home Technologies Grand Oak match-light manual says to put the lit match on the ember bed before turning the manual valve fully on. Do not apply that order to a different fireplace unless its manual instructs you to.

What if my fireplace does not light?
Follow the exact manual. For the Grand Oak match-light set, the manual says to turn off the gas according to its instructions and call the service technician or gas supplier if the appliance does not operate. Do not repeatedly try a procedure meant for another model.
Does a match-light gas log set need an open damper?
The Grand Oak manual says the damper must be open and the chimney must draw properly. Check the instructions for your own model and do not operate it if the vent is obstructed or its operation is uncertain.
