Choose an open porch for the clearest views and an unfiltered outdoor feel. Choose a screened-in porch if insects regularly keep you from using the space and you want a mesh barrier while retaining outdoor air. Screening adds enclosure, but it does not turn a porch into a weatherproof or conditioned room.
How the two porch types compare

What screening does—and does not—do
It creates an insect barrier, not a glass wall
Screening puts mesh between the porch and the outdoors while preserving an open-air character. The 2018 International Residential Code’s model-code appendix recognizes insect screening as an enclosure material and treats screen enclosures as nonhabitable spaces. A screen enclosure is therefore not the same as a glazed, conditioned room.
It can affect airflow and shade
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Solution Center says a screened-in porch can provide shade, protect windows from rain, and allow more airflow through windows than window screens alone. That guidance concerns the house windows and airflow through them; it is not a promise that people or furniture on the porch will stay dry. Mesh adds resistance compared with fully open sides, but the amount varies with the screen and porch design.
Decide based on how you will use the porch
- Choose open sides if unobstructed views and the strongest sense of openness matter more than an insect barrier.
- Choose screens if insects regularly prevent you from enjoying the porch and you want to retain outdoor air.
- Consider timing and location: think about the seasons and times of day you expect to use the space, and whether insects are actually a problem then.
- Consider the existing structure: a new build and a conversion of an existing porch may involve different work. Compare bids for the same size, roof, structure, finishes and site conditions.
Compare the full project scope, not a generic price premium
Screening adds materials and work, including panels, framing or stops, and typically a screen door. But the roof, supporting structure, flooring, rails and existing conditions can have a greater effect on the overall project. There is no current, broadly applicable price premium established for choosing screened over open. Ask local contractors for comparable bids that hold the porch size, roof, structure, finishes and site conditions constant.

Check code, permits and historic review before building
The 2018 IRC Appendix H is a model-code reference, not a guarantee of what applies at your address. Jurisdictions adopt codes and amendments on their own schedules, so check the locally adopted code and permit requirements before building or enclosing a porch. Ask specifically about screen-enclosure provisions and any egress implications.
For a historic property, the National Park Service advises that “in most cases, a historic open porch should not be enclosed.” Its guidance explains that openness may be part of the building’s historic character and recommends retaining significant features if enclosure is considered. Removable screen frames can be a repairable approach, but historic-district review may still apply.

Plan for screen upkeep if you choose enclosure
Screen panels can need cleaning and repair depending on material and exposure. For a repair or replacement, check the opening dimensions, frame type and material compatibility before buying screening or a replacement kit, and confirm any applicable product or local code requirements.
