For new cabinets, look for a cabinet line certified to KCMA A161.1 and ask the maker to identify its factory finish; for repainting sound cabinets, use a cabinet-rated waterborne urethane or alkyd enamel with compatible primer and allow it to cure fully. If you want an engineered, easy-care surface rather than paintable or stainable wood, compare high-pressure laminate (HPL) with lower-wear options such as TFL.
Durability depends on the whole system: face material, substrate and edges, preparation and adhesion, curing, exposure to moisture and heat, cleaning, and repeated impacts. No finish name or sheen guarantees the same performance across every cabinet maker and kitchen.
Choose by project
| Project | What to consider | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Buying new wood or MDF cabinets | Ask whether the exact cabinet line has the KCMA A161.1 Quality Certification Seal, and request the manufacturer’s written description of the factory finish and curing process. | Certification and a documented finish system are more informative than a general “durable finish” label, but no single topcoat name guarantees identical performance from every maker. |
| Repainting sound existing cabinets | Choose a cabinet-rated waterborne urethane or waterborne alkyd enamel with a compatible primer. Follow the product’s preparation, recoat, and cure instructions. | Ordinary wall paint is not a substitute for a cabinet coating system. Dry-to-touch does not mean fully cured. |
| Choosing an engineered cabinet face | Consider HPL for a high-traffic, easy-care surface; compare edges, core, heat exposure, and repairability. TFL may suit lower-wear vertical cabinet surfaces. | Laminate products vary and are not invulnerable to scratches, heat, or separation from the core. |
What the evidence says about factory finishes
The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) says its A161.1 certification evaluates cabinet construction, including structure, drawers, doors, and finish. Its finish testing is designed to accelerate the cumulative effects of normal kitchen conditions on pre-finished cabinets. When buying new cabinets, ask whether the exact line—not just the brand—has the certification, and review the manufacturer’s finish description and care guidance.
A documented example of a factory finish system is Wellborn’s use of catalyzed sealers followed by an oven-cured conversion-varnish topcoat. That is an example of a robust factory process, not evidence that every conversion-varnish cabinet performs alike or that it is better than every engineered surface in every kitchen.

Repainting existing cabinets
For repainting sound cabinets, use a cabinet-rated waterborne urethane or waterborne alkyd enamel rather than ordinary wall paint. Sherwin-Williams describes its urethane trim enamel as its most durable cabinet-refinishing choice; Benjamin Moore describes ADVANCE as a waterborne alkyd designed for cabinetry and repeated washing. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent proof that one brand is universally best.
Preparation and curing matter as much as the product choice. Benjamin Moore’s technical guidance calls for surfaces to be clean, dry, and free of grease, oil, wax, and other contaminants; glossy areas should be dulled, surfaces roughened as directed, and dust removed. Follow the selected product’s own primer and application instructions rather than mixing systems or guessing at recoat times.

- Wood Touch up Filler Color Mixing Tips: When mixing colors according to the color chart, start with a light-colored repair paste as the base, then gradually add dark-colored paste in small amounts multiple times. Observe color changes to match your desired color. (Note: The color chart is for reference only. Due to monitor and printing variations, the actual color may differ. The final color is subject to the effect after the wood paint filler dries.)
A coating can feel dry before it reaches full hardness and adhesion. Benjamin Moore notes that optimum hardness and final sheen may take up to 30 days depending on conditions. Use cabinets gently and avoid aggressive cleaning until the product’s stated cure guidance allows it.

HPL and TFL: engineered surface options
HPL and TFL are distinct laminate products, not interchangeable names for one uniform cabinet finish. Wilsonart positions HPL for high-traffic, higher-performance applications and describes TFL as a lower-cost option for lower-wear vertical cabinet surfaces. Consider HPL if you want a wipeable engineered face and do not need a repaintable or stainable wood finish.
Laminate still needs care. Formica says normal-use laminate resists scratching and impact, but abrasive materials can scratch it, and prolonged exposure at or above 140°F (60°C) can lead to separation from the core. Edges, seams, backing substrate, and installation quality also affect how a cabinet holds up.

Compare samples and documents before buying
- Ask whether the exact cabinet line has KCMA A161.1 certification.
- Request the written finish description and ask how the factory finish is cured, or identify the exact repaint coating and compatible primer.
- Inspect a physical sample door, including its edges, profile, finish consistency, and areas likely to receive frequent hand contact.
- Read the care guide and warranty; cleaning restrictions are part of the product’s real-world requirements.
- For repainting, identify the existing substrate and coating, then clean and prepare the surface and prime as directed. Observe the stated cure window.
- Keep the maker’s paperwork and a color-matched touch-up kit for localized cosmetic damage.
Care and minor repairs
Follow the cabinet maker’s written care guide if it differs from general advice. MasterBrand’s baseline guidance is to wipe spills and splatters promptly, then dry the surface. Start with a soft lint-free cloth; use warm water or a mild dishwashing-liquid solution for grime where the maker permits it, then wipe or rinse as directed and dry. Microfiber is suitable for laminate and high-gloss surfaces.
Avoid abrasive pads and powders, strong detergents, ammonia, bleach, solvents, petroleum-based products, and routine wax or polish buildup unless the maker specifically recommends them. Do not treat cabinet faces as waterproof: protect sink- and dishwasher-adjacent areas, and do not leave wet cloths draped over doors.
For a small scratch or nick, ask the cabinet maker for a color-matched cabinet touch-up kit. MasterBrand says a matched kit may include a pen for minor blemishes and tinted putty for deeper small scratches, gouges, or nicks. Results depend on the original maker, color, sheen, age, and finish, so a generic kit is not guaranteed to disappear. Touch-up products are not a fix for widespread peeling, water-swollen substrate, delaminating laminate, warped doors, or heat damage; consult a cabinet professional about those problems.

FAQ
Is conversion varnish always the best kitchen cabinet finish?
No. It is used in documented factory systems, but performance depends on the maker’s complete process and the cabinet construction. For new cabinets, ask about KCMA certification and the written finish system rather than assuming one topcoat is best in every case.
What paint should I use to repaint kitchen cabinets?
Choose a cabinet-rated waterborne urethane or waterborne alkyd enamel with a compatible primer. Prepare the surface and follow the manufacturer’s application and cure instructions; ordinary wall paint is not a like-for-like substitute.
Are HPL cabinets scratch-proof?
No. Formica says normal-use laminate resists scratching and impact, but abrasives can scratch it. Prolonged high heat can also lead to separation from the core.

Follow the coating maker’s cure guidance. A surface may feel dry before it reaches full hardness and adhesion; Benjamin Moore notes optimum hardness and final sheen can take up to 30 days depending on conditions.
How should I clean kitchen cabinet finishes?
Use the cabinet maker’s care guide. A general baseline is to wipe spills promptly, use a soft cloth, and use warm water or mild dishwashing liquid for grime where permitted, then dry the surface. Avoid abrasive and harsh cleaners unless the maker explicitly allows them.
Can I repair a small chip in a cabinet finish?
For localized cosmetic damage, ask the cabinet maker for a color-matched touch-up kit. It may help with small blemishes, but it will not resolve peeling, swelling, laminate separation, or other broader failures.
