Memo, the Home Robot That Clears Tables and Loads the Dishwasher, Isn’t for Sale Yet

Sunday Robotics’ Memo has demonstrated espresso making, table clearing and dishwasher loading, but it remains a beta-stage system—not a retail appliance. Here is what is verified, what is claimed and what buyers still need to know.

Short answer: The robot is Memo, built by Sunday Robotics. A WIRED demonstration published November 19, 2025 showed Memo preparing espresso, collecting glasses and putting them into a dishwasher. That was a controlled demonstration, not proof of reliable performance in every home. As of August 18, 2026, Sunday says Memo is preparing for a late-2026 beta and is not available as a normal retail purchase.

What Memo is

Memo is a wheeled home robot with two arms, a vertically adjustable central body and a soft white silicone exterior. Rather than walking like a humanoid, it rolls through rooms and changes height to reach floors, tables and counters. Sunday Robotics markets it as a general-purpose household helper, not a single-function kitchen appliance.

Sunday says Memo typically works at about 50% of a human’s natural pace for many tasks, can work at around 4 feet high and can reach as high as 7 feet with its arms. Those are company specifications, not independent performance measurements.

Sunday’s product page says the robot has a low center of gravity, stable wheelbase, soft shell, no sharp corners and “compliant control” that lets a person push its limbs during manipulation. These are design claims, not evidence of certification or a complete household safety case.

What the dishwasher demonstration actually showed

In the WIRED visit, Memo rolled to a counter, filled an espresso portafilter with grounds, tamped them, inserted it into the machine, placed a cup, started the espresso and retrieved the drink. It then cleared glasses from a table, grasped two glasses in one hand and put them into a dishwasher.

That sequence combines visual recognition, navigation, grasp planning, force control, fragile-object handling and coordination around an open dishwasher. It is meaningful evidence that the system can perform a chore in a prepared setting. It is not an independently measured success rate, cycle-time study or test across different homes.

What Sunday says Memo can do

Sunday currently lists these capabilities:

  • Collect utensils.
  • Pick up baby plates and cups.
  • Handle delicate wine glasses.
  • Clear used napkins.
  • Dump food scraps into a trash bin.
  • Load and run a dishwasher.
  • Pull a shot of espresso.
  • Fold piles of socks.

The company says these skills are still being improved for reliability and generalization in real homes. The broader dishwasher workflow on Sunday’s page should therefore be distinguished from what WIRED specifically observed: the journalist saw table clearing and glass loading, not every possible combination of scraping, sorting, loading and running a machine.

How Memo learns household movements

Sunday uses a Skill Capture Glove worn by human “Memory Developers” to record demonstrations of hand and arm movements. The company says it has shipped thousands of gloves and uses the resulting data to train Memo’s onboard AI rather than requiring a person to teleoperate the robot inside a customer’s home. WIRED reported that the gloves cost the company about $400 per pair for data-collection workers.

Demonstration data is not a complete solution to household robotics. The system still has to identify an object, judge whether it is safe to grasp, navigate to it, control contact forces and recover when the object, lighting, layout or dishwasher differs from training examples. A successful human demonstration therefore does not equal a guaranteed household success rate.

How autonomous is “autonomous”?

Demonstration autonomy

A robot can perform a recorded task without an operator visibly controlling every movement. The WIRED account establishes this level for the observed demonstration.

Beta-home autonomy

A robot can work in a customer’s home without continuous control but may still need setup, supervision, intervention or recovery. Sunday’s planned beta is intended to test this stage.

Reliable household autonomy

This means repeated, safe and economical completion across different homes without human rescue. The available evidence does not establish that Memo has reached this consumer-scale standard. Sunday says it is working toward operation in homes the robot has never seen.

The real dishwasher test is harder than the video

“Loads the dishwasher” can describe several different jobs: carrying a few separated glasses, placing dishes in suitable rack positions, sorting utensils, scraping residue, avoiding blocked spray arms and starting the cycle. Real kitchens add exceptions that a clean demonstration may omit.

  • Fragile items: Thin-stemmed or wet wine glasses can slip, flex or break.
  • Nested dishes: Bowls inside bowls, utensils in cups and plates stuck together require separation decisions.
  • Food residue: Bones, sauces and sticky food may need scraping before loading.
  • Dishwasher variation: Rack geometry, hinge resistance, detergent compartments and spray-arm clearance differ by model.
  • Sharp or liquid objects: Knives, broken glass, partly full cups and hot drinks create additional hazards.
  • Moving obstacles: People, pets, chairs, rugs, thresholds and open cabinet doors can block the route.

No reviewed source provides independent breakage rates, success rates, battery runtime, noise measurements, maintenance intervals or compatibility testing across dishwasher models.

Speed, reach and safety questions for a real home

At roughly half human pace, Memo may be acceptable for unattended work but slow for a task that requires frequent supervision. Dishwasher loading is already constrained by object orientation, rack geometry and the need to avoid nesting dishes incorrectly. Sunday has not published independently verified cycle times.

Before treating the stated 7-foot reach as proof of whole-home coverage, a buyer would need answers about island clearance, deep counters, fully open dishwasher doors, narrow passages, rugs, stairs and high shelves. The typical 4-foot working height may suit many counters but will not automatically fit every layout.

Important unresolved safety questions include what happens when a child grabs an arm, a pet enters the path, a glass slips, a hot pan is presented, liquid spills near electronics or the robot loses power, network access or a sensor. The sources reviewed do not supply independent safety tests, certifications, liability terms or a complete household risk specification.

Sunday says building one Memo by hand currently costs approximately $20,000. That is an estimated internal build cost, not a consumer price. The company expects large-scale production to reduce the cost by at least 50%, but has announced no final retail price. A July update describes planned family deployments in fall 2026; that is a deployment plan, not proof that broad availability has begun.

In March 2026, Sunday announced an oversubscribed $165 million Series B at a reported $1.15 billion valuation and said the funding would help move from demonstrations toward deployment. Financing supports development capacity; it does not establish mass-market reliability.

Memo compared with 1X NEO

The closest commercially positioned alternative is 1X NEO, which publishes an order path and explicitly includes remote help for unfamiliar chores.

What a prospective beta household should verify

  • Whether the robot fits between islands, cabinets, chairs and thresholds.
  • How it handles knives, broken glass, hot cookware and partly full cups.
  • Whether an owner can pause, reposition and safely recover it.
  • Who responds when Wi-Fi, cloud services, software or sensors fail.
  • How grippers and the shell are cleaned after scraps and dirty dishes.
  • Where it parks, charges and waits, and how much noise it makes.
  • Whether video and sensor data leave the home, how long they are retained and who can access them.
  • What support, insurance, maintenance and liability terms apply.

Robot vacuums, mops and smart dishwashers are more mature, widely purchasable ways to reduce specific chores, but they do not replace a system that manipulates tableware. For messy, exception-heavy work, human help remains the established alternative.

Verdict

Memo is real technology, and the espresso, table-clearing and dishwasher demonstration was real. The evidence does not yet show a fully proven household helper that works unattended in ordinary, cluttered homes. It is not available to buy today, and its eventual price is unknown. The decisive test will be repeated, safe recovery from varied kitchens—not a single polished demonstration.

For now, Memo is most relevant to robotics enthusiasts, beta applicants, accessibility researchers and affluent early adopters willing to accept experimental hardware. Ordinary shoppers seeking an appliance replacement should wait for published reliability, safety, support and pricing information.
