Yes—for many DIYers and as a secondary tool platform, Hercules can be a good value, particularly in its newer brushless 20V range. Independent testing found a Hercules brushless impact driver competitive for its price, though it trailed premium models in that test. Results vary by model and generation: a failure reported in a test of an older brushed hammer drill is not evidence of the durability of today’s brushless tools.
What the independent tests show
Newer brushless impact driver
Pro Tool Reviews tested the Hercules HCB81 brushless impact driver against other models and characterized it as a strong value, while noting that it lagged premium competitors in the comparison. In one test, the HCB81 drove a 10-inch by 1/2-inch lag bolt for 30 seconds, leaving 2.75 inches protruding; it placed sixth in that test. Older brushed hammer drill
A separate Pro Tool Reviews test of the brushed HC92K1 hammer drill reported a mixed result: it was fast under some drilling loads but ranked lower for torque and concrete drilling time. The reviewer said the first unit’s clutch stripped during testing, replaced it under warranty, and raised a build-quality concern. The review lists a 90-day warranty for that model. What the current product claims do—and do not—tell you
Brushless compact hammer drill
Harbor Freight lists the Hercules 20V Brushless 1/2-inch Compact Hammer Drill/Driver as tool-only, with battery and charger sold separately. Its listing specifies a brushless motor, maximum torque of 1,200 in-lb, a two-speed transmission and 14 clutch settings. Harbor Freight also claims up to 110 holes per charge when drilling concrete with a 3/8-inch masonry bit and an 8 Ah battery. That hole count is a manufacturer claim tied to the stated setup, not an independent comparison or a guarantee for different materials, bits, batteries or technique. High-torque impact wrench
Harbor Freight’s current Hercules high-torque impact-wrench listing gives up to 1,200 ft-lb of breakaway torque and 700 ft-lb of fastening torque. These are manufacturer specifications; actual results depend on the fastener, battery and working conditions. Harbor Freight’s impact-wrench listing
Warranty and total cost matter
Harbor Freight’s February 16, 2023 announcement said its new 20V brushless impact driver, drill/driver and hammer drill accepted Hercules 20V batteries, were sold through Harbor Freight, and carried five-year limited tool warranties; it described the batteries as having three-year limited warranties. Harbor Freight’s current tool page specifies a five-year limited warranty for qualifying 20V brushless tools purchased on or after August 19, 2022. Check the terms for the exact model and purchase date rather than assuming the same coverage for every tool, battery or charger. Warranty wording is product-specific. For example, the manual for item 70094 says its five-year limited warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for the original purchaser, requires proof of purchase, and offers repair or replacement at Harbor Freight’s option. It excludes battery packs and chargers from that tool warranty and lists exclusions such as normal wear, misuse, accident, rental, modification, unauthorized repair and neglect. Check whether a listed price covers only the tool. The cited compact hammer drill is tool-only, so buyers who do not already own a compatible battery and charger need to account for those separately. Harbor Freight’s displayed prices can change; a price shown on a product page is not a durable measure of the platform’s overall value.

How to decide whether Hercules fits your work
- Match model and generation. Compare the specific tool you plan to buy. Do not use a test of an older brushed model as a stand-in for a newer brushless one.
- Compare like with like. For the same task, look at independent performance results where available, along with size, weight and the load you expect to put on the tool. The available tests do not establish a full-line comparison across Hercules and competing brands.
- Price the platform, not just the bare tool. Include a compatible battery and charger if you need them, and compare the resulting package with alternatives.
- Read the exact warranty. Confirm coverage for the tool, battery and charger separately, and keep proof of purchase where required.
- Interpret headline figures carefully. Treat torque and per-charge figures as model-specific specifications or claims; check the stated setup and distinguish manufacturer claims from independent test results.
For concrete drilling with the cited compact hammer drill, Harbor Freight’s stated hole-count setup uses a 3/8-inch masonry bit and an 8 Ah battery. Confirm shank compatibility and the bit’s suitability for your material and tool before buying.
