You can often handle a running toilet if the problem is a tangled chain, a float set too high, or a worn flapper that you can replace with a compatible part. First identify where the water is going: into the overflow tube, or from the tank into the bowl. If a simple adjustment or suitable replacement does not stop the running—or you cannot identify the fault—call a plumber.
Why does my toilet keep running?
Two different problems commonly cause a toilet to run between flushes. Water may pass from the tank into the bowl through a flapper or other tank seal that is not closing properly. Or the fill mechanism may continue adding water until it flows into the overflow tube. The distinction matters: the first points you toward the chain and seal; the second toward the float and fill valve. The EPA WaterSense home-maintenance guidance and its WaterSense at Work toilet guidance describe both leak paths.
How to check the tank safely
- Remove the tank lid carefully and set it on a stable surface. Watch the mechanism through a refill after flushing.
- Look for a chain that is tangled, too tight, or pulling the flapper out of position. Check whether the flapper or canister seal appears worn, obstructed, or coated with mineral buildup.
- Watch the water level as the tank refills. If water reaches and runs into the overflow tube, the float may be set too high or the fill valve may not be shutting off.
- Check that the refill tube is positioned as specified for your toilet model. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming every tank uses the same arrangement; Kohler’s running-toilet guide also identifies this as an inspection point.
Use a dye test to check for a tank-to-bowl leak
If the toilet seems to run or refill even when nobody has flushed, put a few drops of food coloring or a dye tablet in the tank. Wait 10 minutes without flushing, then look in the bowl. If colored water appears, water is leaking from the tank into the bowl. Flush after the test to clear the dye and avoid staining. The EPA recommends checking for silent toilet leaks with a dye test at least once a year.
Which repairs are reasonable to try yourself?

These steps follow the adjustment-then-replacement sequence in EPA WaterSense at Work. Do not replace a part simply because it is the most familiar possibility: a flapper leak and an overflow problem require different checks.

How to choose the right replacement part
Flappers are not universal. Check the toilet manual or the manufacturer’s site for the correct part; the EPA also recommends taking the old flapper or a photo of it when shopping. Match the part to the toilet’s design rather than relying on appearance alone. See the EPA’s Fix a Leak Week guidance for flapper matching advice. For a fill valve, confirm compatibility and follow the toilet and replacement-part maker’s instructions; the needed tools and exact steps can vary by installation.
The EPA recommends replacing toilet flappers at least every five years to help maintain a good seal and avoid leaks. Treat that as maintenance guidance, not a substitute for checking the part’s condition and the toilet manufacturer’s recommendations.

When should you call a plumber?
- The toilet still runs after you correct the chain or float, or after fitting a compatible replacement part.
- You cannot tell whether water is leaking into the bowl or flowing into the overflow tube.
- The fault or part fit is unclear, or the manufacturer’s instructions do not give you confidence in the repair.
- You are concerned about making the repair safely or would rather have a professional diagnose it.
The Portland Water Bureau advises homeowners to know their limitations and call a plumber if concerned about making a repair. EPA WaterSense likewise recommends contacting a local plumber for a persistent running toilet or another problem you cannot resolve.
