Decorative wood veneer thickness varies by product and market: a 2013 technical manual reports 0.6 mm nominal in Australia, 0.7–0.9 mm generally in North America, and 0.3–0.7 mm generally in Europe and Asia. Those are regional market conventions, not specifications for every veneer product. Check the product listing for its stated thickness and whether it describes loose veneer or a veneer-faced panel.
Typical decorative veneer thickness by market
A 2013 technical manual from Forest and Wood Products Australia gives these general regional figures for decorative wood veneer:

These figures describe conventions reported in that manual, not a universal rule or a guarantee about current stock. A particular sheet or panel can differ, so use the manufacturer’s specification when planning a project.
What ISO 13608:2014 covers
ISO 13608:2014 applies to decorative veneered plywood with a natural, coloured, laminated, multilaminar, or other decorative veneer surface where the surface veneer is less than 0.55 mm thick. The International Organization for Standardization lists the standard as current after review and confirmation in 2025. This is the scope of that standard—not a requirement that all veneer be thinner than 0.55 mm. Read the ISO 13608:2014 scope.

Why plywood face veneer figures may differ
Veneer-faced plywood is not the same product context as a loose decorative veneer sheet. In a 2018 report examining historical U.S. hardwood plywood shipments, the U.S. International Trade Commission reported that slightly more than half of domestic producers’ commercial shipments had face veneer at least 0.6 mm thick. That finding describes the shipments and period examined; it is not a current market share or a universal thickness specification. See the USITC report.
What to check before buying veneer
For construction, repair, or a finish project, compare like with like: identify whether the product is loose veneer, veneer-faced plywood, or another veneer product, then confirm its actual stated thickness. Regional norms and a standard’s scope are useful context, but neither substitutes for the product specification.

- Check the stated thickness on the listing or technical data sheet.
- Confirm whether it is loose wood veneer or a panel with a veneer face and core.
- For loose sheets, check the wood species, sheet dimensions, and backing as well as thickness.
- If the seller claims conformity to a market convention or standard, confirm which one and what product it applies to.
When sourcing wood veneer sheets, inspect those listing details rather than assuming that a regional range applies to every product.
