A ground loop forms when connected equipment has more than one conductive return path between points intended to share a reference. Small voltage differences between those points drive unwanted current through a signal cable, shield, or communication reference. The result may be a 50 or 60 Hz hum, video bars, unstable measurements, or data errors.

The safe remedy is to interrupt the unwanted signal-current path—not the protective-earth path. Removing a ground pin or disconnecting building grounding can turn a nuisance into a shock or fire hazard.

What “ground” is supposed to do

Several conductors are casually called “ground,” but they have different jobs:

  • System or service grounding establishes an electrical reference and helps control abnormal overvoltages.
  • Equipment grounding bonds exposed metalwork to a low-impedance fault-current path so protective devices can operate if insulation fails. OSHA describes this as a permanent, continuous path capable of safely carrying fault current: OSHA grounding guidance.
  • Signal ground and cable shields provide a reference or screening path for audio, video, data, and measurement circuits.
  • Neutral is a current-carrying circuit conductor; it is not interchangeable with protective earth downstream of the service equipment.

A ground loop is normally a signal-integrity problem, not proof that protective grounding is defective. Correctly grounded premises can still have small voltage differences because conductors have resistance and impedance and because connected equipment contributes leakage and induced currents.

How a ground loop forms

Consider two powered devices:

Equipment A protective earth ───────── Equipment B protective earth
          │ │
          └──── signal cable shield/ground ──┘

The equipment-grounding conductors provide one path. The audio shield, coax shield, USB shield, serial reference, or other interconnection provides another. Together they form a loop. Voltage drop, magnetic induction, leakage from EMI filters, incorrect neutral-to-ground bonds, separate grounding systems, cable-TV grounding, motors, HVAC equipment, dimmers, and switching supplies can put the two reference points at different potentials. Current then flows through a conductor that is also part of the signal reference.

In an unbalanced interface, that voltage drop is added directly to the desired signal. Jensen’s technical explanation and AES paper describe why this can occur even in code-compliant systems: Jensen ground-loop explanation and AES ground-loop paper.

What symptoms look like

Audio

  • A steady 50 Hz hum in regions with 50 Hz mains, or 60 Hz hum in regions with 60 Hz mains.
  • Buzz from harmonics, often changing when computers, LED drivers, dimmers, or switching supplies operate.
  • Noise that appears only after a second grounded device, monitor, amplifier, or cable-TV feed is connected.

Frequency is a clue, not proof. Magnetic pickup, poor shielding, a defective power supply, a bad connector, or gain-staging noise can sound similar.

Analog video and CCTV

  • Rolling horizontal bars or slow-moving bands.
  • Ghosting, smearing, or interference that begins when cameras, monitors, recorders, or coax distribution equipment are connected.

For coax systems, the useful question is where shield current first enters the video path. FM Systems recommends placing an appropriately rated isolation transformer at that origin rather than assuming a downstream fix will work: CCTV ground-loop guidance.

Instrumentation and communications

  • Drifting or incorrect analog readings.
  • Intermittent serial or network errors, controller resets, or corrupted data.
  • Faults that appear only when two cabinets, buildings, computers, or motor-driven loads are interconnected.

Ground-loop current is one possible cause of inaccurate measurements and malfunction; Fluke discusses grounding and separately derived systems at Fluke grounding guidance.

Ground loop or another problem?

Observed symptom More likely explanation
Constant 50/60 Hz hum after connecting two AC-powered devices Ground loop or interconnection-shielding problem
Hiss that rises with preamp gain Gain structure or equipment self-noise
Buzz changes when dimmers or LED lights operate EMI/RFI or switching-supply interference
Crackles when a connector moves Damaged cable, jack, or solder joint
Noise only on a long unbalanced cable Interference susceptibility or inadequate shielding
Rolling bars in analog CCTV Coax shield-current loop
Shock or tingling from a chassis Potentially dangerous fault or grounding problem
Breaker or GFCI trips Fault, leakage, overload, or wiring issue
Noise with one isolated device and no interconnection Probably not a conventional inter-device loop

A continuity tester can show that two points are connected, but it cannot identify the source or magnitude of unwanted current. Mains measurements, panel work, and tests involving exposed conductors belong to qualified personnel.

Safe troubleshooting sequence

1. Stop for safety symptoms

Disconnect equipment and obtain an electrical inspection if there is shock, heat, burning odor, arcing, discoloration, a damaged cord, a missing ground pin, reversed polarity, or a tripped breaker or GFCI. Never touch a suspected hazardous chassis to “test” it. OSHA warns that removing a grounding prong or using a discontinuous grounding path can cause shock, burns, or death: OSHA electrical-incident guidance.

2. Reduce the system to a minimum

Disconnect monitors, computers, USB devices, cable-TV or antenna feeds, network-connected equipment, outboard processors, additional amplifiers, and long analog runs. Reconnect one item at a time until the symptom returns. The connection that restores the noise completes the unwanted path.

3. Try one properly wired branch circuit

Where safe and practical, power interconnected equipment from the same properly wired branch circuit or distribution point. This can reduce voltage differences between grounding points, but it does not repair incorrect wiring and may not address cable-TV shields, long building interconnects, or induced magnetic fields. Do not overload receptacles, strips, or extension arrangements.

4. Inspect cable topology and routing

  • Look for unbalanced RCA, TS, or single-ended runs and incorrectly wired balanced cables.
  • Check adapters that unintentionally tie signal ground to chassis at multiple points.
  • Identify multiple coaxial shields and cable-TV or antenna connections.
  • Separate signal cables from transformers, motors, dimmers, power bricks, and parallel AC runs. If they must cross, approximately 90 degrees reduces magnetic coupling.

Routing reduces electromagnetic pickup; it does not by itself break a conductive ground loop.

5. Apply the right kind of isolation

  • Audio: use a transformer-isolated line device, passive DI, or transformer-isolated balanced interface.
  • Analog CCTV: use a video isolation transformer matched to the format, impedance, connector, and bandwidth.
  • Instrumentation and data: consider differential inputs, galvanic isolation, isolated RS-485 or serial interfaces, fiber, or isolated signal conditioners.

Transformers interrupt the conductive signal path while transferring the signal magnetically. Jensen describes signal-path isolation as the fundamental way to eliminate many system ground-loop problems: Jensen isolation guidance.

6. Escalate wiring and bonding faults

A qualified electrician or controls engineer may need to inspect downstream neutral-to-ground bonds, subpanels, grounding-electrode arrangements, equipment-grounding conductor continuity and impedance, shield terminations, motors, HVAC equipment, separately derived systems, and telecom or antenna bonding. Illegal bonds and improvised isolated ground rods can create parallel paths or different references; see Fluke’s separately derived system guidance.

Solutions compared

Approach Best use Benefits Limitations
Same properly wired circuit Nearby AC-powered equipment Low cost; often reduces reference voltage Does not correct bad wiring, induced fields, or cable-system loops
Balanced connection Professional audio and instrumentation Common-mode rejection; robust over long runs Requires genuinely balanced equipment and correct wiring; not galvanic isolation
Transformer isolator Analog audio or video Breaks signal-current path without removing safety earth Must match level, impedance, bandwidth, connectors, and isolation rating; may add loss or distortion
DI-box signal lift Instrument or unbalanced source to balanced input Transformer isolation in a purpose-designed interface Level, phantom-power, and frequency-response behavior vary by model
Coaxial video isolator Analog CCTV Blocks shield current at the video interface Not interchangeable with audio or IP/Ethernet isolators
Galvanic isolation or fiber Industrial data and control Separates reference potentials and can withstand high common-mode differences Requires protocol- and safety-rated equipment
Electrical rewiring or bonding correction Faulty or noncompliant installations Addresses the underlying installation Requires qualified design and code-compliant work
Power conditioner Some line EMI, surges, or voltage disturbances May improve power quality Usually leaves a signal-cable loop intact

Signal ground lifts are not power-ground lifts

A DI-box “ground lift” normally disconnects an audio signal-ground or shield connection between its input and output sides. Radial explains this function at Radial’s DI FAQ. The exact circuit varies, so follow the device manual.

An AC ground-lift adapter, cheater plug, removed earth pin, or disconnected protective conductor defeats a safety path. Jensen explicitly warns against defeating safety grounding: Jensen technical note. Never use one as a noise cure.

Special cases in construction and industrial systems

Motors, HVAC, and variable-speed drives

Motors, compressors, variable-frequency drives, and switching systems can inject transient or high-frequency currents into bonding networks. The resulting communication or video interference may not be explained by a simple 50/60 Hz model. Industrial-network examples are discussed by EIT at EIT earthing and surge guidance.

High-frequency and digital links

At radio and high-speed digital frequencies, inductance, layout, shield termination, and return-current geometry matter more than DC resistance alone. USB, RS-232/RS-485, industrial Ethernet, converters, and measurement systems can suffer resets or data corruption without producing audible hum. An audio isolator is not automatically suitable for these links.

Cable-TV and antenna systems

Coax shields can introduce a second grounded path into an audio or video installation. Use appropriately rated RF or galvanic isolation and preserve required bonding; do not simply disconnect a grounding or bonding conductor.

What not to do

  • Do not remove ground pins, use cheater plugs, or disconnect protective earth.
  • Do not install a separate ground rod as an improvised noise solution.
  • Do not assume a power conditioner interrupts a signal-shield loop.
  • Do not substitute an audio isolator for CCTV, Ethernet, RF, speaker-level, or high-speed digital equipment.
  • Do not open mains equipment or alter panel bonding without the required qualifications.

A practical decision path

  1. Safety symptom present? Stop and arrange electrical inspection.
  2. Symptom starts when devices are interconnected? Reduce the system and reconnect one connection at a time.
  3. Unbalanced or shielded connection involved? Try correctly wired balanced operation or a signal isolator matched to the application.
  4. No interconnection trigger? Investigate equipment faults, EMI, magnetic pickup, cable damage, or gain staging.
  5. Industrial, building-to-building, or motor-related installation? Have bonding, common-mode voltage, isolation ratings, and separately derived systems evaluated by a qualified professional.
