What the free plan includes
WOOD Magazine’s plan page, updated February 27, 2025, describes a modular arrangement: a pair of bookcases, cabinet bases, and a window seat between them. It also covers planning, construction, installation, and crown molding. The layout can be adapted rather than treated as one fixed wall of furniture.
- Keep the window seat: Use the central seat when the room has a window and you want a place to sit or store items.
- Omit the seat: The page says the arrangement can be used without the seat for a fireplace installation.
- Change the storage: The page also describes lengthening the shelving units and omitting the base cabinet.
Open the linked download before planning cuts. The landing page does not expose the full dimensioned drawings or cut list, so it does not establish exact module dimensions, board sizes, or lumber quantities.
Plan the layout around the room
Measure the intended installation area before choosing module widths or ordering stock. Record the available height, width, and depth, plus the length of the wall or alcove. Include baseboards, crown molding, uneven floors, and any window or fireplace clearances in the plan. The Home Depot’s April 16, 2026 guide recommends measuring the project area’s height, width, depth, and length as the first step.

- Check whether the bookcase can be moved into the room and raised upright. A deep unit may need more ceiling clearance to tilt into place; The Home Depot guide uses a 12-inch-deep shelf arrangement as its example and notes that deeper shelves may need more than an inch of additional ceiling clearance. That is example guidance, not a dimension for the WOOD plan.
- Decide where cabinet doors, drawers, or open shelves will be most useful, and keep them clear of nearby trim and furniture.
- Allow for the floor’s variation. Shims can help level the case during installation, while trim can cover small gaps at the floor, wall, or ceiling.
- Confirm that the chosen layout leaves enough usable clearance around the window or fireplace.
Choose materials and shelf positions
Use the downloaded plan’s specifications as the basis for the build, then select materials suited to the room and finish. The Home Depot guide describes its own example as using 1×12 pine; it also discusses plywood and recommends hardwood-veneer plywood with a matching solid-hardwood face frame for a stained look. It presents plywood as a less expensive alternative to building the entire project from solid hardwood. These are options from that separate guide, not a verified material list for WOOD Magazine’s plan.

Another six-shelf plan from CutListCalc describes fixed shelves in dadoes as more rigid and pin-supported shelves as more flexible. That is comparison guidance for a separate design, not an engineering specification for the WOOD plan. Likewise, other projects have different cut lists: Kreg’s separate listings describe a built-in bookshelf with 1×12 boards, 1/4-inch plywood backing, hinges, handles, and shelf pins, and a freestanding bookcase made from 3/4-inch plywood with 1/4-inch backing. Do not transfer those materials or dimensions to this project.

Build, square, and install the bookcases
Follow the downloaded plan for joinery, sequence, and dimensions. As general project guidance, The Home Depot recommends checking the case for square by comparing its diagonals while it lies face-down, then attaching the back. A back panel and face frame can help stiffen shelving and reduce sagging, but use the plan’s details rather than assuming another project’s construction method applies.
- Dry-fit and assemble to the plan. Verify each component against the downloaded drawing and mark the intended position of fixed or adjustable shelves.
- Check for square before fastening the back. Compare the two diagonal measurements; adjust the case until they match, then attach the back as directed.
- Locate wall studs before raising the unit. Mark stud positions where the tall case will be anchored.
- Position and level the case. Use shims as needed to account for floor variation and check that the unit is plumb and level.
- Anchor the case to the wall. Fasten it into a stud with appropriate hardware for the installation. A tall bookcase carrying books should be secured against tipping.
Fit trim and finish the installation
Position the cases before fitting final trim so it can respond to the actual wall, ceiling, and floor. The WOOD plan page includes crown molding; whether you use it or a simpler top termination, measure and fit trim after the main units are set. Fill fastener holes, sand surfaces, caulk appropriate wall or trim joints, then paint or stain according to the finish and material you selected.
