This can help a plant set seed without pollen from another plant, but it does not guarantee fruit: pollen must reach a receptive stigma, the plant must be compatible with its own pollen, and fruiting requirements vary by species and variety.
What is self-pollination?
Pollination is the transfer of pollen from an anther, where it is produced, to a stigma, where it can be received. Penn State Extension’s guide to pollination and pollinators describes these structures as parts of the flower’s reproductive system.
Botanists distinguish two kinds of self-pollination:
- Autogamy: pollen moves from an anther to the stigma of the same flower.
- Geitonogamy: pollen moves from one flower to another flower on the same plant. Because the pollen comes from the same individual plant, gardening guides often group this with self-pollination.
A bisexual (or hermaphroditic) flower has both male and female reproductive organs in the same flower. That arrangement can make self-pollination possible, but it does not prove that the plant is self-compatible or will reliably produce fruit. University of Minnesota Libraries Publishing’s overview of flower morphology explains flower structures; Tamil Nadu Agricultural University’s discussion of pollination modes addresses how pollen is transferred.

How does pollen reach the stigma?
In open flowers
Anthers release pollen, and the stigma must be receptive when the pollen arrives. In an open flower, self-pollination is more likely when pollen release and stigma receptivity overlap and the anthers and stigma are positioned close enough for pollen to move between them. If timing or placement does not work, pollen may not fertilize the ovules; pollen from another flower may be needed instead. SATHEE’s NCERT-derived chapter on sexual reproduction in flowering plants describes these mechanisms.
In closed flowers
Some flowers use cleistogamy: they never open, and pollen is released within the closed flower, close to the stigma. This arrangement secures self-pollination. SATHEE names pansies (Viola), Oxalis, and Commelina among plants that can produce both closed cleistogamous flowers and open flowers.

By contrast, chasmogamous flowers open at maturity and expose their reproductive parts, allowing pollen exchange. Some plants produce both flower types. In grasses, for example, closed cleistogamous flowers may follow open flowers that can be pollinated by other plants, according to University of Illinois Extension’s explanation of grass pollination.
Do self-pollinating plants need pollinators?
Not necessarily, but the label does not mean insects or wind can never matter. Peas, beans, lettuce, and tomatoes are among the crops that can fertilize themselves, according to University of Florida IFAS Extension’s guide to producing and saving open-pollinated seeds. Slight vibration from wind or an insect can help move pollen within a flower. UF/IFAS also notes that large bees may pry cowpea flowers open or bite into them, making cross-pollination possible.

- Long Bloom Window: Strawflower mix delivers red, orange, pink, and white blooms late summer through early fall; harvest and dry for paper daisy crafts or bouquet flower seeds to enjoy color all year.
- Easy Sowing Options: Surface sow helichrysum bracteatum seeds indoors 6 weeks before last frost or direct early spring; ensure ~18" spacing; plants self-seed, providing bulk flower seeds for next season.
- Versatile Floral Value: Petals hold color after drying, so straw flower seeds for planting create everlasting wreaths, dried strawflowers in jars, and live displays grown from tall flower seeds.
- Drought and Heat Tolerant: 30" tall everlasting flower endures poor soil & blazing sun, brightening pollinator garden borders or pots with straw flowers perfect for fresh & dried bouquets.
- Sprouting: Fresh strawflower seeds germinate in 8-10 days at 70–75 °F, giving quick results from helichrysum seeds for planting flowers or start indoors. USDA zones 1-12.
So the practical answer depends on the plant and the outcome you want. Self-pollination may allow seed or fruit production without pollen arriving from a different plant, while pollinator activity can still affect pollen movement or introduce pollen from elsewhere.

Pollination and successful fruiting are not the same promise. A plant may have both reproductive organs and still be unable to produce a normal crop with its own pollen. Compatibility and fruit-set requirements vary by species and variety.

University of Illinois Extension’s guide to fruitfulness and pollination says most peach, nectarine, and sour cherry varieties are self-fruitful. Some apples, including ‘Jonathan’ in its example, need pollen from a different variety to produce a normal crop. Check the specific crop and variety rather than assuming all plants with similar names have the same requirements.
Why plants self-pollinate—and what they give up
Self-pollination can provide reproductive assurance when a compatible mate or pollinator is unavailable. Cleistogamous flowers, in particular, can secure seed set without pollinators. The trade-off is that selfing reduces the mixing of genes that occurs with cross-fertilisation. Cross-fertilisation creates opportunities for genetic variation, which can be beneficial for resilience to environmental conditions or disease, as the Royal Horticultural Society’s overview of plant reproduction explains. These are possible advantages and trade-offs, not outcomes guaranteed for every species.
