For sheet and plate iron and steel under the U.S. gauge table, 14 gauge is thicker than 16 gauge: 5/64 inch (0.078125 inch, or 1.984375 mm) versus 1/16 inch (0.0625 inch, or 1.5875 mm). That establishes a thickness difference, not a universal strength rating. The material, gauge system, grade, shape, supports and loading all matter when judging a finished part.
What the gauge numbers mean for sheet and plate steel
The U.S. statutory gauge table for sheet and plate iron and steel lists these nominal thicknesses:

Within that table, 14-gauge steel sheet is 0.015625 inch (0.396875 mm) thicker than 16-gauge sheet. The figures describe standard thicknesses; they are not results of a load test or a measure of how much a finished component can carry.
Does thicker mean stronger?
Thickness can affect a steel part’s resistance to bending, denting or buckling, but gauge by itself cannot establish its strength or capacity. A comparison also depends on the steel grade and construction, the part’s shape and dimensions, how it is supported, the direction and type of load, and the likely failure mode. The cited statutory table specifies dimensions; it does not compare the load capacity of 14- and 16-gauge products.

First identify the material and gauge system
“Gauge” is not one universal thickness scale for every material or product. The dimensions above apply to sheet and plate iron and steel in the U.S. statutory table; do not transfer them to aluminum, stainless steel, wire or another gauge convention without an applicable reference.
If you mean electrical wire
Wire gauge commonly refers to AWG, a different system from sheet-metal gauge. ASTM B258 covers standard AWG dimensions and areas for solid round electrical-conductor wires. Its scope does not make the steel-sheet dimensions above applicable to wire, nor does it establish a 14-versus-16 AWG strength comparison. ASTM B258-18R26

What to check before choosing material
- Confirm the material and the gauge convention used in the specification.
- Check the stated actual thickness and material grade or composition.
- Consider the part’s geometry, spans, supports, load direction and application.
- Use application-specific ratings or test data when you need to establish load capacity; gauge alone is not enough.
A thickness gauge can help check stock thickness against its stated specification, but a thickness measurement does not establish the material grade or a part’s load capacity.
