There is no dependable number of hours that applies to every cut flower. The time before flowers wilt depends on the flower and its surroundings: heat and dry handling increase water loss, while cool conditions help. Put stems in clean water as soon as you can.
Why there is no universal time limit
Cut flowers continue to lose water after they are removed from a water source. When water loss outpaces uptake, stems and blooms can become limp. The speed varies with the flowers and the conditions, so a single safe window—such as a set number of hours—would be misleading. Extension guidance does not establish a species-independent limit.
Heat makes dry handling riskier: a warm, sunny room or hot car is less favorable than cool handling. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach advises getting cut stems into water quickly: “The faster the stems are hydrated, the longer they will last.” Iowa State Extension’s cut-flower care guidance was last reviewed in January 2025.
What to do when you get the flowers
- Get them into water promptly. Use a clean vase or container and clean water; do not leave the bouquet dry while you prepare an elaborate arrangement.
- Keep them cool. Avoid direct sun, hot rooms, and hot vehicles. Cool handling slows water loss, but do not expose flowers to freezing temperatures.
- Use flower food only as directed. Commercial floral preservative can help keep vase water clean and supply carbohydrates. Follow the packet directions. If you do not have flower food, clean water is preferable to improvised household mixtures, according to Iowa State Extension. Oklahoma State University Extension also addresses commercial preservatives in cut-flower handling.
If the flowers have wilted
Wilting does not always mean the bouquet is beyond help. With a clean, sharp tool, recut the stem ends and place the stems in clean water or a suitable rehydration solution in a cool location. The UMass Extension guide, updated November 15, 2016, says most flowers will often recover after recutting and rehydrating; its home-care guidance says recovery often takes an hour or two. That is not a guarantee: severely stressed or damaged flowers may not recover fully.

How to judge your situation
- Flowers still firm and cool: Put them in water promptly and keep them out of heat.
- Flowers limp after warm, dry handling: Recut the stems and rehydrate them; check whether they regain firmness rather than assuming a precise deadline.
- Planning transport or an event: Minimize time without water, keep the bouquet cool, and avoid leaving it in a parked car or direct sun. The cited guidance does not provide a reliable dry-time allowance by flower type.
