The ideas below translate those signals into 14 practical decor directions, from a floral pillow cover to more involved changes such as color drenching. What the 2026 trend numbers actually say
1stDibs’ 2025 report surveyed 468 designers in its Trade 1st Program through online interviews conducted in July and August 2025. The percentages below describe those respondents’ answers, not all homeowners or design professionals. The survey was conducted by Surveys & Forecasts, LLC. Read the 1stDibs 2026 trend report.
Within that sample, maximalism was cited by 39% and eclecticism by 38%. Chocolate brown was selected as a leading color by 33%; burgundy rose from 7% for 2025 to 21% for 2026. Floral and botanical motifs led pattern preferences at 22%, ahead of geometric patterns at 10% and stripes at 9%. Curved or irregular furniture was cited by 43%, wicker or rattan furniture by 27%, skirted seating by 24%, and irregular rugs by 21%.
The report also points to larger-surface ideas: color drenching was cited by 35% as a surging trend, 30% noted upholstered walls, and wallpapered ceilings were expected to grow by 35%. These figures are useful signals, not instructions to renovate every room.

1. Maximalism with intention

2. Eclectic, collected rooms
Mix old and new finishes, shapes, and objects so the room feels assembled over time rather than bought as a matching set. Eclecticism was cited by 38% of surveyed designers. A simple way to start is to pair one older-looking accent with furnishings you already own.
3. Chocolate brown and warm earth tones
Test deep brown on a small surface—a pillow, vase, lamp base, or tray—before committing to paint or a large piece of furniture. Chocolate brown was selected by 33% as a leading color for 2026 in the survey. It can sit alongside cream, wood, and other warm neutrals, but check the shade in your room’s lighting.

4. Burgundy and moody reds

Try flowers or leaves on a pillow cover, tea towel, or another small textile before choosing a larger patterned surface. Floral and botanical motifs led the surveyed pattern preferences at 22%. Be clear about the difference: a new item with an aged look is not an antique. In the 1stDibs survey, vintage and antique pieces made up an average of 36% of items sourced per project in 2025, and 85% of surveyed designers who sourced vintage bought pieces dating from 1920 to 2000.

7. Curved silhouettes
Bring in a rounded lamp, tray, or small occasional table if you want a softer outline without replacing major furniture. Curved or irregular-shaped furniture was cited by 43% of respondents. Check the item’s measurements and how it will sit alongside the straight lines already in the room.
8. Wicker and rattan texture
A woven basket or lampshade can add texture in a compact, useful way. Wicker and rattan furniture was cited by 27% in the survey; a small accessory lets you try the material before investing in a larger piece. Consider where dust may collect and whether the weave suits the room’s cleaning needs.

9. Skirted furniture and soft edges
Skirts soften the outline of seating or a table and can make a room feel less formal. Skirted seating was cited by 24% of survey respondents. To explore the look with less commitment, begin with a soft throw or fabric accessory rather than reupholstering furniture.

Painting walls and trim in the same color creates a more enveloping effect than painting one wall alone. Color drenching was cited by 35% as a surging trend. Because paint changes a substantial area and takes effort to reverse, test the shade on the actual wall and consider the room’s light before proceeding.
12. Wallpapered ceilings
A patterned ceiling can make a room feel more distinctive, but it is a significant surface to cover and not automatically renter-friendly. Wallpapered ceilings were expected to grow by 35% in the 1stDibs report. Try a sample or a smaller surface first, and check installation and removal requirements before buying materials.

Textured finishes add depth, while upholstered walls bring in softness. Start with the room and the amount of change you are willing to take on. A pillow cover, basket, or small decorative object affects little surface area and is easier to swap than paint, ceiling wallpaper, custom upholstery, or a dimensional wall treatment.
- Check your palette: choose an accent color or material that has a relationship to something already in the room.
- Consider permanence: removable textiles and objects are lower-commitment tests; wall and ceiling work takes more time and may require professional installation.
