21 Sliding Glass Door Treatments That Look Good and Actually Work

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A sliding glass door is not just a wide window. It is a high-traffic opening, a daylight source, a privacy problem at night, and often the biggest source of glare or heat gain in the room. The best window treatment has to move with the door, clear the handle, survive daily use, and look intentional across a 6-foot, 8-foot, or even 12-foot span.

On our job sites, the sliding door treatments that perform best are usually side-stack systems: vertical blinds, panel tracks, Vertical cellular shades, sliding shutters, traverse drapes, and ceiling-track curtains. Lift-up treatments can work, but they need enough headroom and they are less convenient when the door is opened 20 times a day. If you want the fast answer, use vertical blinds for budget, panel tracks for a clean modern look, vertical cellular shades for energy performance, lined drapery for bedrooms, and between-the-glass blinds only when you are already replacing the patio door unit.

Costs vary widely in 2026. A basic 72-by-80-inch patio door treatment can be as low as $150-$450 installed for vinyl vertical blinds. Custom vertical cellular shades, ceiling-track drapery, shutters, and motorized systems can land between $800 and $4,500 or more per door. The right choice is not the most expensive one. It is the one that fits the door movement, room use, child-safety needs, privacy requirements, and wall conditions.

The Short Answer for Sliding Doors

For most homes, start with the door operation. A two-panel slider has one active panel and one fixed panel. The treatment should stack toward the fixed-panel side whenever possible so the open treatment does not narrow the walk path. If the active panel slides left, the stack usually belongs on the right. If the active panel slides right, the stack usually belongs on the left.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The next decision is mount type. Use an outside mount when the trim is shallow, the handle projects 2-4 inches into the room, the wall is uneven, or you need better light blocking at the edges. Use an inside mount only when the door frame has enough depth, the hardware will not hit the handle, and the treatment can operate without dragging the sill. For many patio doors, an outside mount is the practical contractor choice.

Plan floor clearance deliberately. For curtains, drapery, vertical cellular shades, and panel systems used every day, we typically leave about 1/2 inch above the finished floor. A perfect puddle of fabric can photograph well, but it catches dust, pets, shoes, and chair legs. On a high-traffic slider, neat clearance beats drama.

Also plan stack-back. A sliding door treatment can look great closed and still fail when open if it blocks too much glass or crowds the active panel. Many vertical blind stacks need about 8-14 inches. Fabric panel tracks and drapery can need 12-30 inches depending on width, fabric fullness, and track count. On a narrow wall, that stack dimension matters as much as color.

Best Options by Use Case

Use case Best treatments Typical installed range for one 72-by-80-inch door Field note
Lowest budget Vinyl vertical blinds, basic curtains, simple roller shade $150-$600 Use wand control and replaceable parts. Avoid flimsy cord loops.
Best energy performance Vertical cellular shades, thermal-lined drapes, cellular plus side panels $700-$3,000+ Look for tight side fit and AERC-rated products when energy is the sales point.
Best modern design Panel tracks, ceiling-track ripple-fold curtains, sheer vertical shades $300-$3,000+ Keep the stack on the fixed-panel side for a clean opening.
Best for bedrooms Blackout drapes, blackout roller shades, dual roller shades $300-$3,000+ Light-filtering fabric alone is not enough for sleep or privacy.
Best for pets Panel tracks with replaceable panels, wand verticals, washable fabric drapes $300-$1,500 Choose durable, wipeable, or replaceable materials at floor level.
Best daytime view Solar roller shades, sheer vertical shades, sheer plus side drapes $300-$2,000 Solar shades often lose privacy at night when lights are on.
Best premium finish Sliding shutters, custom lined drapery, motorized shades $1,500-$4,500+ Verify header blocking and electrical plans before final order.
Best frequent door use Vertical blinds, panel tracks, traverse drapes, ripple-fold track $150-$3,000+ Side-to-side operation is usually easier than lifting a shade every time.

2026 Cost Planning

National cost guides are useful for setting expectations, but sliding doors cost more than ordinary windows because they are wider and the hardware works harder. Current 2026 references from Angi put installed window-treatment projects around $167-$1,873 for many homeowners, with an average near $1,020 and high-end custom or automated work exceeding $5,000. HomeAdvisor lists broader installed project ranges of about $600-$2,700 for blinds and shutters, $900-$2,600 for shades, and $1,800-$3,000 for valances, drapes, and curtains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Retail installation programs can be lower for simple jobs. Home Depot notes that installed blind projects commonly start around $250-$300 per window including product. Lowe’s lists installation starting at $25 per blind or shade with a $75 minimum, a $45 measurement fee credited when installation is ordered, and haul-away as an added charge. Those numbers are helpful, but custom sliding-door projects can move well above starter pricing once you add wider tracks, heavier fabric, motorization, or specialty mounting.

Treatment type Planning range for one standard patio door Typical install time Cost driver
Basic vinyl vertical blinds $150-$450 installed 1-2 hours Track quality, vane material, width
Fabric or S-curve vertical blinds $300-$800 installed 1-2 hours Fabric grade and custom sizing
Panel-track blinds $300-$1,200 installed 1-3 hours Number of panels, track channels, woven fabrics
Vertical cellular shades $700-$2,500 installed 1-3 hours Cell construction, width, cordless or motorized controls
Rod with ready-made curtains $150-$600 installed 1-3 hours Rod strength, panel count, lining
Ceiling-track custom drapery $800-$3,000+ installed 2-4 hours after fabrication Fabric yardage, lining, ceiling anchoring, track length
Sliding plantation shutters $1,500-$4,500+ installed 2-5 hours after fabrication Material, bypass track, frame build-out
Motorized shades or drapery $700-$3,500+ per door 2-6 hours plus electrical if hardwired Motor type, controls, wiring, integration

Custom fabrication usually takes 2-8 weeks after final measurement. In-stock verticals and basic rods can often be installed the same day if the door size is standard. For remodeling projects, make final measurements after flooring, casing, drywall repairs, and paint are complete. A 1/4-inch flooring change can be the difference between a clean 1/2-inch clearance and panels dragging across the room.

The 21 Treatments, With Contractor Notes

1. Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds remain the value pick for sliding glass doors because they move the same direction as the door, rotate for light control, and are easy to repair. Basic vinyl vertical blinds for a 72-by-80-inch opening commonly fall around $150-$450 installed, while better tracks and heavier vanes cost more. Use a wand-control system when possible. It reduces cord hazards and is easier for guests, kids, and tenants to understand.

2. S-Curve Vertical Blinds

S-curve vertical blinds soften the look of standard verticals. The vanes overlap in a loose wave, so the door reads more like drapery and less like an office. Expect about $300-$800 installed depending on width and material. They are a good middle ground when the homeowner wants the function of vertical blinds but a more finished living-room appearance. Specify a quiet carrier track if the door is used several times a day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Panel-Track Blinds

Panel tracks use wide fabric, solar, woven, or textured panels that slide on a multi-channel track. They look clean on modern remodels and cover large glass without the chatter of narrow vanes. A standard patio door commonly runs $300-$1,200 installed. Check stack width before ordering. Four or five panels may need 16-24 inches of wall or glass stack, and that stack should land on the fixed-panel side whenever the layout allows.

4. Vertical Cellular Shades

Vertical cellular shades are one of the strongest choices for hot or cold rooms because the honeycomb cells trap air. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that cellular shades can save up to 20% on heating energy and up to 15% on total heating and cooling energy compared with no shades in modeled scenarios, and DOE guidance points homeowners toward AERC-rated products. For sliding doors, plan around $700-$2,500 installed.

5. Sliding Plantation Shutters

Sliding plantation shutters are a premium architectural choice. Instead of swinging into the room, panels ride on a bypass or bi-fold track. They are durable, easy to clean, and strong for resale appeal, but they need depth and stack room. A typical sliding-door shutter installation can run $1,500-$4,500 or more. Use composite or PVC in humid rooms and painted hardwood only where moisture exposure is controlled.

6. Drapery on a Ceiling Track

A ceiling track gives sliding doors a clean, built-in look, especially in rooms with low headers or wide glass. It also avoids the center support bracket problem that can stop curtain rings on long rods. For a 6-foot to 8-foot door, installed custom ceiling-track drapery often lands around $800-$3,000 or more. Anchor into joists or solid blocking. Drywall alone is not enough for heavy lined panels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Drapery on an Extended Traverse Rod

A traverse rod uses a carrier system so drapes open with a wand or baton instead of being tugged by hand. Extend the rod 10-16 inches beyond the frame on the stack side, or more for thick lined drapes, so the glass can clear when open. Ready-made panels and a strong rod may cost $150-$600, while custom traverse drapery can exceed $1,500. Avoid weak telescoping rods on wide patio doors.

8. Layered Sheer and Blackout Drapes

Layering gives the most control. Sheers soften daylight during the day, while blackout-lined panels handle night privacy and sleep. This is a strong bedroom, nursery, and media-room solution. Budget $500-$3,000+ depending on whether the panels are ready-made or custom. Use a double track or double traverse rod, and keep the front blackout panels at about 1/2 inch above the floor for daily use.

9. Solar Roller Shades

Solar roller shades cut glare and reduce UV exposure while preserving some daytime view. Openness factors usually run 1%, 3%, 5%, or 10%; lower openness blocks more view and more sun. They work best on fixed panels, modern rooms, offices, and TV spaces. A patio-door installation often costs $300-$1,200. The big warning: solar shades can become see-through at night when interior lights are on, so pair them with drapes if privacy matters.

10. Blackout Roller Shades

Blackout roller shades are practical for bedrooms and media rooms, but they are not the easiest treatment for a frequently used slider because the shade must be raised before the door is used. For a standard door, expect roughly $300-$1,500 depending on fabric, cassette, side channels, and motorization. Mount high enough to clear the door trim and handles. For better edge control, add side drapes or specify side channels where the product allows.

11. Dual Roller Shades

Dual rollers combine a solar or light-filtering shade with a blackout shade in one bracket or cassette. They solve the daytime glare versus nighttime privacy problem without adding full drapery. They are heavier and need more projection from the wall, often 3-5 inches depending on the system. Installed pricing commonly runs $600-$2,000+ for a large door. Confirm that the bottom bars clear the door handle at all operating heights.

12. Woven Wood Panels

Woven wood panels bring natural texture to a large wall of glass. Bamboo, reed, grass, and jute blends look good in transitional, coastal, and organic modern rooms. On sliding doors, they are usually best as panel-track systems rather than one giant lift shade. Budget $500-$1,500+ depending on liner and fabrication. Add a privacy or blackout liner if the door faces neighbors, a sidewalk, or a lighted patio.

13. Roman Shades in Multiple Panels

Roman shades can work on sliding doors when the door is not the main traffic path or when the treatment is split into multiple sections. One large Roman shade over a 72-inch door gets heavy fast. Two or three separate panels are easier to lift and align. Plan $600-$2,000+ installed for custom work. Mount above the frame by 3-6 inches so the folded stack clears as much glass as possible.

14. Sheer Vertical Shades

Sheer vertical shades combine soft sheer fabric with vertical vanes. They filter daylight like curtains but rotate and traverse more like blinds. This is a polished option for dining rooms, living rooms, and primary bedrooms where basic vinyl verticals feel too casual. Expect roughly $600-$2,000+ for a patio door. They need careful handling around pets and small children because the fabric can snag if it is treated like a doorway curtain.

15. Ripple-Fold Curtains

Ripple-fold curtains use snaps and carriers to create consistent waves across the track. The look is calm, modern, and especially good on wide glass because the folds stay uniform. They can be ceiling-mounted or wall-mounted. Installed custom pricing often falls around $1,000-$3,000+ for a large slider. Choose 80%, 100%, or 120% fullness based on stack depth. More fullness looks richer but takes more room when open.

16. Linen Pinch-Pleat Drapes

Linen pinch-pleat drapes are a strong choice when the room wants warmth instead of a hard blind surface. Use a lining for privacy and better hang. In bedrooms, use blackout lining; in living areas, privacy lining is usually enough. For a standard door, ready-made linen-look panels can be under $600 installed, while custom lined linen drapery can reach $1,500-$3,000+. Specify weighted hems so the panels do not flare at the bottom.

17. Valance or Cornice With Side Panels

A valance or cornice hides tracks, roller cassettes, and older door headers. It is not a full privacy solution by itself, but it can make a budget treatment look built in. A simple fabric valance may add $150-$500, while a custom wood cornice can run $400-$1,200 or more. Keep the box shallow enough that it does not project awkwardly into the room, but deep enough to cover the operating hardware.

18. Smart Motorized Shades

Motorized shades make sense for wide doors, hard-to-reach glass, older homeowners, and whole-home automation. Battery motors are simpler but need charging every few months to a year depending on use. Hardwired motors are cleaner long term, especially during a remodel when walls are open. Budget $700-$3,500+ per door. If you are already opening walls, add blocking and a low-voltage route now. Fishing wire later costs more and leaves more finish repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

19. Between-the-Glass Blinds

Between-the-glass blinds sit sealed inside the patio door glass unit. They do not collect dust, pets cannot bend them, and they never swing into the walk path. The catch is that they are usually part of a replacement door, not a simple add-on to an existing slider. Consider them when the old patio door already has failed seals, worn rollers, drafts, or poor locking hardware. Door replacement often takes 1-2 days plus ordering lead time.

20. Exterior Solar Screens

Exterior solar screens stop heat before it passes through the glass, which is useful on west- and south-facing sliders. They can be fixed panels, retractable screens, or exterior shades. Expect higher durability requirements outside: UV-resistant mesh, corrosion-resistant fasteners, and wind-rated mounting. Costs vary widely, but $600-$2,500+ per opening is common for quality systems. Check HOA rules, wind exposure, and door swing or screen-track conflicts before ordering.

21. Cellular Shade Plus Decorative Side Panels

The best all-around finished solution is often a performance treatment plus a design layer. A vertical cellular shade handles insulation and privacy, while stationary side panels add texture and soften the wall. This keeps daily operation simple and prevents the room from looking bare when the shade is open. Plan $1,200-$4,000+ depending on fabric and shade quality. Put the money into a tight-fitting shade, strong track, and lining before adding decorative trim.

How to Measure Before Ordering

Good measuring starts with the door, not the catalog. Measure the full outside width of the frame or casing, the glass width, the height from finished floor to top casing, and the available wall space on both sides. Measure in at least three places because floors and headers are not always level. A 1/4-inch crown in the floor can make a floor-length panel drag at one end and float at the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write down the door direction. Stand inside the room and note which panel moves and where it parks when open. The treatment stack should usually sit over the fixed panel, not the opening. If the door is a center-opening four-panel unit, plan a split stack so each side clears its own active panel.

Measure handle projection from the face of the trim or glass frame to the farthest point of the handle. Many patio door handles project 2-4 inches. Your bracket, track, or shade must clear that projection with at least 1/2 inch of working room. This is where many inside-mount treatments fail. They look good in the package and then scrape the handle every day.

Check substrate before you order heavy hardware. A light vinyl vertical blind track can often be mounted with standard fasteners into wood trim or framing. A 12-foot ceiling track with lined drapery may carry 20-60 pounds once fabric, lining, carriers, and draw hardware are included. For that, we want screws into framing, solid blocking, or a rated anchor system matched to the ceiling material. When walls are open during a remodel, add 2-by blocking above the door. It is inexpensive then and valuable later.

You can choose different installation methods (wall or ceiling) according to your needs. (1) Inside Mount: Minimum 2.5-inch depth needed; (2) Outside Mount: Minimum 2.25-inches of bracket height required on the top

For drapery width, do not size panels to the exact glass opening. A functional traverse drape generally needs finished fabric width greater than the opening, plus stack room. A common starting point is 1.5 to 2 times fullness for traditional drapes, and 80%-120% fullness for ripple-fold systems depending on the track. For a 72-inch door, the installed track may be 96-120 inches wide if you want the fabric to clear the glass when open.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For height, decide whether you want a ceiling mount, above-trim mount, or trim-level mount. Ceiling mount is clean and makes the room feel taller. Above-trim mount is easier in many homes. Trim-level mount is usually the least forgiving because it can make the door look shorter and may expose light gaps. For high-use doors, hold soft treatments about 1/2 inch above finished floor. For shutters and panel tracks, follow the manufacturer clearance, but still verify the sill and floor are level.

Energy, Privacy, and Glare

Sliding glass doors can be comfort problems because they are large openings. Even a good modern patio door has more heat transfer than an insulated wall. Cellular shades and lined drapes help because they add a still-air layer. The DOE cellular shade research is useful because it gives homeowners a real benchmark: cellular shades can outperform conventional vinyl blinds and, in modeled scenarios, save meaningful heating and cooling energy. When a product is sold as energy efficient, ask for the Attachments Energy Rating Council label or product listing instead of accepting vague claims.

Solar control is different from privacy. A 3% or 5% solar shade can make a TV usable in the afternoon and preserve a view during the day. At night, the brighter side becomes the visible side. If the lights are on inside and it is dark outside, many solar shades allow neighbors to see in. For bedrooms, bathrooms, and street-facing sliders, use blackout shades, privacy-lined drapes, vertical cellular shades, or a layered system.

Color matters. Light-colored exterior-facing surfaces reflect more sun and can reduce heat gain. Darker solar fabrics often preserve a crisper view but absorb more heat. For a west-facing family room, we usually prioritize glare control and thermal performance over the sharpest view. For a shaded patio door facing a private yard, a sheer vertical or 5%-10% solar shade may be enough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large treatments also dominate a room visually. Neutral main panels are usually safer over a 6-foot or 8-foot span. Put pattern in side panels, trim tape, woven texture, or a cornice instead of covering the entire wall with a loud print. The bigger the door, the more disciplined the material choice should be.

Safety, Code, and Permit Notes

Modern cord safety is not optional. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission urges consumers to choose cordless window coverings, and CPSC guidance treats accessible cords as a serious child-strangulation hazard. Federal 16 CFR Part 1260, effective May 30, 2023, establishes safety requirements for operating cords on custom window coverings. In practical terms, specify cordless, wand-control, motorized, inaccessible-cord, or properly restrained continuous-loop systems from reputable manufacturers.

Do not leave loose loops at the side of a door. Continuous-loop chains and cords must be held taut with the correct tension device fastened to the wall or floor using fasteners matched to the surface. If the tension device is not installed, many systems are unsafe and may not operate correctly. Around children, treat any dangling cord or accessible loop as a defect to correct, not a design compromise.

Most surface-mounted blinds, shades, and curtains do not require a building permit. Hardwired motorized treatments may require a licensed electrician and a permit depending on the jurisdiction, voltage, and whether new wiring is run. Exterior solar screens can trigger HOA review or local requirements when mounted on visible elevations. Replacing the patio door unit itself often requires a permit, especially if the opening size changes or structural flashing is disturbed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Patio doors use safety glazing, and nearby glass is regulated as a hazardous location under building codes. Do not drill into glass stops, sash members, or the insulated glass unit. Also be careful with aftermarket films on insulated glass. Some films can increase thermal stress or affect glass warranties. If the door glass is fogged, cracked, poorly tempered, or part of a failed unit, handle the door problem before spending premium money on coverings.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

DIY is reasonable for a standard 72-by-80-inch door when you are installing a basic curtain rod, a simple outside-mount vertical blind, or an in-stock panel track into wood framing. A careful homeowner with a drill, level, tape measure, stud finder, and proper bits can usually complete that kind of install in 1-3 hours. The risk is not the labor time. The risk is ordering the wrong size or mounting into weak material.

Hire a pro when the treatment is custom, heavy, motorized, layered, ceiling-mounted, or wider than about 96 inches. Also hire help when the header is concrete, steel, tile, plaster, or unknown; when the floor is visibly out of level; when the door handle has unusual projection; or when multiple doors in the same room need to align perfectly. Professional measuring is cheap compared with remaking a custom drape or shade.

For remodels, involve the installer before drywall closes. We can add blocking, plan low-voltage routes, coordinate ceiling-track locations with recessed lights, and make sure casing details do not fight the treatment. This is especially important for motorized drapes, ceiling tracks, and sliding shutters. Hardware added after the fact can still work, but it often requires compromise in projection, fastener placement, or finish repair.

A good pro should ask about door direction, handle projection, stack side, pets, children, privacy at night, sun exposure, flooring, and how often the door is used. If the conversation is only about fabric color, the practical part of the job is being missed.

A Practical Recommendation

If the room is used daily, choose a treatment that moves sideways and stacks away from the active door panel. For most living rooms, that means panel tracks, vertical cellular shades, ripple-fold curtains, or better-quality vertical blinds. For bedrooms, add blackout performance. For hot and cold climates, prioritize cellular construction or lined drapery. For a premium remodel, plan blocking and electrical rough-in before finishes are complete.

Our usual Bettesworth Construction advice is simple: spend first on the operating system, then on the fabric. A beautiful panel on a weak rod becomes annoying fast. A plain neutral treatment on a solid track can work well for 10 years. Sliding glass doors are used too often for pretty hardware that barely functions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best window treatment for a sliding glass door used every day?

A side-stack treatment is usually best. Panel tracks, vertical blinds, vertical cellular shades, ripple-fold curtains, and traverse drapes move with the door and can stack on the fixed-panel side.

How much should I budget for sliding glass door window treatments in 2026?

For one standard 72-by-80-inch patio door, budget about $150-$450 for basic vertical blinds, $300-$1,200 for panel tracks, $700-$2,500 for vertical cellular shades, and $800-$3,000+ for custom drapery.

Are solar shades private at night?

Usually not by themselves. Solar shades preserve daytime view and reduce glare, but many become see-through at night when interior lights are on. Pair them with drapes or choose blackout or privacy-lined treatments.

Are corded window treatments still allowed?

Modern products must meet current cord-safety standards, and cordless or inaccessible-cord designs are the safer choice. Continuous-loop systems need properly installed tension devices, especially in homes where children visit or live.

Should sliding glass door curtains touch the floor?

For daily-use doors, leave about 1/2 inch of floor clearance. Puddled drapes collect dust, drag on tracks, and get caught by shoes, pets, and furniture.
