Snow mold is a cool-season lawn disease that can leave grass matted and discolored when snow melts. Long-lasting snow cover and wet, cool conditions favor it, but pink snow mold can also develop during cool, wet weather without snow. Most mature lawns recover as spring growth resumes; fall cleanup and a light spring rake can help reduce risk and aid recovery.
What is snow mold?
Snow mold is a name for turf diseases that become noticeable after winter weather, often as circular or irregular patches of matted, pale, grayish or pink-tinged grass. The two main forms discussed by extension services are gray snow mold, associated with Typhula species, and pink snow mold, also called Microdochium patch and associated with Microdochium nivale.
Both can appear after snow cover, and their symptoms can overlap. Pink snow mold is not limited to snowy lawns: it can develop in cool, wet weather even when snow is absent. For that reason, appearance alone may not be enough to identify the disease with certainty.
Conditions that favor it
Snow mold is more likely when turf stays cool and wet, snow cover lasts a long time, and grass enters winter long or matted. Leaves and thatch can hold moisture and restrict air movement. Illinois Extension reports an optimum infection range of 30–45°F for gray snow mold and 32–46°F, with a maximum around 55°F, for pink snow mold. Those figures describe the diseases, not a guarantee that symptoms will occur at those temperatures.

Pink snow mold is common where snow accumulates, and Penn State Extension notes that severity generally increases with deeper, longer-lasting snow cover. It may also become active again after snowmelt when cold, wet, overcast weather continues.
How to recognize likely snow mold
Look for patches of matted, discolored grass as snow melts or turf thaws. Gray snow mold may be most visible at that point; pink snow mold can also appear during prolonged cool, wet weather without snow. Pink patches are often rounder and smaller than gray snow mold patches, but that difference is only a clue, not a definitive diagnosis.

- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
- Gray snow mold: associated with Typhula species and favored by cool, wet conditions, snow over unfrozen soil, and tall, matted grass.
- Pink snow mold: also called Microdochium patch; it can occur under snow or in cool, wet weather without it.
Other lawn problems can also cause discoloration or thin patches. If symptoms are severe, recurring, or difficult to distinguish, consult a local extension service or turf professional rather than relying on a brief visual description.
How to lower the risk before winter
Keep mowing while the grass is growing
Continue mowing through fall until turf growth stops. The aim is to avoid sending excessively long grass into winter, where it can mat under snow or wet leaves. Do not mow when the lawn is too wet or conditions make mowing damaging.

Clear leaves and manage thatch
Remove fallen leaves so they do not form a damp cover over the turf. Reduce excess thatch where needed; accumulated plant material can hold moisture and make the grass less likely to dry.
Use local guidance for fall fertilizer
Avoid excessive nitrogen late in the season, but do not treat one calendar cutoff as universal. Illinois Extension advises against applying nitrogen within about six weeks of a killing frost or expected first snow for gray and pink snow mold management. UC IPM also cautions that high fall or winter nitrogen may increase susceptibility to Microdochium patch. Colorado guidance differs in its regional approach to fall fertilization, so follow local extension recommendations for timing and rate rather than applying a blanket rule.

Address site conditions if pink snow mold recurs
For established Microdochium problems, UC IPM also identifies good drainage and soil aeration, reduced shade, and avoiding excess irrigation as cultural measures that may discourage disease. Its regional guidance gives a soil pH range of 6.5–6.7; do not amend a lawn toward that range without a soil test and advice suited to your area.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when snow mold appears in spring
- Wait until the lawn is accessible. Once conditions allow, lightly rake matted grass to loosen crusted leaves and improve air movement and drying. A lawn dethatching rake can help with this light loosening; raking is not a cure for the pathogen.
- Allow healthy turf time to grow. Many mature lawns recover as temperatures rise and growth resumes. Surviving crowns or underground stems can produce new growth, even when leaves have been damaged.
- Repair areas that remain thin or bare. If the turf does not fill in, overseed or resod the damaged spots. Colorado State University Extension suggests core aeration followed by overseeding when a lawn is slow to recover.
- Fertilize only when growth is active and local guidance supports it. Colorado recommends light spring nitrogen particularly where no fertilizer was applied the preceding fall; Penn State notes that nitrogen can aid recovery in affected pink snow mold areas. Follow local turf guidance rather than using an unsupported rate or calendar date.
Should you use fungicide on snow mold?
Fungicide is not a universal treatment for a home lawn, and prevention before winter is different from trying to repair damage after snow melts. Colorado State University Extension says: “Spring fungicide applications will NOT effectively control or prevent the disease, nor will fungicide use hasten spring turf recovery.” Its guidance does not recommend fungicides for snow mold in home lawns.

Other extension guidance describes preventive treatment in narrower situations. Illinois Extension discusses preventive applications where gray or pink snow mold has a history, while Penn State describes preventive pink snow mold fungicides for high-value turf—such as putting greens, sports fields, and recently seeded lawns—before the first permanent snow cover. Penn State says post-melt treatment is usually unnecessary unless conditions still favor disease activity. These recommendations differ by region and turf use; for a typical home lawn, focus on cultural prevention and spring recovery. If severe disease repeatedly affects your lawn, or you are considering a pesticide, ask your local extension service and follow the current product label. Registration and directions vary by jurisdiction and can change.
