When did the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree tradition begin?
Construction workers at Rockefeller Center pooled their money for a 20-foot balsam fir in December 1931. They decorated it with homemade garlands and raised it on Christmas Eve. Rockefeller Center made the display an annual tradition in 1933. The Center describes the original tree as a symbol of hope and optimism during the Great Depression.

How many lights are on the tree?
The Center’s lighting FAQ says the 2025 tree had more than 50,000 multicolored LED lights strung on five miles (8 km) of wire. The 2026 count has not been announced. For historical context, Rockefeller Center’s history page lists 700 lights on the tree at the first official lighting ceremony; it does not give a year for that fact.
What is the star on top of the tree?
The current Swarovski star was designed by architect Daniel Libeskind and debuted in 2018, according to Rockefeller Center’s history. The Center describes it as 9 feet 4 inches tall, with three million crystals across 70 triangular spikes; its lighting FAQ gives its weight as about 900 pounds. These are the Center’s published specifications for the star, not independent measurements.

What happens to the tree after Christmas?
Rockefeller Center says the 2026 tree will be donated to Habitat for Humanity, milled and treated into lumber for home building. The lumber donation continues a long-running reuse tradition. The Center’s historical account identifies 1971 as the first year the tree was mulched and recycled, an earlier form of giving the tree another use after the holidays.
Was the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree ever left unlit?
Yes. Rockefeller Center’s historical feature says the tree remained unlit from 1942 through the end of World War II because of blackout regulations. The account describes the wartime change without establishing further details about how the restrictions were implemented.

Rockefeller Center says its “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” broadcast airs live annually on NBC. The 2026 ceremony is scheduled for December 2, but the Center had not published a precise broadcast schedule as of October 3, 2026. Check the Center’s tree page for updates.
