A “window sash set” can mean either replacement panels selected for a particular window or a complete retrofit kit that supplies upper and lower sashes plus related hardware. They are not automatically interchangeable: identify your window’s manufacturer, series, operation, and jamb-liner setup before choosing a product.
What a window sash set includes
A sash is the framed panel that holds the glass and moves within the window. In a double-hung window, the upper and lower sashes can move; in a single-hung window, typically only the lower sash moves. A replacement sash may be sold individually and matched to a specific window model. A complete sash kit may instead include both upper and lower panels and components such as jamb liners, balances, locks, seals, or installation hardware.
Because sellers use “sash set” and “replacement kit” differently, check the exact contents and compatibility conditions rather than relying on the product name.
Choose between a complete retrofit kit and a model-specific sash

When the manufacturer and series are known, start with that manufacturer’s parts and ordering resources. For the documented retrofit option, search for a double-hung window sash replacement kit only if your window meets its stated requirements. The available product descriptions do not establish which route is cheaper, faster, or easier overall.

Identify your window before ordering
- Find the manufacturer and series. Look for labels or markings on the window, then use the manufacturer’s parts or help resources. Andersen’s 400 Series help page notes that many sash sizes and option configurations are available and directs customers to contact Andersen if they need ordering help or cannot find an item. - Confirm the window type and operation. Note whether it is single- or double-hung and whether the sash tilts inward. Similar appearance alone does not establish kit compatibility.
- Inspect the jamb-liner arrangement. The Quiksash kit’s stated fit is for tilt-in wood windows with existing vinyl compression jamb liners. If you cannot identify your liner type or the product’s conditions do not match your window, ask the supplier or manufacturer before ordering.
- Decide which sash or components you need. Determine whether the upper sash, lower sash, or both need replacement, and whether a kit’s included liners and balances suit the existing opening.
- Follow the product-specific measuring and ordering directions. Andersen directs buyers to its series-specific resources; the sources do not establish a universal measurement formula. Provide the requested model and dimensions to the supplier rather than adapting a formula from another product.
When a damaged glass unit may mean replacing the sash
A glass problem does not by itself determine whether you need replacement glass, an insulated glass unit, or a complete sash. Simonton’s manufacturer guidance identifies moisture between panes or a stress crack along the glass edge as situations in which a replacement sash may be needed. Use the safety instructions for your exact window
Installation procedures and hazards vary by design. Andersen’s 100 Series guide lists safety glasses, protective gloves, a #2 Phillips screwdriver, and filament or duct tape among the supplies for that guide’s procedure. Read the instructions for the exact window and replacement product before starting; do not assume a kit includes components or tools that its listing does not name.
