Dovetail bits are router cutters shaped to cut the angled sides of dovetail joints. To choose one, match its angle, diameter and cutting length to the joint and jig, and its shank diameter to your router’s collet. Compatibility is specific to the bit and jig: a bit that fits the router is not automatically suitable for every dovetail jig.
What a dovetail router bit does
A dovetail router bit cuts the sloped surfaces that form a dovetail joint. Depending on the cutter and setup, these joints can be through dovetails, half-blind dovetails or sliding dovetails; Milwaukee lists all three as applications for its dovetail bits. WOOD Magazine also describes router bits as a way to incorporate dovetail joints into woodworking projects.
Which specifications matter when choosing a bit?
Cutting angle and diameter
The angle and diameter affect the cut geometry and must suit the joint layout and the jig’s instructions. Product listings show that angles vary: Lee Valley’s listed options span 7° to 14°, depending on the bit. That range describes products in the listing, not a universal standard or a recommendation that one angle suits every joint.
Shank diameter and cutting length
Check the shank diameter against the collet fitted to your router; a bit must be held by a matching collet. The Lee Valley listings include bits with 1/4-inch, 1/2-inch and 8 mm shanks, depending on the option. Also verify that the cutting length is suitable for the stock thickness and the jig’s setup requirements. The cited listings do not establish one cutting length that works for every application.

Construction and coatings
Construction varies by product. Milwaukee describes carbide-tipped bits, while Lee Valley describes tungsten-carbide inserts and a non-stick coating on its own range. Treat these as product-specific features rather than properties shared by all dovetail bits.
How to check a dovetail bit against a jig
- Identify the joint and setup. Confirm whether you are cutting through, half-blind or sliding dovetails and follow the jig maker’s requirements for that joint.
- Check the jig’s stated bit requirements. Compare the required angle, diameter and cutting length with the bit’s specifications. Do not infer compatibility from the phrase “dovetail bit” alone.
- Match the shank to the router collet. Confirm that the router has a collet sized for the bit’s shank; do not assume a shank will fit because the cutter profile is right.
- Verify the exact combination. Check the jig manufacturer’s compatibility information for the bit model or specifications. CMT says its 818C bits work with “some of the most popular dovetail jigs,” but this does not establish compatibility with every jig.

What the listings do—and do not—tell you
Product descriptions can help identify a bit’s stated dimensions, construction and intended applications. They do not, by themselves, establish how cleanly or strongly a joint will turn out, how durable a bit will be, or whether a particular setup is safe. Those outcomes depend on the specific tool, jig, material and use; the cited sources do not provide comparative testing for them.
