Our picks
Best overall: Weber Rapidfire Chimney Starter
The Weber Rapidfire is the easiest recommendation when you want a standard-size chimney that is widely suited to kettle grills and ordinary charcoal loads. Weber lists a 1.6-gallon capacity holding approximately 5.7 pounds of standard briquettes. Its cone-shaped bottom grate exposes more charcoal to the ignition source, while the aluminized-steel body is designed for high heat.
Handling is a major reason to choose it. A side handle and flip-up helper handle let you support the chimney with two hands while pouring, and a heat shield helps separate your hand from the hot metal. Weber recommends wearing gloves. The US product page listed the model at $24.99 when accessed September 30, 2026; prices can change.
#1 Best Overall
- FAST CHARCOAL LIGHTER PULLS STEADY AIRFLOW FOR EVEN IGNITION: Helps get briquettes lit quickly and more evenly by pulling steady airflow through the chimney, reducing time from lighting to cooking for grills, smokers, and kettles.
- HEAT SHIELD AND STAY-COOL HANDLE FOR SAFER LIGHTING AND POURING: Built with a heat shield and stay-cool handle to help protect hands during lighting and pouring, supporting steadier control when moving hot coals into a grill.
- LARGE CAPACITY FOR FAMILY COOKOUTS TAILGATES AND CAMPING MEALS: Designed to hold a generous load of charcoal for family cookouts, tailgates, and camping meals, making it easier to light enough fuel for bigger grills and longer cooks.
- DURABLE RUST-RESISTANT ZINC-COATED STEEL FOR REPEATED OUTDOOR USE: Made from rust-resistant zinc-coated steel for repeated outdoor use, helping the chimney withstand high heat cycles and frequent lighting sessions through the grilling season.
- VENTED BASE AND CIRCULAR AIR VENTS FOR CONSISTENT AIRFLOW: Features a vented base and circular air vents that encourage consistent airflow, helping paper or fire starters ignite charcoal and support more uniform burn before cooking.
Best large-capacity option: Oklahoma Joe’s Halftime XL
Oklahoma Joe’s Halftime XL is for cooks who regularly fill an oversized grill, offset smoker or other cooker that needs more than a standard chimney can carry. The maker says it holds up to 100 briquettes and heats up twice as fast as standard chimney starters. That speed figure is a manufacturer claim, not an independent comparative measurement.
Its larger capacity can save repeated batches, but it also means a heavier, hotter load to control. Make sure your grill has room to receive the full charge and that you have heat-resistant gloves and a stable landing surface before lighting it.
Best for quick release: Char-Griller Chimney Starter with Quick Release Trigger
Char-Griller’s model targets a specific annoyance: releasing hot coals without wrestling with the chimney. The quick-release trigger is the central convenience feature, making it appealing when you value a fast pour and simpler handling over a published capacity figure.

How a charcoal chimney starter works
A chimney is a hollow metal cylinder with ventilation holes, an internal wire grate and a handle. Charcoal sits above the grate; paper or a fire starter burns below it. Air enters through the lower vents, hot gases rise through the charcoal and the coals ignite from the bottom upward. Once the upper briquettes are covered with gray ash, the load is ready to pour.
Because the fire starter is below the charcoal, lighter fluid is unnecessary. That avoids adding liquid fuel to the coals and eliminates the need to wait for lighter-fluid fumes to burn off.

How to use one safely
- Prepare the grill area. Open the grill’s vents as appropriate, clear flammable items and choose a stable, heat-safe spot for the chimney.
- Load the charcoal. Put briquettes or lump charcoal above the internal grate. Do not exceed the chimney’s intended fill level; the Weber capacity, for example, is specified for approximately 5.7 pounds of standard briquettes.
- Add the ignition material. Place crumpled newspaper, a used paper bag or a purpose-made lighter cube beneath the grate. Keep the material positioned so air can still enter the vents.
- Light from below. Ignite the paper or fire starter through the lower openings. Rising heat and airflow will spread the fire upward.
- Wait for the coals to be ready. Pour when the charcoal is substantially lit and the upper pieces show a coating of gray ash. Avoid carrying a chimney full of actively flaming charcoal farther than necessary.
- Pour with protection. Put on heat-resistant gloves, grip the main and helper handles where provided, keep your face and exposed skin away from the opening, and pour onto a stable charcoal arrangement.
- Set the empty chimney down safely. The metal remains hot after the pour. Leave it where children, pets and combustible surfaces cannot contact it until completely cool.
Newspaper, lighter cubes or lighter fluid?
Newspaper and paper bags
Newspaper can work and is specifically listed in Kingsford’s instructions, as are used paper bags. Use dry paper, crumple it loosely enough to preserve airflow and expect it to burn quickly. Glossy, heavily coated or damp paper is a poor choice because it may not establish a reliable flame.

Purpose-made lighter cubes and fire starters
Lighter cubes provide a more predictable burn than a small amount of paper and are easy to position beneath the grate. They are a compatible consumable for any of the four chimney designs. Follow the fire-starter package directions and keep unused cubes away from heat.
Lighter fluid
A chimney starter is intended to make lighter fluid unnecessary. Adding fluid to a chimney can create excessive flames, unpleasant odors and a risk of flare-up while you are handling the hot cylinder. Use the chimney’s lower ignition area instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to look for when choosing a chimney
- Capacity: Standard models suit typical kettle-grill loads; an XL model makes more sense when you routinely cook for a crowd or fill a large smoker.
- Pouring control: A heat shield and second handle improve leverage and keep your hand farther from the hot body.
- Airflow and grate shape: Ventilation openings and a well-positioned grate determine how readily heat reaches the charcoal. Weber’s cone-shaped grate is designed to expose more coal surface to the flame.
- Construction: Steel and aluminum both conduct substantial heat. Inspect the handle attachment and body for warping or corrosion over time.
- Storage and portability: A larger chimney carries more charcoal but takes more room and becomes heavier when full.
- Ignition routine: Decide whether you prefer paper that is already on hand or purpose-made fire starters with a more consistent burn.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are charcoal chimney starters safer than lighter fluid?
They avoid the need to add liquid fuel to the charcoal. Use the chimney on a stable, heat-safe surface, wear heat-resistant gloves and keep the hot cylinder away from people and combustible materials.
Do I need lighter cubes, or can I use newspaper?
Both work when positioned beneath the grate with adequate airflow. Kingsford’s instructions list newspaper, used paper bags and purpose-made fire starters; cubes generally provide a more consistent burn.
Which chimney starter holds the most charcoal?
Oklahoma Joe’s Halftime XL has the largest stated capacity in this comparison: up to 100 briquettes, according to Oklahoma Joe’s. Weber lists approximately 5.7 pounds of standard briquettes for the Rapidfire.
