Choosing the Right Roof Pitch for Heavy Snow: A Builder’s Guide

No single roof pitch is right for every heavy-snow location. Learn how local code, structural design, roof geometry, drifting, and sliding snow shape the decision.

There is no single roof pitch that is safe or best for every heavy-snow location. Pitch affects whether snow stays on a roof or sheds from it, but it does not replace structural design for the site, locally adopted code, roof assembly, geometry, and applicable snow-load cases. For a real project, have a qualified structural designer compare the proposed roof forms against those conditions.

Start with the local code and site hazard

Ask the local building department which code and referenced edition of ASCE/SEI 7 apply to the project, including any local amendments. ASCE identifies 7-22 as its current standard and says it is adopted by reference into major U.S. model codes, but that does not establish which edition governs at a particular address. ASCE’s overview of ASCE/SEI 7 describes its scope and edition changes. [c001]

ASCE’s Hazard Tool provides design parameters referenced in ASCE standards, including snow. Use its output as an input to the design process, not as a substitute for confirming local requirements with the authority having jurisdiction and the project structural engineer. [c003]

Why pitch alone cannot determine snow capacity

ASCE/SEI 7-22 Chapter 7 treats ground snow loads, flat and sloped roof snow loads, slope factors, and partial and unbalanced loads as distinct design topics. It also addresses drifting, sliding snow, rain-on-snow surcharge, and ponding instability. Those provisions do not establish a universal best pitch or a pitch threshold that guarantees structural safety. [c002]

A structural designer must establish the loads and load cases for the actual site, roof exposure and thermal conditions, framing, geometry, and nearby obstructions. Member sizes, connections, sheathing, materials, and applicable load combinations all matter. Do not assume that increasing pitch makes an inadequately designed roof safe.

Compare proposed roof forms for the actual project

There is no defensible universal comparison that makes a particular pitch range best for all snowy locations. Ask the designer to compare the candidate roof geometries using the relevant project conditions:

  • Locally required snow loads, adopted code, and applicable load cases.
  • Snow retention versus controlled shedding, including where shed snow could land.
  • Drift exposure at roof steps, parapets, nearby walls, and adjacent structures.
  • Structural spans, framing system, and connection design.
  • Roofing material and its installation limitations.
  • Drainage and ice concerns.
  • Exposure of entrances, walkways, equipment, and lower roofs to sliding snow.

ASCE/SEI 7-22 addresses sloped roof loads, drifts, sliding snow, and related cases separately. A designer should assess those cases for the actual candidate roof rather than rely on a generic pitch recommendation. [c002]

Roof geometry and surroundings matter

Roof steps, parapets, projections, nearby taller structures, and lower roofs can affect where snow drifts or collects. Areas below an upper roof can also be exposed to sliding snow. Review the full roof plan, including additions, valleys, and locations where snow might accumulate or fall onto people, equipment, or another roof. [c002]

Plan snow retention and shedding together

Allowing snow to shed can expose entrances, walkways, lower roofs, or equipment to falling snow. Retaining snow can change where it accumulates and what the roof must carry. Treat guards, retention systems, and controlled shedding as coordinated design choices based on the structural design and product specifications. The available research does not establish a universal device, layout, or spacing recommendation.

Questions to take to your building department and designer

  1. Which code and referenced ASCE 7 edition apply here, and what local amendments must be followed?
  2. What site-specific ground and roof snow loads and load cases must the structure accommodate?
  3. How do roof steps, nearby walls, parapets, or upper roofs affect drift or sliding-snow exposure?
  4. Where could shed snow land, and how will the design address those risks?
  5. How do the proposed roofing material, framing system, and drainage plan affect the design?

FAQ

What is the best roof pitch for heavy snow?

There is no single best pitch for all heavy-snow locations. The suitable design depends on local code requirements, site conditions, roof geometry and assembly, structural design, and whether snow is retained or shed.

Does a steeper roof keep snow from building up?

Pitch can affect snow retention and shedding, but a steeper roof does not guarantee that snow will not build up or that the structure is safe. Sliding snow can also create hazards for people, equipment, and lower roofs.

What roof pitch is required for snow load?

The available research does not establish a universal required pitch. Ask the local building department which requirements apply and have a structural designer evaluate the actual roof and site.

How do I calculate roof snow load for my location?

Start by confirming the adopted code and local amendments. ASCE’s Hazard Tool provides design parameters referenced in its standards, including snow, but the project’s roof loads and applicable cases should be established by the structural designer and confirmed with the local authority. [c003]
