Optimizing Home Remote Controls with MPS Products

Designing an IR or RF home remote requires coordinated choices for power conversion, charging, supervision, displays, radios and motorized loads. This guide maps MPS examples to those functions and shows how to compare them against real battery and system requirements.

Optimizing an infrared (IR) or radio-frequency (RF) home remote is a system-design exercise, not a matter of adding one “better” chip. The control interface, MCU, radio or IR transmitter, display, battery, charger, voltage rails, supervision, and any motorized load must work within the same power and reliability budget. Monolithic Power Systems (MPS) presents component options for each of those functions, but the correct choice depends on your measured load profile, battery chemistry, electrical limits, and enclosure.

What an MPS-based remote-control design must solve

Home remotes can operate televisions, sound systems, lighting, fans, curtains, and other equipment. IR designs need a controlled optical transmitter and suitable logic supply; RF designs add a radio, antenna, and often a higher or more variable transmit-current demand. A design may also include an LCD, rechargeable cell, charging input, or a motorized function.

MPS groups relevant products into motor drivers, LED backlight drivers, supervisory circuits, AC/DC converters, battery chargers, step-down converters, step-up converters, LDOs, and PMICs. These are design categories, not a recipe requiring every category in one product.

Match each circuit function to the component category

Design function MPS example cited in its application material What it does in a remote or control Selection checks
Motor control MP6539 A three-phase BLDC gate-driver example for loads such as fans or curtains; a motor driver translates control signals into motor power and can support speed, direction, or position control. Motor topology, voltage and current, commutation method, thermal behavior, fault handling, and mechanical load.
LCD backlighting MP3318 Supplies and regulates an LCD backlight, with programmable dimming and protective features described by MPS. LED string arrangement, required current and voltage, dimming method, brightness range, and display noise constraints.
Supply supervision MP6400 family Monitors supply rails and provides reset behavior so an MCU can return to a defined state after a brownout or other supply fault. Reset threshold, delay, monitored rail, tolerance, startup behavior, and interaction with the MCU reset input.
AC-derived power HFG610-65 A flyback-regulator example for an AC/DC supply in a control product. Input range, isolation and safety requirements, output power, standby consumption, transformer design, and regulatory qualification.
Single-cell charging MP2615D A one-cell lithium-ion/lithium-polymer charger example for a rechargeable remote or control. Cell chemistry, charge current, termination, temperature monitoring, protection strategy, adapter limits, and enclosure heat.
Step-down conversion MP8886 Converts a higher input rail to a lower system rail; MPS describes digital configuration and protection features. Input and output ranges, load current, efficiency over the duty cycle, switching noise, configuration interface, and transient response.
Step-up conversion MP3416 Raises a low battery voltage for a load that needs a higher rail. Input headroom, required output voltage/current, light-load behavior, startup, inductor and capacitor requirements, and protection.
Low-noise regulation MP2015A An LDO example for a linear regulated rail where a relatively clean output is useful. Dropout voltage, load current, dissipation, noise, PSRR, stability capacitors, and battery-run time.
Multiple rails and sequencing MP5416 A PMIC example integrating multiple rails and sequencing or control functions to reduce board area and component count. Number and type of rails, sequencing dependencies, configuration, thermal limits, fault behavior, and serviceability.

Power-conversion decisions that affect battery life

Use a boost converter only when the load requires a higher rail

MPS cites the MP3416 as operating from an input as low as 0.86V and providing a 1.8V to 5.5V output range. Those figures are manufacturer-stated example specifications from the application material; verify the current datasheet, operating conditions, output-current capability, and component requirements before using them in a design. Its light-load pulse-skip behavior can be relevant to a remote that spends most of its time in standby, but the resulting ripple and transient response must be checked against the MCU, display, and radio.

Choose a buck, LDO, or PMIC around the real rail map

A step-down converter is appropriate when the source rail is above the required system voltage. An LDO can be simpler and comparatively quiet, but its voltage difference becomes heat and wasted battery energy. A PMIC can consolidate rails and sequencing, reducing board area and external parts, while increasing configuration and integration dependencies. Compare efficiency at the loads the remote actually spends time in—not only at the headline operating point.

Measure standby, wake, and transmit states separately

Quiescent current, light-load behavior, conversion efficiency, wake-up time, and peak current all matter. A remote may spend long periods asleep, wake briefly for a key press, and then draw a substantially different current while driving an IR LED, LCD backlight, motor, or RF transmitter. Size rails, capacitors, and protection for those transitions rather than for an average current alone.

Charging and supervision are reliability functions

For a rechargeable design, the charger must match the cell chemistry and charging profile. A one-cell lithium-ion/lithium-polymer charger such as the MP2615D is only an example; validate charge current, termination, battery-temperature handling, adapter behavior, and protection in the complete enclosure. Charging safety cannot be inferred from the part category alone.

A supervisory circuit such as the MP6400 family can hold the MCU in reset until a rail is valid and can respond to a brownout. Set thresholds and reset delays around the MCU’s guaranteed operating range and the converter’s startup and fault behavior. A reset monitor does not replace firmware recovery, battery protection, or validation of every rail that can corrupt system state.

How to compare candidate parts

  1. Define the architecture: record IR or RF operation, MCU and radio rails, display and backlight, motor or other load, battery chemistry, charging source, and required standby and active states.
  2. Write electrical limits: specify input-voltage range, each output voltage and current, startup and transient requirements, allowable ripple, temperature range, and fault conditions.
  3. Calculate the energy budget: estimate quiescent draw, sleep duty cycle, key-press duration, display duty cycle, backlight use, RF transmit time, motor operation, and charging losses.
  4. Screen protection and control features: compare overcurrent, thermal, undervoltage, battery-temperature, short-circuit, reset, sequencing, and configuration behavior.
  5. Check implementation cost: review package, thermal path, inductor and capacitor requirements, external component count, PCB area, antenna or display constraints, and assembly capability.
  6. Validate the complete product: test cold and hot batteries, end-of-discharge voltage, repeated key presses, simultaneous display and radio activity, brownouts, charger faults, motor stalls, and standby leakage.

What MPS’s material does—and does not—establish

MPS’s article “Optimizing Home Remote Controls with MPS Products” is vendor-authored application material identified in the accompanying PDF as Article #BAI-0001 Rev. 1.0, dated March 12, 2025. It explains intended design roles and names product examples; it does not provide independent comparative testing, a universal ranking, or a measured battery-life improvement for a finished remote.

MPS concludes that “By providing smooth control, responsiveness, and integration, MPS products can optimize remote home control throughout most of the application.” That is the manufacturer’s positioning, not an independently verified performance result. Confirm part status and electrical limits in current datasheets and run your own system-level qualification before committing to production.
