Before planting, check local invasive-plant guidance and winter conditions: lantana’s hardiness and environmental suitability vary by species, cultivar, and region. Keep it away from people and animals that might eat it, because the plant can be harmful if ingested.
Choose a suitable lantana and planting site
Give lantana a warm site with full sun. North Carolina State Extension defines full sun as at least six hours of direct light a day. Lantana can grow in a range of soil textures, but the soil must drain well; persistently wet conditions are a poor fit. UF/IFAS notes that it grows in Florida sandy loam, but local soil and climate still matter.
Check the plant label for species or cultivar, mature size, and growth habit. Lantana can suit borders, ground cover, containers, and hanging baskets, but spreading types need room and should not be planted where they can escape into natural areas or grazing land. In Florida, common lantana is considered invasive. Consult your local invasive-plant guidance before choosing a plant elsewhere, too.
Water and fertilize without overdoing it
Water regularly while a plant is establishing and whenever the soil dries out substantially. Established lantana tolerates some drought, but moderate watering can support growth and flowering. Container plants generally need closer attention than plants in the ground because their potting mix can dry sooner.

Avoid keeping the soil waterlogged. Excess water and excess fertilizer can reduce flowering, according to UC IPM. If feeding is needed, use a light application and follow the product label. UF/IFAS recommends light applications and slow- or controlled-release fertilizer in Florida, where reducing runoff is also a consideration; do not treat that regional advice as a universal feeding schedule.
Prune to manage size and seasonal growth
Remove dead wood and trim to shape or contain a plant that has become large or leggy. During active growth, avoid severe pruning unless local guidance or the plant’s condition calls for it. Use clean pruning shears and dispose of cut material securely, especially where children, pets, or livestock could reach it.

UF/IFAS describes cutting lantana back almost to the ground at the end of the growing season in Florida. That is a regional practice, not a universal calendar rule: the right timing and severity depend on frost, cultivar, and whether the plant is expected to regrow.
Plan for winter in your climate
Lantana can be grown as an annual or perennial, depending on the cultivar and local winter conditions. Frost may cause dieback; some plants regrow where winters are mild, while a hard freeze can kill them. Check local extension advice and the cultivar’s cold tolerance rather than relying on a single hardiness promise.

In colder areas, gardeners often treat lantana as an annual. A container can be moved to a protected, frost-free place, but overwintering it indoors may bring whiteflies or spider mites; powdery mildew is also possible under glass. Monitor plants rather than assuming these pests or diseases will occur outdoors.
Grow lantana in containers or propagate it
Use a pot or hanging basket with drainage holes and well-drained growing medium. Containers help manage placement and make it easier to shelter a plant from frost, but they do not make lantana non-toxic or guarantee that fruit will not spread. Keep pots away from places where children, pets, or grazing animals might reach the plant.
Rank #4
- USDA Zones 8 to 11
- Blooming Season: Spring to fall
- Soil and Water: Prefers well-draining soil. Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry
- Light: Full sun
- Ideal temperatures are between 65 degrees Fahrenheit and 95 degrees Fahrenheit
Propagation options listed by the Royal Horticultural Society include seed and semi-hardwood cuttings. North Carolina State Extension also lists stem cuttings and division. Choose a method suited to the plant and local guidance; do not assume seed-grown plants will retain a selected cultivar’s traits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check invasive status and select cultivars carefully
In Florida, common lantana is invasive, and birds can spread its fruit. UF/IFAS recommends native alternatives for replacing established landscaping or sterile cultivars from reputable sources in relevant Florida contexts. It lists Bloomify Red, Bloomify Rose, and Luscious Royale Red Zone as sterile options in its Florida guide. Those names do not establish that a cultivar is available or suitable in another region; check local assessments and confirm the plant’s identity with a knowledgeable nursery.

When comparing plants, consider local invasive status, whether the cultivar produces seed, winter tolerance, mature size, and growth habit—not just flower color. A sterile cultivar may reduce seed-spread risk, but it is not a substitute for checking regional recommendations or keeping plant material contained.
Handle lantana with care
Do not eat any part of lantana. Ingestion can be harmful, and unripe green berries are a particular concern. Leaves may irritate skin, and lantana can seriously harm livestock if eaten. Wear gloves and other suitable protection when handling it, and keep fallen berries, prunings, and other plant material away from children, pets, and grazing animals. Gloves do not make the plant safe to eat or eliminate ingestion risks.
Quick Recap
Common problems to watch for
- Few flowers: Check that the plant receives full sun. Avoid excess water and heavy feeding, both of which can reduce bloom.
- Wilting or poor growth in a pot: Check the soil moisture and drainage, and remember that containers may need more frequent watering than established in-ground plants.
- Whiteflies or spider mites: These are more likely to be a concern under glass or when plants are overwintered indoors. Inspect the plant and seek regionally appropriate pest advice if you find them.
- Frost damage: Dieback may be temporary in a mild climate, but a severe freeze can kill the plant. Wait for local conditions and evidence of regrowth before deciding how much to cut back.
