A closing shift is a short, flexible end-of-day reset: choose a few household tasks that will make tomorrow easier, then stop. In Apartment Therapy’s one-week account, writer Quincy Bulin found that waking to a tidier home helped her maintain it during the day—but doing the routine nightly also became tiring. Her experience is one person’s account, not a controlled test or a promise of results for every household.
What is a closing shift cleaning routine?
The idea is to “close” your home for the night as you might close a workplace: put things back in order and prepare for the next day. Apartment Therapy credits TikTok creator Clara Peirce with coining the home-cleaning use of “closing shift.” Peirce described closing up her apartment like she would at work, with the goal ranging from cleaning the whole apartment to making it just “ten percent better for the morning.” The point is the reset, not a universal checklist or a requirement to clean every room.
In Apartment Therapy’s September 10, 2023 coverage, Peirce’s video had received over 3.8 million views and the hashtag #closingshiftcleaning over 71.3 million views. Those are historical platform reach figures, not evidence that the routine works.
What happened in the one-week trial?
Quincy Bulin began her weeklong challenge on a weekend when she was hosting her daughter’s friends. She chose the kitchen, living room, and playroom because those were the rooms her family used most. Her plan included tidying the rooms, gathering dishes and loading the dishwasher, clearing and wiping surfaces, locking doors and turning off lights, and finding anything needed in the morning.

What worked for her
Early in the week, Bulin found the kitchen reset manageable and liked knowing she would wake to dishes ready to use. Waking to a cleaner home also motivated her to keep it tidier during the day. By Sunday, she had noticed herself adopting a “don’t put it down, put it away” mindset.
What made it difficult
The routine was not effortless. Bulin skipped a night when she was ill and unmotivated; she said earlier maintenance meant the house was still less messy than usual. Going from two rooms to three felt like a mental hurdle. After working especially late, she appreciated having a fairly clean home but did not want to be the person cleaning it. By the end of the week she was glad the challenge was over because doing it every night felt burdensome. She suggested involving her daughter in cleaning up her own mess and choosing a better time for the routine.

Her account shows both sides of the trade-off: a useful reset and tidier baseline, alongside fatigue, a missed night, and pressure from treating the routine as a daily rule. It does not establish that other households will have the same experience.
How should you adapt the routine?
Start with the mess or morning snag that bothers you most, rather than trying to reset the whole home. The Washington Post’s 2025 coverage describes kitchen closing shifts lasting five to 20 minutes depending on the routine and the day; this is practical guidance, not a guaranteed duration or study result.

A small starter reset
- Choose one room or pain point. For example, focus on the counter that gets crowded before breakfast.
- Clear and wipe one surface. Put away what belongs elsewhere, then wipe the surface with an ordinary household cloth.
- Handle the dishes that block tomorrow’s first use of the kitchen. Load the dishwasher or wash only what you need, according to your setup.
- Put away a few stray items. Stop when your chosen timer ends; add tasks later only if the routine remains manageable.
This starter sequence synthesizes the cited practical guidance; it is not a tested protocol. Cleaning professionals quoted by The Washington Post offer two useful reminders: Becky Rapinchuk, the Chicago-area cleaning professional behind Clean Mama, says, “Do it for your tomorrow self.” Real Simple editor in chief Lauren Iannotti says, “It should make you feel a nice brief moment of ‘Ahhh, now I’m in a good condition to start my day,’” If the routine feels like another unfinished job, scale it back.
Which version fits your household?
There is no established single best scope, schedule, or division of labor. Choose the version that solves a real morning problem without turning the reset into an exhausting obligation.

Does a nightly closing shift have to happen every night?
No. The sources describe a flexible maintenance reset, not a rule that every task must be done nightly. Bulin’s experience included a skipped night and a tiring sense of obligation by the end of the week. Martha Stewart’s April 10, 2026 explainer likewise frames the method as maintenance rather than deep cleaning and suggests shortening it on exhausting nights. A smaller reset—or no reset when you need rest—is compatible with treating the method as a tool rather than a standard to meet.
What evidence is there that it works?
The cited coverage provides personal experience and practical suggestions, not an independent controlled study establishing the routine’s effectiveness. The one-week results belong to Bulin; expert guidance about timers, checklists, and possible reset lengths should not be read as measured proof of an outcome. The clearest reason to try a closing shift is practical: see whether a small task you choose makes your own next morning easier.
