Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLet the wax harden, lift the solid pieces with a dull or plastic edge, then remove the remaining grease or dye with a cleaner suited to the surface. On washable fabric, carpet and upholstery, transfer softened wax into absorbent paper with controlled warmth—never a hot iron directly on the wax. Read the care label or finish instructions first, and test every cleaner in an inconspicuous spot.
A safe wax-removal sequence
- Identify the surface. Check a textile care label and consider whether the finish is porous, painted, heat-sensitive or scratch-prone before using heat, alcohol, bleach, mineral spirits, naphtha or another solvent. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension says to read the care label before trying any stain-removal method.
- Harden the spill. Allow fresh wax to cool. On many hard surfaces, place an ice cube in a plastic bag against the wax until it becomes brittle.
- Lift, do not grind. Slide off the wax with a spoon, plastic card, plastic scraper or dull spatula. Avoid metal edges wherever they could scratch a finish.
- Transfer remaining wax where appropriate. On washable fabric, carpet and upholstery, cover the residue with folded absorbent paper and apply controlled warmth. Keep an iron warm rather than hot, move it continuously and replace saturated paper sections.
- Treat the mark left behind. Oily film and candle dye are separate stains. Apply a compatible fabric, carpet or upholstery stain remover, following its directions and a hidden-area test.
- Stop when the material is at risk. Delicate fabric, unknown finishes, extensive spills and persistent discoloration are appropriate jobs for a professional cleaner.
Clothing and washable textiles
Remove the hardened wax
Gently scrape away the raised wax with a dull knife, spoon or plastic scraper. Do not pull fibers or use a sharp blade.
Use paper and controlled heat
Put folded absorbent paper over the remaining spot. Warm an iron to a setting allowed by the care label and briefly pass it over the paper so the wax transfers. Keep the iron moving, never place it directly on wax, and use clean paper as it becomes saturated. Synthetic fibers can melt or distort if overheated.
Wash the residual grease or dye
After the wax is gone, launder according to the label or use a suitable stain remover. Pretest first. Do not use alcohol on acetate, triacetate, modacrylic or acrylic unless the product directions specifically allow it. See the Clorox fabric-wax guidance and UGA procedure for label- and fiber-specific cautions.

Carpet and upholstery
Lift the solid spill
Harden soft wax, then scrape gently with a plastic edge. Work from the outside toward the center to avoid spreading it.
Transfer what remains
Cover the spot with absorbent paper and use controlled warmth, keeping the heat appropriate for the carpet or upholstery fiber. Replace paper frequently. Avoid overheating synthetic carpet.

Clean the oily or colored residue
Use a product labeled for the specific carpet or upholstery, apply sparingly and blot rather than scrub. Solvent-based products can damage backing or foam when overwet; ventilate, wear suitable gloves and keep flammable solvents away from flames. The Carpet and Rug Institute warns that spot removers can cause color transfer or fiber damage, so test an inconspicuous area first. Its guidance notes that stubborn spills may require professional cleaning.
Wood and painted wood
Use an ice-filled plastic bag to make the wax brittle, then lift it with a plastic scraper or dull edge held nearly parallel to the surface. Never gouge a finish with a metal blade. If a film remains, mineral spirits or naphtha may be suitable for some finishes, but only after checking the finish instructions, ventilating and testing a hidden area. Use the smallest amount possible and do not soak joints or unfinished wood. Once residue is removed from finished wood, buff gently with a chamois cloth. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension provides this finish-dependent approach.

Glass, ceramic, tile, grout, stone, metal, plastic, vinyl and painted walls
Cool or ice the wax, then lift it with a dull plastic edge. Metal scraping can scratch glass, tile glaze, plastic, vinyl, painted walls and some stone finishes. Wipe the remaining film with a compatible detergent or washing-soda solution, rinse where the material allows, and dry completely. Test cleaners on an inconspicuous area first; porous stone and grout can absorb colored dye. Surface-specific guidance is available from UGA and Martha Stewart.
Delicate fabrics and specialty finishes
Silk and other delicate textiles can watermark, scorch or lose dye during home treatment. Martha Stewart identifies professional dry cleaning as the safest route for silk. Use the same cautious approach for vintage fabric, upholstery with an unknown finish, wax on leather, or any surface whose care instructions prohibit heat or solvents.

Choose the method by surface risk
| Surface | First action | Residue treatment | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Washable fabric | Scrape, then paper-and-controlled warmth | Launder or compatible textile stain remover | Scorching, melting fibers, dye spread |
| Carpet or upholstery | Scrape, then paper-and-controlled warmth | Product labeled for the fiber; blot | Overwetting, backing/foam damage, color transfer |
| Finished wood | Ice and plastic/dull edge | Finish-approved solvent only; chamois buff | Scratches and solvent damage |
| Glass, tile, plastic, vinyl, painted wall | Ice and plastic/dull edge | Compatible detergent or washing soda; rinse if suitable | Scratching, dulling or paint removal |
| Silk or unknown delicate finish | Stop and consult a professional | Professional treatment | Permanent fiber or finish damage |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not put a hot iron directly on wax or leave heat in one place.
- Do not scrape finished wood, glass, tile, paint or plastic with a metal blade.
- Do not skip the hidden-area test, even when a product is marketed for the material.
- Do not saturate carpet or upholstery with solvent or water.
- Do not assume the job is finished when the solid wax disappears; grease and candle dye need separate treatment.
When to call a professional
Arrange professional cleaning when the item is silk or otherwise delicate, the finish is unknown, the spill is large, color has migrated, or a tested home method leaves a persistent oily or colored mark. A professional can select a solvent and extraction method without exposing backing, foam, fibers or finishes to unnecessary heat or moisture.
