These 5 smart toasters can make burnt toast much less likely—but which are worth buying?

Smart toasters are not equal: Breville reports true optical browning detection, while Cuisinart, Haier, Sage and Tower mainly provide presets or progress control. Here is how they compare.

No toaster can guarantee toast will never burn. Smart models differ widely: one uses reported optical colour sensing, while others rely on presets, timers, progress displays or saved settings. That distinction matters more than a touchscreen or Wi‑Fi badge.

Among the five models below, the Breville Eye Q Auto is the clearest match for automatic browning control. The Cuisinart SimpliTouch XL is the lower-cost guided option, Haier prioritises visibility through glass windows, Sage refines conventional controls, and Tower offers touchscreen features at a budget price. Availability, voltage and warranty vary by country.

What “smart” means on a toaster

“Smart toaster” is not a regulated category. Features fall into different levels of usefulness:

  • True sensing: optical or colour sensors measure the toast surface and end the cycle at a selected shade.
  • Adaptive heating: sensors or software alter heat during the cycle.
  • Bread-aware presets: you select bread, bagel, frozen, reheat or another programme and the toaster runs an assumed profile.
  • Progress visibility: a window, countdown, LED or lift-and-look function lets you intervene.
  • Memory: preferred settings can be stored for repeat use.
  • Connectivity: Wi‑Fi and apps add control or novelty, but do not prove better browning.

A timer displays or estimates progress; it does not necessarily measure the colour of the bread. Very thick, moist, sweet, frozen or irregular slices can therefore defeat a preset.

1. Breville Eye Q Auto: best for automatic browning control

Breville’s “Sensability” system is described as using optical sensors to track bread colour ten times per second and stop the cycle when the selected shade is reached. That makes it the strongest fit for the specific anti-burning promise. It offers seven shade levels and supports different bread types, shapes and sizes.

The sensor description comes from Breville/T3 reporting at T3’s roundup; the retrieved material does not provide independent laboratory results for this exact model. T3 listed it at $469 on February 18, 2026, and the model was presented as unavailable in the UK and Europe, where Breville commonly uses the Sage brand.

That is useful guided control, not confirmed closed-loop colour detection. A T3 review reported a three-year warranty, a £59.99/$59.99 price, an extremely hot exterior and a short cord: see the review. The launch coverage lists the presets and controls at T3.

3. Haier I‑Master Series 7: best for seeing progress

Glass windows on both sides let you watch the bread instead of relying solely on a dial. Seven levels, 12 presets, a countdown and “Crispy Side” control add flexibility, while hOn app connectivity provides remote access.

4. Sage The Smart Toast: best guided conventional design

Sage—Breville’s UK and European brand—keeps a movable lever while adding “A Bit More,” “A Quick Look” and an LED that indicates browning progress. It is a refined user-assisted toaster rather than a definitively sensor-controlled anti-burning appliance. T3 gave it five stars, but the available material does not include the review methodology or a current price.

Why an expensive smart toaster can still brown unevenly

The Revolution InstaGLO R180 is a useful premium comparison. RTINGS rated it 7.4 overall and found helpful presets, a touchscreen and a ten-second end-of-cycle countdown, but also reported side-to-side and slot-to-slot unevenness in the tested unit, with results ranging from pale to charred. Read the test at RTINGS. Consumer Reports found strong results in several laboratory categories, including full-batch and one-slice performance, speed, ease of use and cleaning: Consumer Reports.

Those findings are not contradictory. Aggregate scores can be good while a particular unit, slot or bread face browns unevenly. Heating-element layout, centring, slot geometry, crumbs and quality control still matter.

Does Wi‑Fi make a toaster better?

Not for the core anti-burning task. Haier’s hOn connection adds access and controls. Revolution’s R180 Connect advertises Wi‑Fi, weather, time/date information, notifications and over-the-air updates at its product page; the retrieved page showed a $399.95 sale signal and “Notify Me When Available.” T3 reported $449.95 for the R180 Connect Plus on August 8, 2026 at this article.

These extras do not establish more even toast, and basic operation should remain usable if an app or network fails. Do not assume Wi‑Fi permits remote heating unless the manufacturer’s safety documentation explicitly says so.

Choose by your actual use case

  • You want the toaster to measure browning: start with Breville Eye Q Auto, while treating the sensor claim as manufacturer/T3 reporting rather than independent proof.
  • You want inexpensive presets and a touchscreen: consider Cuisinart SimpliTouch XL, if sold and warrantied in your market.
  • You want to inspect thick or unpredictable bread: Haier’s viewing windows are more useful than a decorative display.
  • You prefer a familiar lever: Sage adds quick checks and incremental adjustment without requiring Wi‑Fi.
  • You want the lowest listed UK price with touchscreen features: Tower Mirage is the value-oriented choice, with limited independent evidence.
  • You mainly want reliable toast at sensible cost: compare a well-reviewed conventional toaster too; “smart” does not automatically mean more even.

How to reduce burning with any toaster

  1. Start one or two shade levels lighter when trying a new bread.
  2. Select the correct bread, bagel, frozen or reheat programme.
  3. Check the first slice and adjust; presets are profiles, not guarantees.
  4. Centre slices and avoid forcing unusually tall or thick bread into a slot.
  5. Empty the crumb tray and clean the appliance according to its manual; crumbs can affect heating and sensors.
  6. Never use metal to retrieve stuck bread, and do not leave a toaster unattended because it has a screen, countdown or app.
  7. Confirm local voltage, plug standard, warranty and service coverage before importing.
