There are many ways to make a headboard, but no single plan fits every bed or every weekend. Choose a design first, measure your bed, then match the materials, tools and finishing time to the project. The ideas below span framed wood, pallet planks, upholstered panels and decorative treatments; the cited plans offer practical examples, not verified build instructions for all 62 concepts.
How to choose a DIY headboard project
Start with the look you want, then check whether the construction suits your tools and experience. A simple panel or fabric treatment may require less woodworking than a framed design with moulding; a pallet build adds dismantling, sanding and finishing. Shelves or lighting can make a headboard more useful, but they also add design and assembly decisions.
- Material and style: Decide whether you want painted or natural wood, reclaimed pallet boards, upholstery, or a decorative approach such as caning or vintage fabric.
- Fit: Measure the bed and settle on the headboard’s width and height before buying materials or cutting anything.
- Tools and skill: Check the plan’s tool list against what you own and can use safely. A store may be able to cut lumber for you.
- Finishing: Account for sanding, paint or other finish, and any time needed for glue or finish to dry before installation.
- Extras: Consider whether a shelf or lighting is worth the additional work.
The available examples do not provide a uniform cost or time comparison across all 62 ideas. Use each project’s own instructions to estimate materials and schedule rather than assuming every design is a weekend build.
Measure for your bed before cutting
Measure the bed frame or mattress width and decide how much, if any, you want the headboard to extend beyond it. Measure the intended height as well, taking account of the bed, pillows and the wall or mounting arrangement. Then confirm the chosen plan’s dimensions before cutting.

Published examples illustrate why dimensions are project-specific: HGTV’s upholstered-headboard guide gives a queen example of 64 × 40 inches, while Sikana’s pallet example describes a headboard 1.6 metres wide. These are dimensions for those plans, not universal sizing rules. Real Homes likewise recommends measuring bed width to determine a wood base’s width.
Three construction routes to consider
| Build route | Materials and preparation | Tools and effort | Example dimensions or time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Framed wood | Lumber, a 4 × 8 sheet of 1/4-inch sanded composite plywood, moulding, screws, wall anchors, paint, filler and caulk in The Home Depot’s plan. | That plan calls for measuring tools, a miter saw, table or track saw, brad nailer, drill or impact driver, sander and sandpaper, level and stud finder. It is labeled intermediate. | The Home Depot estimates 2–4 hours for its specific project. Its example panel is cut to 18 × 60 inches; use its full plan for its frame measurements. |
| Pallet wood | Reclaimed pallet planks, cross supports and a diagonal brace. Sikana’s example involves dismantling or preparing boards, cutting, sanding, cleaning and drying. | Sikana lists a tape measure, ruler, pencil, saw, sander, sandpaper, sponge and screw gun, along with wood screws. | Sikana describes a 1.6-metre-wide headboard made with about 20 planks cut to around 1.20 metres. Those measurements belong to its example. |
| Upholstered panel | HGTV’s plan uses 1/2-inch plywood, 2×2 and 2×6 boards, screws, glue, clamps, cotton, upholstery fabric and 1 1/2- or 2-inch foam batting. | The listed tools include a drill and staple gun with staples. The project adds fabric and padding work to the panel’s construction. | HGTV gives examples of 64 × 40 inches for queen, 80 × 40 inches for king and 42 × 40 inches for twin. Confirm fit for your own bed. |
These are examples from separate guides, not a controlled comparison. The Home Depot’s 2–4-hour estimate applies only to its intermediate wooden project; the other guides do not establish a comparable build-time estimate here.

What materials and tools you may need
Let the selected plan determine the shopping list. Do not buy every item from a more involved project if you are making a simpler panel, and check whether lumber can be cut by a home-improvement store before buying a saw solely for this build.
For a framed wooden headboard
The Home Depot’s intermediate plan lists lumber, 1/4-inch sanded composite plywood, moulding, screws, wall anchors, paint, filler and caulk. Its tool list includes saws, a brad nailer, drill or impact driver, sander, measuring tools, level and stud finder. Follow its complete cut list and instructions rather than treating its sample panel size as standard.

For a pallet headboard
Sikana’s example uses four pallets, three wooden strips and wood screws, plus a tape measure, ruler, pencil, saw, sander, sandpaper, sponge and screw gun. Its process includes preparing and sanding roughly 20 planks, cleaning and drying them, then attaching cross strips and a diagonal brace. Pallet dimensions and condition vary, so inspect the boards and check the chosen design’s measurements before relying on a count.
Extra Space Storage’s guide, updated September 10, 2026, also covers selecting and preparing pallets, dismantling and sanding planks, applying finish, building a framed support and attaching the planks. It discusses optional shelf or lighting features and provides approximate pallet counts by bed size; those counts should be checked against the actual pallet dimensions and design.

For an upholstered headboard
HGTV’s beginner guide lists plywood, 2×2 and 2×6 boards, screws, glue, clamps, cotton, upholstery fabric, foam batting, a drill, staple gun and staples. Fabric and batting requirements depend on the panel dimensions and how the design is wrapped, so use the chosen instructions to determine quantities.

Plan a pallet build carefully
Pallet projects can give wood a reclaimed look, but they involve more than attaching loose boards to a wall. Sikana’s example calls for roughly 20 planks cut to about 1.20 metres, two cross strips and a diagonal brace for its 1.6-metre-wide design. Its sequence includes sanding, cleaning and drying the planks before assembly. Extra Space Storage’s guide adds selecting suitable pallets, applying finish and building a framed support, with shelf or lighting as optional features.
Because pallet sizes and board condition differ, inspect the material and use the measurements and pallet-count guidance for the specific design you choose. Allow for preparation and finish-drying time when deciding whether the project fits your available weekend.
Explore styles beyond wood and upholstery
A headboard does not have to be a basic timber frame or padded panel. Real Homes’ roundup presents 26 DIY approaches, including caning and vintage embroidery or tapestry. Those options expand the design possibilities, but the appropriate base, fastening method and dimensions still depend on the particular idea.
The headline’s 62 ideas should be treated as a range of inspiration, not as 62 individually verified construction plans. Use an idea as a starting point, then confirm its measurements, materials, mounting method and finishing needs before beginning.
