A successful bathroom renovation starts with measured existing conditions and a fixture layout checked against practical clearances and locally adopted requirements. Plan the shower or tub’s complete water-management assembly, confirm that exhaust air reaches outdoors, then choose compatible finishes for water exposure, upkeep, and repair.
Plan the renovation in sequence
- Document the room. Measure finished dimensions and note doors, drawers, plumbing locations, existing damage, and how people will move through the space.
- Test the layout. Check fixture spacing, door swings, shower entry, storage, and circulation. Verify applicable local code and accessibility requirements before finalizing locations.
- Plan water management. Specify compatible backing, joints, penetrations, pan, and drainage details for the selected shower or tub system.
- Plan ventilation. Check that the fan moves sufficient air and that its exhaust duct terminates outdoors.
- Choose finishes. Compare water resistance, slip characteristics where relevant, maintenance, repairability, installation complexity, and compatibility with the underlying assembly.
Plan layout around clearances and local code
Measure the room, including door and drawer swings, vanity depth, shower entry, and likely user movement. A layout can look workable on paper but feel cramped when fixtures and storage are in use.
The 2021 International Residential Code (IRC) refers fixture spacing to Figure R307.1 and plumbing provisions. These are model-code examples, not automatically the rules for every location. Confirm the locally adopted code edition, amendments, and any applicable accessibility requirements before finalizing a plan.
Consider whether existing plumbing locations are worth keeping. Relocating plumbing may involve opening floors or walls, changes to framing or venting, and permits or inspections; confirm project requirements with the local building department and qualified professionals.

Plan storage early. Recessed medicine cabinets, vanity drawers, niches, shelves, and linen space can reduce clutter when they are considered alongside the layout and wall assembly.
Treat waterproofing as a complete assembly
Tile is not the waterproofing system by itself. A shower or tub assembly depends on compatible backing and water-management details at joints, corners, penetrations, pans, and drains. Product instructions and appropriate details vary by system, so do not assume one installation method applies to every project.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s guidance on tub and shower assemblies illustrates details such as treating board joints and keeping shower-pan weep holes clear of grout. Follow the instructions for the selected system and ensure drainage components remain functional.

When removing an existing tub or shower, inspect exposed cavities for water damage or mold and address the underlying cause before rebuilding. The DOE’s older Building America guidance gives specific advice for an exterior-wall application; the appropriate assembly depends on project conditions, materials, climate, and current manufacturer instructions.
The 2021 IRC says that specified tub and shower floors and walls must have a nonabsorbent finish. For the specified wall surfaces, it gives a minimum height of six feet (1829 mm) above the floor. This is a model-code example from Section R307.2; verify local adoption and amendments rather than treating it as a universal requirement.
Check ventilation and moisture control
A fan that runs is not necessarily moving enough air. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises checking fan operation during renovation and making sure exhaust goes directly outdoors—not into an attic or another interior space.

- Versatile Applications: this complete waterproof sealing kit is ideal for use in shower rooms, bathtubs, steam rooms, or other spaces such as kitchen sinks and balcony corners, or ceramic floors, preventing cracking and significantly reducing room dampness
Moisture that is not removed can contribute to mold and mildew. Use a suitable exhaust fan and confirm its airflow and duct route. The 2021 IRC also addresses bathroom exhaust discharge outdoors, but local adoption and amendments determine what requirements apply to a particular project.
Where walls are opened, consider air sealing as part of the broader moisture-control plan. Ventilation is one part of controlling moisture, not a substitute for sound water-management details.

| Decision factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Water exposure | Whether the finish suits its location and limits water reaching the underlying floor or structure. |
| Slip and drainage | For floors, consider slip characteristics and how the surface works with the required slope and drainage. |
| Cleaning and maintenance | Consider grout or joints, cleaning needs, and the upkeep the household is willing to do. |
| Repairability and cost | Compare repair options, installation complexity, and whole-project cost for the chosen materials and assembly. |
| Compatibility | Check the relationship between substrate, backing, waterproofing, finish, and installation instructions. |
The EPA recommends water-resistant flooring that limits water reaching the floor below and advises against carpet near tubs, showers, sinks, and toilets. The 2021 IRC specifies nonabsorbent finishes for certain tub and shower surfaces; those model-code provisions do not rank one finish material above another.
FAQs
How do I waterproof a shower?
Treat it as a complete, compatible assembly: backing, joints, penetrations, pan, and drainage all matter. Follow the selected system’s instructions and keep drainage details, including pan weep holes where present, clear and functional.
How much space do I need around a toilet?
Check the fixture-spacing requirements in the code adopted by your jurisdiction and assess practical circulation in the measured room. The 2021 IRC points to Figure R307.1 and plumbing provisions; confirm which edition and amendments apply locally rather than relying on a universal number.

EPA guidance says bathroom exhaust should go directly outdoors, not into an attic or another interior space. Confirm that the fan moves sufficient air; a running motor alone does not prove adequate exhaust.
What flooring is best for a bathroom?
Choose flooring suited to water exposure that limits water reaching the underlying floor. Compare slip characteristics, drainage, cleaning, repairability, cost, and compatibility with the substrate and waterproofing; the reviewed guidance does not establish one universally best material.
