Start with fallen leaves, branches, pinecones, seasonal produce and items you already own—then add inexpensive craft materials only where they help. These 39 ideas are designed to mix and match; not every project is free, and costs depend on what you have and what you need to buy.
How to decorate for Thanksgiving on a budget
Look around your home and yard before shopping. A vase, jar, tray, candle, scrap of ribbon or table linen can become part of the display. Fallen leaves, branches, pinecones and greenery provide seasonal texture, while apples, citrus, squash and pomegranates can serve as edible décor. If a project needs a supply you do not have, consider a household substitute: use ribbon for twine, or a grapevine base instead of a wire hanger.
The ideas below are grouped by where they go. Many rely on found or reused materials; paper, paint, floral stems and other craft supplies may add a cost. Food Network has described five centerpiece ideas as costing under $15 each, but that article’s example prices are not current price quotes or a guarantee for every shopper.
What can you make for the entry or front door?
- Branch arrangement. Gather a few branches, trim them to different heights and place them in a vase you already own. Add a few acorns or pinecones around the base for texture.
- Simple foliage wreath. Weave stems, dried grasses or eucalyptus clippings into a grapevine base or a wire hanger shaped into a ring. Add berries or seed pods if you have them, then hang it on the door.
- Pinecone-and-greenery bowl. Cluster pinecones, leaves and seasonal greenery in a shallow bowl or tray near the entry. This is easy to move when you need the surface for keys or serving dishes.
- Produce welcome display. Arrange apples, citrus, squash or pomegranates on a board or platter with a few foraged leaves. Use produce you already have rather than buying decorative fruit specifically for the display.
- Jar of seasonal stems. Put flowers, grasses or herbs in an empty jar or bottle. Tie on a scrap of ribbon or twine if available, or leave the glass plain for a simpler look.
- Teacup posy. Use a teacup as a small vase for a few flowers or herb stems. Group it with other household objects on a hall table rather than buying a dedicated container.
- Layered entry table. Fold a throw or scarf in an autumn-friendly color, such as terracotta or soft green, and use it beneath a tray or bowl. This brings in seasonal color without a new table covering.
- Acorn-and-leaf tray. Arrange gathered acorns and leaves on a tray you already own. Keep the tray near the door or on a side table so the loose natural materials stay contained.
- Small branch-and-pinecone grouping. Place one short branch in a bottle or jar and set pinecones beside it. A compact grouping works where a full wreath or large arrangement would be awkward.
What are low-cost Thanksgiving table decorations?
- Low pinecone centerpiece. Fill a shallow bowl with pinecones, leaves and greenery. Keep the arrangement low if guests need to see across the table.
- Fruit-and-foliage centerpiece. Spread apples, pomegranates, squash or citrus across a board, then tuck in leaves. The fruit can be returned to the kitchen after dinner.
- Walnuts and berries in a vase. Food Network presents walnuts and berries as a centerpiece combination. Layer them in a clear vase or glass vessel you have at home; treat the ingredients as décor and keep them separate from food served to guests.
- Corn-kernel candle holders. Food Network describes using corn kernels in Mason jars or tealight holders. Place the kernels in the container and set a tealight in its own suitable holder; do not let a flame touch loose kernels or nearby foliage.
- Leaf-wrapped hurricane vase. Food Network’s example uses leaves secured around a hurricane vase. Arrange leaves on the outside of the glass, keeping them clear of the flame and any hot surfaces.
- Branch-and-pinecone centerpiece. Use branches and pinecones in a low tray or bowl. Trim or select branches so they do not obstruct conversation or extend into serving space.
- Thankful tree centerpiece. Stand yard branches in a tall container and invite guests to write what they are thankful for on paper leaves. Tie the notes on with twine or ribbon; place the container where it will not crowd the dishes.
- Candle cluster on a tray. Group candles of different heights on a tray or shallow dish, then surround them with natural elements. Keep leaves, greenery and paper well away from flames, and never leave burning candles unattended.
- Jar votives. Repurpose empty jars as votive holders, using candles suited to the holder. Keep the display stable and clear of paper, dried foliage and anything that could catch fire.
- Wrapped-candle centerpiece. Hallmark describes a centerpiece using hurricane lamps or clear vases, ivory candles, burlap and cardstock templates. Follow the template’s placement carefully and keep combustible materials away from the candle flame.
- Seasonal glassware display. Arrange spare glasses or jars on a tray with a few leaves or small branches. This creates a grouped centerpiece from items already in the cupboard.
- Herb-and-jar table accents. Divide herbs among several small jars or teacups and place them along the table. The containers can be reused afterward, and the arrangement takes up less room than a single large centerpiece.
- Produce in a shallow serving bowl. Turn a bowl into a simple fruit display with apples or citrus and a few leaves. Move it off the table when it is time to serve.
- Paper-leaf place setting. Cut leaves from fall-colored cardstock, write each guest’s name and set one beside their plate. Use paper already on hand if its color works.
- Mini-pumpkin name tag. Write a guest’s name on a cardstock leaf and tie it to a mini pumpkin with twine or ribbon. Hallmark also suggests apples or pears as alternatives to mini pumpkins.
- Fruit place-card holders. Use an apple or pear as the anchor for a name card tied on with ribbon or twine. This is a produce-based alternative when you do not have small pumpkins.
- Leaf napkin tuck. Write a name on a small leaf or sprig with a white paint pen or metallic marker, then tuck it into the napkin fold.
- Quilled place card. Add a small quilled paper motif to a simple place card. Hallmark describes quilling as an inexpensive way to give cards a raised, three-dimensional detail; use leftover paper where possible.
- One shared note bowl. Put paper leaves and a pen in a bowl near the table and invite guests to add a thankful note. This adapts the thankful-tree activity for a table without room for branches.
How can you decorate a mantel, window or stair rail?
- Pressed-leaf twine garland. Press fallen leaves under a heavy book, then thread them onto twine and drape the garland across a mantel, staircase or window. Ribbon can replace twine.
- Painted coffee-filter leaves. Paint coffee filters with watercolor, use a leaf template to cut shapes, then string the finished leaves into a garland. Hallmark offers templates for this kind of paper craft.
- Branch display on the mantel. Lay or stand a few trimmed branches in a stable vessel, then add pinecones nearby. Keep the display away from candles or other heat sources.
- Seasonal jar cluster. Arrange jars or bottles of different sizes together on a mantel or sill, with a few flowers, grasses or herbs in them. Reusing mixed containers makes the grouping feel collected rather than matched.
- Greenery-and-leaf drape. Drape gathered greenery or fallen leaves along a mantel or window ledge. Secure the arrangement so it cannot fall, and keep it away from open flames.
- Paper-leaf window strand. Cut leaves from paper or painted coffee filters, thread them onto string and hang the strand in a window. Use ribbon if you already have it.
- Thankful-tree branch display. Place branches in a tall container on a sideboard or mantel and add paper leaves with guests’ notes. Hallmark provides downloadable leaf templates for its version of the activity.
- Foliage wreath above a buffet. Make a wreath with stems, dried grasses or eucalyptus clippings on a grapevine base or wire hanger, then hang it above a buffet instead of the front door.
Which projects suit a tight budget or a small table?
Choose projects according to what you already own and how much room you have. A large arrangement may be striking, but small jars, place cards and a short garland can create a seasonal effect with less table space. No consistent labor-time or current project-cost figures are established for these ideas, so use the comparison as a materials and placement guide rather than a price list.

How to put the decorations together without overspending
- Shop your home first. Gather trays, jars, vases, candles, linens, ribbon and usable paper before making a supply list.
- Collect natural materials responsibly. Use fallen leaves, branches and pinecones available to you, and avoid taking materials where gathering is not permitted.
- Choose one focal point. Select a wreath, centerpiece or thankful tree, then add small accents such as place cards or a short garland instead of filling every surface.
- Buy only the missing craft supplies. If you need string, check for spare ribbon or household twine first. If you need a wreath form, consider whether a suitable wire hanger or existing grapevine base will work.
- Keep fire and food in mind. Separate candles from dried leaves, paper and fabric. Keep decorative materials out of food and serving areas, and use stable containers for branches and candles.
