Yes—but “record” does not mean unlimited video. Google’s 2025 wired Nest Cam Indoor (3rd gen), Nest Cam Outdoor (2nd gen) and related Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen) can save up to six hours of short event-video previews without Google Home Premium. The previews are cloud-hosted clips of up to about 10 seconds, not a free 24/7 recording timeline or a long-term archive.
Which new Nest cameras include the free previews?
Google announced three qualifying wired devices on October 1, 2025. The headline’s “new Nest Cams” refers specifically to the two cameras below; the wired doorbell uses the same six-hour preview policy.

“Nest Cam” alone is not a sufficient model description. Older cameras, battery models and legacy products can have different history limits and app requirements.

What “record without a subscription” actually means
Live viewing is free
You can open the camera’s live view without Google Home Premium. That lets you check the room, a delivery area or a pet when you are watching in real time.
Saved video is event-based
The free allowance is a rolling window of up to six hours of event-video previews. Google’s previews can be up to about 10 seconds and are created when the camera detects qualifying activity such as a person, vehicle, animal or motion.
Six hours means six hours of accumulated event previews—not six hours of continuous footage. When the rolling window expires, an event can disappear. Detection, alert settings, connectivity, camera status and Google’s processing determine what becomes available; every movement is not guaranteed to produce a retrievable clip.

What the free tier does not provide
- No free 24/7 timeline showing every second.
- No advertised free 30-day or 60-day archive.
- No guarantee that a 10-second preview contains the context before or after an event.
- No user-accessible microSD card, USB drive or equivalent local archive on the new wired models.
Google describes the history as part of its cloud video-history system. Temporary buffering during an internet interruption, where supported, is not a permanent local-recording mode.

Google renamed the second-generation Nest Aware service Google Home Premium on October 1, 2025. Google’s U.S. pricing and allowances are as follows.

How the new models compare with older Nest cameras
Google’s support documentation distinguishes models rather than applying one rule to every Nest Cam. For example, Nest Cam (battery) and Nest Doorbell (battery) are documented with up to three hours of event-video history without a subscription, while the newer wired models above receive up to six hours of previews.

Connecting a battery camera to a power source does not automatically make it an eligible wired camera for 24/7 history.

Is the footage stored locally?
No user-managed local archive is offered by the new wired Nest Cams. Current product coverage identifies no microSD slot, USB storage or built-in storage that lets you keep recordings independently of Google’s cloud service. Google’s older descriptions of temporary on-device buffering during outages should not be read as a local-storage feature.
If your priority is a memory card, NVR or NAS that you control, choose a camera designed for local storage instead of assuming a Nest Cam can be configured that way.

- No Wi-Fi: Some Nest devices can temporarily buffer events and upload them after connectivity returns, according to Google’s device announcements. This is model- and situation-dependent, not a guarantee that every event will be recovered.
- No internet: Notifications, live access and cloud history can be affected even if temporary buffering occurs.
- No power: A wired camera cannot operate indefinitely without power.
- Subscription-free operation: The free tier is not offline, self-hosted surveillance; it still depends on the camera, Google Home and Google’s cloud service.

How to use the free history effectively
- Set up the camera in the Google Home app.
- Open the camera’s live view and its video-history or video-settings controls.
- Confirm that event previews and the alert categories you need are enabled.
- Wait for, or trigger, a qualifying event such as a person, vehicle, animal or motion event.
- Review the timeline promptly, because the free allowance is a short rolling window.
- Download or otherwise preserve an important clip before it expires if the app offers that option.
Menu names and locations can change with the app version, account, region and model. Older products may still involve the Nest app or a migration step.
Who should use a Nest Cam without paying?
- People who mainly want live viewing and occasional checks of recent activity.
- Households monitoring pets, children, deliveries or a room where a short retention window is acceptable.
- Google Home users who want built-in person, vehicle, animal and motion alerts without committing to a plan.
- Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra subscribers whose plan already includes Home Premium under Google’s terms.
Who needs a subscription—or a different camera?
- Anyone who may need to review an incident from yesterday or several days ago.
- Users who need a complete timeline rather than footage selected by event detection.
- Households that require local microSD, NVR or NAS storage.
- Security situations where missed detection, a short preview or an internet outage would be unacceptable.
- People who need recordings independent of Google’s cloud and account ecosystem.
For those requirements, compare a local-storage camera or self-hosted ONVIF/NVR system. Products from categories such as TP-Link Tapo, Eufy and Reolink may offer local options, but verify each current model’s storage, Google Home support and subscription terms before purchase.

The accurate takeaway is narrower than the headline: Google’s newest wired Nest Cams make basic event video available without a subscription, but they do not eliminate the company’s paid-history model. Free use answers “what happened recently?” when the camera detected and saved an event; it does not reliably answer “what happened at any point over the last several days?”
